Avoid USAA at all costs even if you think you will save, you will not.
USAA is too costly, changes policy without consent, and is a nightmare to deal with on claims. Our last claim, they offered us a final offer of exactly half what our vehicle was worth. We had to hire an independent appraiser, they wouldn’t honor his appraisal, then we had to pay for a mediator to get even near what the vehicle was worth. Our own insurance company fought us at every turn for what our vehicle was obviously worth. The policy has gone up more than 4 times our initial quote. I don’t know why we stuck with them for so long. Quotes from other companies put our 6-month price less than 1 month of USAA’s prices. We are dumping them as soon as possible. It isn’t the same USAA it was 20 years ago. We have good credit and clean driving records. The last thing we want after being in an accident is to have to fight with our own provider that we were paying top dollar for. Our payout finally came after 1 year of dealing with them, hiring our own appraisal, and paying for mediation. My only advice is if you use USAA and get into an accident, immediately hire an attorney to deal with it all for you; otherwise, stay away from this company at all costs. They are not worth the high premiums they charge.

USAA consistently ranks well for customer service across multiple ratings sources. Insurify customers give it 4.9 out of 5 points for overall experience and 4.9 for customer service.

Pros
  • Competitive rates for Texas drivers

  • Strong customer service ratings

  • Numerous specialized discounts for eligible members

Cons
  • Only available to members of the military community

  • Many cheaper competitors in Texas

  • No 24/7 customer phone support

  • To identify the four best car insurance companies for Texas drivers, we evaluated 200-plus regional and national companies. We analyzed thousands of user reviews from verified Insurify customers to identify which companies provided the best overall experience, claims and customer satisfaction, and overall value. We assessed multiple data points to rate affordability, coverage options, available discounts, customer satisfaction, and financial strength.

How much is car insurance in Texas?

Car insurance in Texas averages $111 per month for liability-only policies and $207 for full coverage. Texans pay more for car insurance than the national averages. Nationally, minimum coverage averages $98 per month, and full coverage averages $187 monthly.

Texas car insurance rates are expensive for multiple reasons, including:

  • Inflation: As inflation pushes up the cost of parts and labor in Texas, claims costs go up, and insurers raise rates to keep pace.

  • Weather risks: Vehicles in Texas are at risk of damage from severe storms, flooding, high winds, and wildfire. Insurers base rates on how likely they are to have to pay costly weather claims in an area.

  • Risky drivers: Nearly 15% of Texas drivers don’t have insurance. About 3% have speeding tickets, and more than 4% have caused an accident, Insurify data shows.

  • Costlier vehicles: Texas had the second-highest volume of new-car sales in 2024 of any state.[1] And the two most popular vehicles in the state — the F-Series pickup and Chevrolet Silverado — are among the most expensive to insure. Insurance costs more for new, high-value vehicles because the cost to repair or replace them is higher.

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in Texas

Texas drivers can encounter a broad range of risks on the roads. Traffic congestion and vehicle theft rates can raise car insurance costs in large urban areas like Houston and Dallas. Galveston and Corpus Christi drivers must be mindful of potential storm and flood damage.

Personal factors, like age, gender, credit, and driving history, also affect Texas car insurance rates. And insurers each have their own formula for weighing these factors. Comparing car insurance quotes is the best way to ensure you find affordable insurance premiums.

To ensure you get the most accurate quotes:

  1. Use a comparison platform that’s licensed to sell insurance in Texas. This allows you to see multiple quotes without having to visit individual insurer websites or make multiple phone calls.

  2. Have your driver profile details ready. For example, you’ll need to share information like your age, gender, when you first got a license, your driving record, and more.

  3. Be prepared to share important vehicle information, including the VIN, mileage, year, make, model, safety features, and more.

  4. Get multiple quotes for the same coverage limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.

Texas car insurance requirements

Texas law requires drivers to have a minimum amount of liability insurance to legally drive in the state. If you cause an accident, liability coverage pays for the other driver’s injuries and property damage.

Insurers must include personal injury protection coverage (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in every policy they sell in Texas. If you don’t want these coverages, you must decline them in writing.[2]

Texas is an at-fault state, meaning claims go through the at-fault driver’s insurance policy. The following table shows the minimum car insurance requirements in Texas:

How to find the cheapest Texas car insurance

Maintaining a clean driving record and comparing multiple quotes are the best ways to get cheaper car insurance. Texas drivers can also take some steps to help lower auto insurance costs, including:

  • Drop full coverage. Nearly 65% of Texas drivers own their vehicles outright. That means they don’t have a lienholder requiring them to have full coverage. It may make sense for some drivers with older or lower-value vehicles to drop collision and comprehensive coverages to save money.

  • Improve your credit. Texas allows insurance companies to consider your credit when setting your car insurance rates. The average credit score in Texas is 692 (very good), according to Experian.[3] If your score is below average, improving your credit could help you get lower insurance rates.

  • Ask for discounts. Most insurance companies offer discounts as a way to further reduce your costs. For example, most Texas drivers have good driving records, free of tickets, accidents, and DUIs, Insurify data shows. Those drivers might qualify for safe driver discounts.

  • Consider flexible payment options. If you want to avoid a large down payment or big monthly premium, look into policies that offer flexible payment schedules. For example, pay-per-mile coverage charges a low monthly rate plus a low per-mile rate, so you pay only for the miles you actually drive. You can also check out Insurify Car, which provides Texas state-minimum coverage that you pay for in seven-day increments and can cancel at any time.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
