USAA penalizes you after an accident and finds a way to cancel your policy
USAA is no longer my insurance. Conveniently, after I filed a claim when someone hit my car while it was parked, my policy was canceled without my knowledge. It was originally set up on autopay, and I’m not sure how that got dropped. Even if it did get dropped after the claim was filed, shouldn’t I have been informed that I needed to set up autopay again? This also cost me a suspension, a $150 reinstatement fee, and higher insurance costs because of the suspension. My premium was raised from $227 to $497 per month, which I refuse to pay, so I switched to a different carrier. This is the worst experience I’ve ever had with an insurance company. I had this insurance for more than a year, and the damages to my car were minimal at best.

You're the Only One Who Cares About You - Your Safety, Your Money, and Your Bottom Line
Move out of or stay out of California; it's an insurance rip-off and joke. It doesn't matter if you have a pristine driving record (like me, 30+ years as a licensed driver, zero tickets, zero accidents, zero claims - still screwed!). As long as there are people encouraged to break the law, you're going to foot the bill. First and foremost, be a responsible driver, drive defensively, pay attention, and keep your head on a swivel. Understand that no one else out there cares about you, your life, your vehicle, or your money, so you have to do right by yourself and your family alone. My next best advice to help ensure you can have your own back, because not everyone can even qualify for USAA (but if you do qualify for USAA, bar none, there is no better insurer out there, period!), is to figure out how to self-insure. Pay the premiums to yourself, invest in a no-touch type of account to accumulate your premiums and get an actual return on that investment. Then, if the worst-case scenario happens and you need to handle business, guess what - you can pay for it yourself. Your claim won't be denied, and your rates won't go up if, God forbid, you get in an accident, nor will you be denied coverage. These days, you're going to foot the bill, one way or another, most likely for you and the other party involved, so you might as well be your own insurer and quit paying premiums to another company who will forget that you've been footing the bill for all these years with no claims the moment you actually need them.

Receptionist is sweet but your policy needs improvement
The lady I talked to was very knowledgeable, patient, and professional in every way. The only problem I have with all insurance companies is that I can’t drop comprehensive insurance without dropping collision. It seems like a tactic by insurance companies to take more money from people who don’t need comprehensive coverage. I’ve lived in my house for 20 years, and the chances of my car getting stolen are really slim. There are no trees close enough to fall on and destroy my car. I live in the city and seldom drive at night, so my chances of hitting a deer are very slim. My car is completely paid for and not financed, so why can’t I drop comprehensive coverage? I don’t need it and haven’t for a long time!

High Costs...little return
For the most part, the insurance has been fine. It is difficult at times if you need to speak with a customer service rep, as the company relies on AI to try and resolve issues. Claims are hit or miss, and it seems that not all representatives provide the same quality of service. Rates have consistently increased regardless of any claims against your own account. There are very few discounts for customers that have been with them for years. Rates are 4-5 times higher than other insurance companies.

Insurance shouldn't be for profit
Insurance is a racket. No car? Need a non-driver's policy, otherwise the gap in insurance is held against you and comes with obnoxiously high rates. Bad credit? For some reason, it's viewed as a high risk and means obnoxiously higher rates. Why the premium on a 14-year-old Audi was $180/month for full coverage for someone with no points is beyond me. If anything, the premium should have gone down due to continued depreciation (i.e., replacement cost goes down).

I can no longer trust anyone or anything from USAA. I called to lower my rate and it worked for a month. They told me when I renew my policy it would go down to $180 a month because a ticket would fall off my record. A month later, I got a policy renewal notice saying my policy would be $320 monthly, and I had no new incidents reported. I’m going to get new insurance before the policy renews with another company, a company I can trust.

If you have no claims, it's very good. But if you have one small claim, even with no tickets and your first small accident in 70+ years of driving, they still tripled my policy fees. I'm very angry with them.

USAA - Not What It Is Made Out to Be
I was a victim of a hit and run. Due to the location of the damage, it was not discovered at the time it happened. When I submitted a claim for the issue, I found myself being questioned multiple times, seemingly to try to find cause to refuse my claim and not pay out. Then, upon review of my auto and home coverage, I found several key items of coverage completely missing or with an outrageous deductible.

Lack of Purpose
Inflexible, non-thinking, non-service providing, borderline rude agents. There was a discrepancy in driving history due to identity theft. I collected and presented my actual clear, clean official notarized history from the DMV, advising them their info was in error. I was blown off. Always looking to be cost-efficient; however, customer-centric businesses are more deserving of anyone's time and patronage. Three other companies I've inquired about caught the error and were able to provide realistic, competitive quotes.

Don't Trust USAA!
Very poor experience. I had a car with 60,000 original miles, like it came out of a showroom, and it was totaled. They compared it to the same car with 238,000 miles, and no amount of talking and explaining would change their mind. I lost thousands of dollars! On top of that, because I was challenging them on the price they wanted to give me, they took the rental back or were going to charge me a higher price than I could rent it myself, although I pay extra on my policy for them to provide a rental to me in case my car gets disabled!

Disappointed
USAA has good prices on policies. When filing a claim a few years back, the only thing that stood out to me after the process was what the claim representative said: "We don’t legally have to do any more than that." It was a grey area that they would not even discuss.
