USAA is too costly, changes policy without consent, and is a nightmare to deal with on claims. Our last claim, they offered us a final offer of exactly half what our vehicle was worth. We had to hire an independent appraiser, they wouldn’t honor his appraisal, then we had to pay for a mediator to get even near what the vehicle was worth. Our own insurance company fought us at every turn for what our vehicle was obviously worth. The policy has gone up more than 4 times our initial quote. I don’t know why we stuck with them for so long. Quotes from other companies put our 6-month price less than 1 month of USAA’s prices. We are dumping them as soon as possible. It isn’t the same USAA it was 20 years ago. We have good credit and clean driving records. The last thing we want after being in an accident is to have to fight with our own provider that we were paying top dollar for. Our payout finally came after 1 year of dealing with them, hiring our own appraisal, and paying for mediation. My only advice is if you use USAA and get into an accident, immediately hire an attorney to deal with it all for you; otherwise, stay away from this company at all costs. They are not worth the high premiums they charge.

For the most part, the insurance has been fine. It is difficult at times if you need to speak with a customer service rep, as the company relies on AI to try and resolve issues. Claims are hit or miss, and it seems that not all representatives provide the same quality of service. Rates have consistently increased regardless of any claims against your own account. There are very few discounts for customers that have been with them for years. Rates are 4-5 times higher than other insurance companies.

Insurance is a racket. No car? Need a non-driver's policy, otherwise the gap in insurance is held against you and comes with obnoxiously high rates. Bad credit? For some reason, it's viewed as a high risk and means obnoxiously higher rates. Why the premium on a 14-year-old Audi was $180/month for full coverage for someone with no points is beyond me. If anything, the premium should have gone down due to continued depreciation (i.e., replacement cost goes down).

They keep raising their prices even though I hardly use my car due to my third cancer diagnosis. I paid full price in 2009, and my car now has 28,000 miles (which shows how little I use it). I pay for a parking space. They added rental insurance when I clearly said no thanks (over the phone and asked them to send it to me in writing). During the ongoing TOPA process, some of my belongings got damaged. I tried to place a claim over the phone, and an angry person told me it is not covered. Then why are they charging me for a service that does not cover anything? Lastly, my car was damaged while parking, and the DC 3rd Police Department told me that damages should be covered by any car insurance by DC law. I've tried over the phone without a response so far. I believe this is an abuse against older people who are just trying to survive on a very limited income. Waiting for a prompt response from corporate or a manager. The supervisor just said they would call me back, but it never happens. I’d appreciate anyone's help!

On top of that, because I was challenging them on the price they wanted to give me, they took the rental back or were going to charge me a higher price than I could rent it myself, although I pay extra on my policy for them to provide a rental to me in case my car gets disabled!
