Is USAA A Good Insurance Company? Reviews From Over 4,267 Customers

I assume it’s like most others. USAA is, of course, offered to military personnel, retired military, and their families. Since my bill has skyrocketed to $1,459, I’ve been upset that my car costs that much to insure. I’ve had this car since January 2016. I haven’t had any accidents, and I don’t drink alcohol. My car mostly sits in the garage. It has approximately 67,800 miles on it. My bill is up over $200 from last year, and about the same increase the year before. I just don’t understand. Make of it what you will.

You’re pricing yourself out of the market. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to stay with USAA.

We have had no problems with USAA. It is easy to communicate with them, and we can easily access them.

USAA seems like the least expensive option available, but they still pad the coverage charges extremely generously. It seems being an insurance agent is a lucrative occupation if you're a good liar.

I have been and continue to be a member for over 40 years. Apparently, there is a disconnect between their auto rates and market reality, unfortunately. I would never have changed if it were not for the ONE HUNDRED PERCENT higher cost with the same coverage from Progressive. I will be writing to Mr. Juan Andrade, CEO, to make it abundantly clear that someone in their actuarial department is not doing a remotely good job. Extremely disappointed.

I've had USAA for a long time and have received excellent service over the years. I recently got quotes from other companies, and no one else could provide the same coverage at the same rate. Not even close!

They have been very good with me.

Customer service is great, awesome, super, and amazing. I guess that is why the price/cost is so high.

Overall good. However, more than once I was sent emails stating I did not pay insurance for the month. I set it up monthly. They charged me double the next month. Plus, my rate of $99 for minimum coverage went to $137. I am going to investigate this. I am not going to pay that, though most companies are higher.

USAA is a top-shelf insurance carrier. They are amazing at customer service. They are really about the members, and I've had things happen during claims where USAA literally added policy coverage after the fact, after I called in the claim, without adding to the premium.

I have been with USAA for decades. Except for higher monthly premiums, this company is wonderful. I wish for better discounts for senior citizens. I am 80 now, and my budget is tight. I still would recommend USAA to anyone.

If a friend had any kind of military background, I'd definitely recommend they try USAA. For me, they have beaten every quote I've been given so far, hands down.

Great experience, except for the pricing. Two vehicles, both Liability Only minimum policies, one minor incident (hit by another vehicle, no injuries, 2 years and 10 months ago) still almost $100 for coverage with low yearly mileage.

I hesitated on calling and getting them to lower my insurance expense; that was a mistake. They already had both my auto and home, and I should have called them first. I had already been in touch with four other companies when I called USAA. The USAA agent saved me money, completely reviewed my policies, and did it treating me with dignity and respect.

If you or a family member is or was in the US military, active or honorably discharged, USAA is a great option. They are rated number one in claims processing. They tend to be a little more expensive than other insurance companies.

Like any insurance, I feel like I'm dealing with a bookie. They are betting I'm going to screw up, and they adjust for a rock hitting the windshield. I have a 20-year-old Toyota on PLPD, which I call car hospice. I don't feel I should be paying for an agent.

The policy remained the same, but the cost for both home and auto insurance skyrocketed despite having no claims.

USAA is no better or worse than other major companies, but the prices of auto insurance increase every 6 months even without any claims. The homeowners' insurance went up by over $500.00 upon renewal this month, despite having no claims. The same coverage can be obtained for much less.

As a military veteran, I have admired this company for many years. Last year, I obtained both home and auto insurance. This year, they announced that I could no longer use Noblr, USAA's pay-as-you-drive policy. However, they assured me that the new USAA pay-as-you-drive program is both better and cheaper. But that's not the case. It's nearly $100 more each month and over $1000 more every year. It feels like a bait-and-switch tactic.

They were recommended by a friend, but they're too expensive for me. I don't have any tickets or accidents, yet I'm paying almost $400 a month for one vehicle. That seems ridiculous to me.

This used to be a good company, but the rates have skyrocketed and the customer service is dismal.

They are not truthful about covering your vehicle repairs. My vehicle was damaged by rubber on the road and required $2000 worth of repairs. They approved the repairs, but they were never carried out. Later, they claimed a check was paid but refused to provide proof or even the name of the payee. Meanwhile, I was left for 2 years with my car held together by zip ties instead of being repaired. Then they reported that I was in a preventable accident. A giant piece of tire rubber on the road at highway speeds at night with a car on either side of me, and it was my fault? They were not honest throughout the process.

They are more expensive than other companies as they keep raising the rates every six months.

I've been a member for 25 years. It's not worth it anymore, neither their banking nor their insurance.

The customer service was a disaster! I received no help from them. I was told that my vehicle form would be delivered in 2 to 3 days. However, I haven't received it yet.

After 17 years with USAA, they dropped me because I missed one payment, even though I had notified them that I would be late. 17 years!

Although Consumer Reports rates them among the top 10 best insurance companies, they grossly overinflate the replacement cost on home insurance, which significantly increases premiums.

I would advise you to consider other options. I was paying $1000 a month with USAA. I switched to State Farm with the exact same coverage and deductible, and now I'm paying $440 a month. How is that possible? In my opinion, USAA is overpriced and taking advantage of people's hard-earned money.

It's not very good. I'm being charged a lot of fees ranging from 56¢ to $1.12 for each transaction or payment made. I feel like I'm overpaying for full coverage for a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser because I filed two claims for accidents that weren't my fault. I wasn't found at fault and I never received a citation, yet I'm being penalized because I filed. The insurance coverage in this country feels like a scam and there's no refund, credit, or reward for good driving.

I used to believe that USAA was expensive because they offered the best services, but my experience proved otherwise. I had been a customer for over 10 years and even convinced my then-husband to open a checking account with them. We then purchased auto insurance. However, after our separation, I was informed that he was the primary on the auto insurance and I had no rights to print an insurance card for my vehicle. Despite paying for the car insurance, I was unable to view the account. I was upset that they refused to discuss the account with me.

USAA just became too expensive. Every six months, the cost increased without any rise in benefits. I had to find cheaper insurance.

It's too hard to get past all the checks and balances to verify you're a member. There are too many questions and memory items to get past their firewall. Lastly, everyone is working remotely, and you can hear the family activities in the background.

They increase premium rates without notifying you well in advance. They even raise the premium for a minor fender bender, like pulling out of a driveway into an illegally parked vehicle.

I was in an accident which was not my fault, and my insurance increased to $118 a month. I don't drive my car much, less than 50 miles a day. Additionally, I have home insurance with USAA and my payment increased by $100. As a veteran, I find this totally wrong.

The tracking for a discount is not satisfactory.

It's quite difficult to speak with a human. They only allow limited access to the website if you're not the one who set it up. Did I mention it's difficult?

I have been with USAA since 1973. Over the last 52 years, USAA has lost focus on their original mandate of serving Officers in the Air Force. Personally, I feel they decided at some point to compete with the big guys. As soon as they did that, they were drawn into the pool of greed. USAA claims they have low prices, but they don't!

Compared to others, USAA is way too expensive. Their customer service blindly defends the cost and can't objectively explain the costs.

I believe they overcharge and are not willing to discuss any discounts on your policy.

From my recent interactions, they have been dismissive and argumentative. I have already started finalizing my next premium with another company. While filing an insurance claim with USAA is a breeze, the monthly payments are not. For just liability with a tow option, I was paying well over $200. In the almost 18 years I’ve been with them, payments have never been under $200. There is no loyalty discount or safe driving discount. I would recommend considering other options like GEICO or Progressive.
