High rates
The rates will increase every single policy period, regardless of your location, whether you have an accident or get a ticket or not. They will blame it on the area and needing to be able to meet needs.

USAA has been my insurance company for 50 years. I have been satisfied in the past, but in recent years they have fallen behind other companies in terms of rates for older drivers like me. I am 81 years old, fully retired, do not commute, and do not drive any distances beyond a local grocery store and my gym twice a week. Unfortunately, USAA has not offered competitive rates for people like me: a retired octogenarian who rarely drives my 13-year-old car.

The service was very slow. I had an accident in September, and after two claims, the fixes were only completed last week. No one ever called me back, and I never received any return calls from the adjuster. I will never go with this company again.

Skyrocketing Rates
I assume it is like most others. USAA is, of course, offered to military personnel, retired military, and their families. Since my bill has skyrocketed to $1,459, I have been upset that my car costs that much to insure. I have had this car since January 2016. I haven't had any accidents, I don't drink alcohol, and my car mostly sits in the garage. It has approximately 67,800 miles on it. My bill is up over $200 from last year and the same for the year before. I just don't understand. Make of it what you will.

Tina's Warning
Do not go with USAA. They changed my amount from $97 to $160, saying their rates went up. To me, that sucks. The only way my rate should change that much is if I increased my coverage or lowered my deductible, but I didn't do any of those. Am I right? Still, it skyrocketed. I had to drop down to just liability on one vehicle. Don't use USAA.

Why I Chose to Leave USAA After 17 Years
USAA insurance company is great for filing claims quickly and easily. They pay claims promptly and are super helpful. However, when it comes to truly caring about their members, it's disappointing. I have credit cards, bank accounts, my car loan, and car insurance all under USAA. Personally, after battling cancer and health issues, getting USAA to show compassion for my situation was nonexistent. They only seem to care about active duty members, which is the only group they will help in a financial crisis. For that reason, I am really disappointed in USAA as a whole. I think for the money, it's not worth it. There are other companies that will insure my car just the same for cheaper. I don't need to carry the USAA brand and overpay when they won't do anything for a member going through something catastrophic.

USAA has lost what it was formed to do: provide low-cost insurance for military officers. Corporate profit was not a motive. Now, exorbitant salaries are paid to executives, leading to incentives that raise member costs.

USAA lied about coverage
I've had USAA for 6 months. I was told an accident I had 3 years ago would be off my record by the time it renewed. I called back when I found out it did not and would not be for 2 more years. I was also told that the mileage tracker was just like a game and they knew nothing about my total mileage. Now I just don't trust anything they say!

USA's Monitoring Practices
I do not care for their big brother approach. They monitor your hands-free phone calls and deduct points for talking, which affects your premium. They also took my average miles driven per year and divided it by 12. If I go over my monthly allowance, I pay more for my next premium. Ridiculous!

USAA 50/50
Expensive. They are decent if you are in an accident - they arrange a rental (if you have that coverage) and contact the other driver's insurance, and manage the claim. Homeowners - they don't cover wind nor flood (found this out the hard way after the agent neglected to tell me after I returned from an overseas assignment).

Verify what you are told vs. what policy actually applies
I'd say they are great at collecting premiums, but not so great with claims. Be sure you do your own research and record the information the representative explains to you. It does not necessarily mean your policy reflects what you're told by the agent.

Not happy
Discounts only apply if you drive a certain number of miles each month that they require. I'm a disabled, service-connected veteran, senior citizen and don't do any unnecessary driving. USAA took away my discounts and increased my premium. I'm 65, have no accidents ever, am a non-drinker, and non-drug user. My car is 10 years old now, so I dropped full coverage. My monthly payment went from $176.00 to $76.00. After losing my discount, my monthly payment went up to $108.00.

USAA not recommended
I had my debit card hacked, and the bank had to create a new account, which caused all of the autopayments to be rejected until I got a new card and account number. Since it was a hack used to purchase bitcoin, the bank fraud investigators took longer than normal to get everything switched over. Just about every company was great about the failed charge once they heard about the reason. Not USAA. They sent major emails the second the charge was rejected and kept piling on. I called them, and they were unapologetic and rude. I asked them if they kept track of how long a person has been a customer. They told me I had been a customer for 37 years. They could not have cared less and then started trying to intimidate me by asking if I was still active duty and needed to update their records with this info, which they had for 25 years. They have poor customer service and high rates. Not the company they used to be. They were the only company I left through the whole experience. I would not recommend them, especially after all of the fraud that has come out of the company in recent years.

I don't like that you only get the discount if you're enrolled in their monitoring safe driving program. It's not easy for someone like me who has a hard time navigating on my phone. I've tried to do it on the phone with one of their agents, but it didn't go through, so they raised my monthly payments. I'm on auto-pay, so I'm not very happy.

The Old Bait and Switch
There's no flexibility, and if you miss your first payment by a day, they will cancel your policy. Then, they make you get a new quote and double the price for half the coverage. It's unbelievable that they treat veterans and their families like that.

Keep Car in Garage
I tried to get help with our new car after a gravel truck carrying large chunks of gravel or concrete lost some, hitting several vehicles, including mine, while traveling down Interstate 35 through Austin, TX. There was no stopping as traffic was moving. I got pictures of the truck and cars, contacted insurance customer service, and still nothing! It seems even advice can't come without a price these days, and the monthly payment isn't cheap! So, I'm still driving around with a broken windshield and large dents in the hood and side of the car. I guess I was at fault for driving behind this truck on Austin's roadway.

Check your coverage closely
After I paid off my car that was financed with them, they did not let me know I could reduce part of my coverage to save money. They let me pay for coverage that I did not need for three years. When I finally caught it, their reps were clear and upfront: USAA has no responsibility to make sure that my coverage was correct. So I overpaid more than $3600 in three years and they told me too bad. So much for looking out for service members.

I made a choice that I'm not so sure was a smart move.
All done on the computer. Have not had any face-to-face or telecommunications with people. USAA wants to monitor personal driving habits of an individual who drives just about 30 miles a week, is an octogenarian, and rarely goes out. If there is no response to their monitoring, they hike the insurance rates automatically for "lack of monitoring."

Not What They Used to Be
They are not what they used to be since they opened membership to the Enlisted. They spend too much on advertising, for example, the deal with Kansas City. I am not sure about their objectives these days. It seems that they are targeting anyone who is even vaguely related to a military member. My father was a Navy Officer, and I am a Marine Corps Infantry Officer. I meet people who have no clear idea about the Military, yet they are considering USAA insurance. However, when they check the costs, they find them far higher than the competition. I am unsure why I am still a member. My friends tell me to wait, but I think that the change I am waiting for will never happen. I have been a member for 40 years, which is too long.
