Best car insurance discounts for TX teens

Many insurance companies in Texas offer teen driver discounts to help lower car insurance costs. While discounts vary by insurer, some common options include:

  • Defensive driving course: Younger drivers may qualify for a discount for completing an approved defensive driving course.[2]

  • Good student: Teen drivers in Texas can save money by maintaining good grades, usually a B average or higher.

  • Safe driver: Using a telematics app to track your teens’ driving habits can help keep costs down, as long as they practice safe driving habits.

  • Multi-vehicle: Families with more than one vehicle can often qualify for a multi-car discount.

Why is car insurance so expensive for teen drivers in Texas?

Teen drivers tend to be riskier to insure, so companies typically charge them higher rates. Local Texas factors also affect rates, including:

  • High crash rates: While teens and young adults make up 9% of the population in Texas, they accounted for 19% of all motor vehicle crashes in 2024.[3] Higher crash rates increase insurance premiums because you’re more likely to file a claim.

  • Unsafe driving behaviors: Younger Texas drivers often have riskier driving habits, like speeding, distracted driving, and not wearing a seat belt.[4]

  • Uninsured drivers: 14.5% of Texas drivers don’t have car insurance, according to the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I). A higher rate of uninsured drivers leads to higher premiums.

Texas car insurance requirements for teen drivers

All Texas drivers must have minimum liability coverage. You need at least $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident of bodily injury liability coverage, and $25,000 of property damage liability coverage.[5]

All insurance policies in Texas also include personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. But you can decline these coverages in writing.

The following table shows the required and optional minimum coverage limits required in Texas.

Coverage Type
Minimum Amount
Required or Optional?
Bodily injury liability per person$30,000Required
Bodily injury liability per accident $60,000Required
Property damage liability$25,000Required
Personal injury protection (PIP)$2,500Optional
Uninsured/underinsured motorist$30,000 / $60,000 / $25,000Optional

To get a Texas driver’s license, teens must complete a graduated driver’s license (GDL) program. The program consists of two phases:

  • First phase: Teens can apply for their learner’s license at age 15 after completing the classroom portion of a state-approved driver’s education course. Young drivers must have their learner’s license for at least six months before moving to the next phase.[6]

  • Second phase: At age 16, teens can apply for a provisional license after completing the behind-the-wheel education requirements. The provisional license allows them to drive independently, but with some restrictions.[7]

Consequences for teens driving without insurance in Texas

Consequences for teens caught driving without insurance include fines, higher insurance rates, and suspension of their license or vehicle registration. Fines for a first offense range from $175 to $350. Fines can increase to more than $1,000 for repeat offenses.[8]

Texas uses the TexasSure program to reduce the number of uninsured drivers in the state. TexasSure is an electronic program that verifies the accuracy of insurance information, making it harder to drive without insurance.

How to get cheaper car insurance for teen drivers in Texas

Teens pay some of the highest insurance rates in Texas compared to other age groups. But you have ways to lower your costs, including:

  • Complete a driver education course. Texas teens who complete a driver’s education course may qualify for a discount.

  • Maintain good grades. Many Texas insurers offer good student discounts to teens who maintain at least a B grade average.

  • Practice safe driving. Many insurance companies offer telematics programs that reward safe driving habits with lower rates.

  • Add them to a policy. It’s usually cheaper to add a young driver to an existing policy rather than them buying a separate auto policy.

  • Increase your deductible. Choosing a higher deductible typically lowers your premiums. Just make sure you can afford to pay higher out-of-pocket costs if you need to file a claim.

  • Comparison shop. Comparing quotes from multiple insurance companies is a quick and easy way to save money. Rates for teens can vary significantly between insurers in Texas, especially in larger urban areas like Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Should your teen be on your policy or buy their own?

It’s usually cheaper to add a teen to an existing policy than to buy a separate policy. For instance, the average annual cost of an individual teen policy in Texas is $4,864. But the average annual cost of a family policy is only $3,648. That’s a difference of $1,216 per year.

If your teen wants to buy their own policy and is younger than 18, they’ll need written consent from a parent or guardian.

The table below shows the average monthly and yearly costs for teens on their own policy and teens on a family policy.

Policy Type
Average Monthly Cost
Average Yearly Cost
Teen on family policy$304$3,648
Teen on own policy$405$4,864
Cost difference$101$1,216
Disclaimer: Table data is based on real-time Texas quotes from Insurify’s network of 500+ insurance partners. Actual rates may vary depending on the policyholder’s individual profile and coverage needs.

While adding a teen to a family policy may be cheaper, buying a separate policy makes more sense in some situations.

For instance, if a teen owns a car in their name, an insurer may require them to have their own policy. Insurers often prefer that the vehicle title, insurance, and registration match the primary driver.

If your teen doesn’t live at home, they might also need their own policy. Insurance companies base rates on factors like ZIP code, traffic density, and where you park your car.

For example, if your teen moves from your family home in Corsicana to Dallas, your insurer may require them to have a separate policy due to Dallas’ population density and heavier traffic.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 250 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
