My experience with GEICO started off positively because the premium was competitive, the online purchase process was straightforward, and I was able to pay my policy in full upfront. Unfortunately, my experience quickly deteriorated during the underwriting process.
As a first-time car owner and new immigrant to the U.S., I was asked to provide several underwriting documents. I submitted everything requested via the designated email address, but there was no confirmation that my documents had been received or reviewed. When I called customer service multiple times, different representatives gave me different answers, and none of them had access to the underwriting email inbox to verify what had actually been submitted. Meanwhile, I continued receiving mailed notices warning that my policy would be terminated, which created unnecessary stress and uncertainty.
After several weeks and numerous follow-up calls, I finally spoke directly with someone in the Underwriting Department who clarified the actual outstanding items. The issue wasn’t my willingness to provide documents—it was a lack of communication and coordination between underwriting and customer service.
My advice to anyone considering GEICO is to keep copies of every document you submit, save every email, document every phone call, and proactively follow up with underwriting. GEICO has competitive pricing, but there is significant room for improvement in its underwriting communication process, especially for customers with unique circumstances such as first-time buyers or new immigrants.
