Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Florida: State Farm

If you’re looking for basic liability coverage, State Farm offers the most affordable liability car insurance in Florida, averaging $106 per month — that’s less than the statewide average of $164 per month.

Liability insurance covers damage you cause to others and their property, but it won’t pay to repair your own vehicle.

Agent Tip: Is liability-only coverage enough?

Liability-only coverage meets Florida’s legal requirements, but for many drivers, it may not be enough. Since Florida is a no-fault state with many uninsured drivers, having only liability coverage could mean you end up paying for repairs, storm damage, or hit-and-run accidents yourself.

Overpaying for Insurance
Reviewed in New York on February 18, 2026
I have been with State Farm Insurance from 1967 to 2026, which would be 59 years, minus 2 1/2 years I was in the military. State Farm Insurance was always great to me, and I always had a local State Farm Insurance office and agent that made everything simple. I did enjoy having that kind of experience and service. After all the years that I’ve been with them and asking if there was any way that I could qualify for a reduced rate and being told no so quickly or without checking made my blood boil. I’ve been hearing this for years, “If you have an insurance agent you’re throwing your money away.” After contacting a number of insurance companies and getting insurance quotes for the same type of coverage, I’m finding that I have been paying premiums that were way too high. I can save $1,500-$1,750 a year for the same type of coverage, not dealing with an insurance agent. That’s a lot of money, so I started looking for insurance companies that can give me better rates for the same coverage I had.

My premiums have steadily increased, and it has been difficult asking if there are any discounts available for me. I'm retired now and don't drive as much as when I was working. They don't seem to have any discounts for seniors or folks that don't drive as much anymore.

Why was I canceled?

1/14/26: Liked what I saw and purchased Auto Insurance. 1/29/26: Received an email requesting a "Physician's opinion statement." I did not see this requirement in the many pages of fine print. Was given 30 days to submit. 1/31/26: Via email, I requested information on how to cancel my policy and stated that I do not release medical data to anyone. I did not request the policy be canceled. 2/01/26: Relented. 2/03/26: Hand-delivered request to primary care doctor and made an appointment for an Ophthalmologist for 02/10/26. 2/07/26: Received a USPS letter from MileAuto stating the policy would be canceled effective 3/01/26. The reason given was that "Policy no longer meets underwriting requirements." I have no idea what requirements this refers to.

Florida car insurance requirements

Like most states, Florida requires that drivers meet certain insurance requirements. For example, as a no-fault state, car owners must maintain personal injury protection. This coverage pays for 80% of all necessary medical expenses (up to your coverage maximum) for you and your passengers, regardless of who caused the accident.

Florida law also requires you to maintain liability coverage for any property damage you may cause in an accident, though there’s no minimum liability requirement for bodily injuries — a rare exclusion.[1]

Here’s a look at Florida’s minimum auto insurance requirements:

Car insurance rates across Florida cities

Where you live in the Sunshine State significantly affects your car insurance premiums. Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an FR-44 in Florida: State Farm

Florida requires certain high-risk drivers to file an FR-44 certificate rather than the more common SR-22. An FR-44 requires higher liability limits and typically results in higher premiums.

FR-44 drivers in Florida must maintain $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $50,000 in property damage liability coverage. Alternatively, you can purchase an auto insurance policy with a combined single liability limit of $350,000. Either way, you need to maintain the FR-44 status for three years.

The table below shows the cheapest FR-44 car insurance rates in Florida, with State Farm offering the lowest rates.

The below rates in Florida are estimated rates current as of: Tuesday, February 17 at 11:00 AM PST.

Florida car insurance FAQs

Florida drivers often have questions about coverage, costs, and state requirements. The answers below can help you understand what to look for when comparing car insurance quotes in Florida.

  • What is the cheapest car insurance in Florida?

State Farm is the cheapest car insurance company in Florida, with liability rates of $106 per month, according to Insurify data.

  • How can you reduce car insurance costs in Florida?

Comparing quotes from multiple companies at renewal and bundling policies are two of the best ways to reduce Florida car insurance costs. You can also save by increasing your deductible, maintaining a clean driving record and good credit, and asking your insurer about available discounts.

  • What is full-coverage car insurance?

Full-coverage car insurance refers to a policy that typically includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. It helps pay for damage you cause to others, as well as repairs or replacement for your own vehicle after covered incidents. Full coverage doesn’t cover every situation, but it’s often required if you lease or finance a vehicle or own a new or high-value car.

  • Is The General a good car insurance company?

It depends. The General can be a good option for drivers in Florida who need high-risk car insurance. Its rates are higher than average, so if you have a clean driving record, you may want to consider other insurers.

  • Does your credit score affect your car insurance in Florida?

Florida law prohibits insurers from using your credit score to set auto insurance rates.[9] But insurers may use a credit-based insurance score, which relies on credit report information rather than your actual credit score. Drivers with poor credit often pay more for car insurance than drivers with good or excellent credit.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
