The United Services Automobile Association, aka USAA, provides financial services and products to military members, ex-members, and their immediate families. Despite the name, USAA isn’t just about automobiles: the insurer offers not only a wide range of insurance products but also bank products like checking and savings accounts.
Who Benefits Most and Least from USAA Insurance?
- U.S. military and former military members, including officer candidates, National Guard, and Reserves
- Close relatives of military members, including spouses, former spouses, children, and stepchildren
Not the best for…
- Customers without any military background
USAA: Serving those who serve
People serving in the military often have unique financial concerns. Deployment can make it difficult for them to do basic financial tasks, like getting their insurance renewed on time. And they may need help to figure out how to make the best use of the unique products and services available to them.
USAA doesn’t just have great financial products; it also has advisors available to help USAA members use those products and tools to help calculate expenses.
USAA has an excellent customer service rating compared to its peers, and its rates also tend to be significantly lower than those of other insurance providers. Negative reviews usually relate to USAA’s limited availability. Because USAA only accepts military members and families, most shoppers won’t qualify to get insurance coverage from them.
Most USAA financial products are designed around the special needs of military members, with types of coverage that other insurance companies simply don’t offer. All in all, this provider can be a great choice if you qualify for USAA membership.

USAA Auto Insurance Coverages
USAA offers policyholders the following types of insurance as part of their “standard” car insurance coverage.
USAA offers customers both property damage and bodily injury liability, which are mandatory in most states. These cover you if you’re at fault in a car accident and need to pay for medical bills and property damage sustained by the other driver. For example, if you were at fault in a car accident with another car, USAA would pay for the damages to the other vehicle. If you were to crash into someone’s fence or mailbox, USAA would pay for that, too.
Comprehensive and collision coverage
These coverages pay for damage to your vehicle, regardless of who was at fault in the accident. Collision coverage pays for damage that occurs when your vehicle hits something else (be it another car or something like a tree). Comprehensive coverage is for any type of covered damage that’s not the result of a collision: for example, if your vehicle is stolen, vandalized, or damaged by hail.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
What happens if you’re in an accident that’s someone else’s fault, but that person doesn’t have enough insurance coverage to pay for your vehicle repairs or medical expenses? In that case, USAA’s uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can help. If you’re hit by someone who has no insurance coverage or if you’re the victim of a hit-and-run, uninsured motorist coverage would apply. Underinsured motorist coverage, not surprisingly, is for accidents where the at-fault driver has some insurance coverage, but not enough to pay for all the expenses. Some states require this coverage on your auto insurance policy, while others consider it optional.
Medical Payments coverage
If you’re involved in an accident, USAA’s medical payments coverage will help pay your medical expenses, legal fees, and any emotional distress the accident caused you. Medical payments coverage is not intended as a replacement for health insurance, but it can complement your existing health insurance coverage. For one thing, your health insurance will help with your medical costs from an accident, but it won’t do a thing for your passengers, whereas your medical payments coverage extends to everyone in your vehicle.
Personal Injury Protection coverage
USAA offers Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage as your state requires. If you’re a resident of a no-fault accident state, you’re required to have either medical payments coverage or PIP coverage. PIP covers your medical payments in the long-term aftermath of your accident, not just the immediate aftermath. This means if you or your family members sustained injuries that require regular hospital visits and rehabilitation, PIP would cover those costs. PIP tends to cover more expenses than medical payments coverage does, but unlike medical payments coverage, you’ll have a deductible to meet. Check to make sure you’re comfortable with the level of PIP coverage before purchasing your insurance policy.
The following are optional coverages that are available as add-ons to a standard USAA car insurance policy:
Towing and Labor Coverage and Roadside Assistance
USAA offers a full-scale 24/7 roadside assistance package through Agero. The roadside assistance services include help with gas delivery, locksmith services, tire changes, battery services, and towing to the nearest repair facility. USAA even offers reimbursement if you have this coverage but end up using a different provider for some reason. Call 1 (800) 531-8555 for 24/7 assistance, assuming you’ve purchased this coverage option.
Rental Car Reimbursement
USAA will reimburse you for the cost of renting a car if you’re in an accident and your vehicle is undergoing repairs. But, of course, it will only cover the costs if your policy covered the original accident. The rental reimbursement amount depends on the class you choose when purchasing this coverage.
USAA lets you purchase accident forgiveness as an add-on to your insurance coverage. If you buy this coverage, your premium price won’t increase after your first at-fault accident, as it typically does if you get into an accident. Accident Forgiveness can apply for any driver on your policy, but can only be used once per policy.
Other Insurance Products Offered by USAA Insurance
In addition to the below insurance products, USAA also provides non-insurance products like checking and savings accounts, investment accounts, loans and credit cards, and retirement accounts.
Dwelling protection, personal possession protection, liability coverage, identity theft protection, and loss of use coverage are standard inclusions for homeowners insurance policies provided by USAA. You can also tack on coverage for earthquakes, other structures on your property, and even home-sharing coverage (if you rent out part or all of your house).
If you rent rather than own your home, USAA can provide renters insurance that includes personal property coverage, liability coverage, loss of use coverage, and medical payments coverage. Unlike most insurers, USAA provides flood insurance and earthquake coverage as part of the basic renters insurance policy.
USAA offers both term life insurance and permanent life insurance. These policies work like most life insurance policies, but also include certain military-specific benefits. For example, USAA life insurance provides coverage during wartime, which is rarely an option with other insurance providers.
USAA’s motorcycle insurance coverage is quite similar to its auto insurance plans. Standard coverage includes collision, comprehensive, liability, medical expense coverage, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Plus, 24/7 roadside assistance is available as an add-on.
Classic Car Insurance
Do you own a classic car or motorcycle that you drive only rarely? USAA classic car insurance may be a good fit for your vehicle. This coverage is specifically for classic cars that spend most of their time in a locked garage or other secure buildings. It includes agreed-value coverage (based on the vehicle’s condition, rarity, and add-ons), mileage plans based on your annual mileage, and automatic 30-day coverage for new vehicles that qualify as classic cars.
Valuable Personal Property (VPP) Insurance
VPP insurance is a special policy that you can tack on top of a USAA renters insurance or homeowners insurance policy. Valuable personal property coverage is extra coverage for property valued at $100 or more. VPP provides a higher level of coverage than the basic home policy and also doesn’t include a deductible. These policies include replacement cost coverage, meaning they reimburse your losses based on how much it would cost to replace the item today.
If you have substantial assets, the liability coverage levels provided by standard car insurance and other policies might not be enough to protect you. That’s where umbrella coverage can help. An umbrella insurance policy complements basic policies such as auto and home insurance. USAA’s umbrella coverage picks up where the basic policy’s liability coverage lets off and can cover up to $5 million for you.
How Can I Buy Auto Insurance from USAA?
To purchase insurance from USAA, you’ll first need to become a member. See the USAA website for eligibility rules and to start the application process.
Once you become a member, you can get a quote directly from USAA, although you may want to use the USAA car insurance calculator on the website before you commit.

How Can I Pay for My USAA Car Insurance Policy?
USAA accepts almost all methods of payment, including paying online, by phone, or through the mail.
Credit card or bank account
You can log in to your USAA account and pay with your credit card or your checking or savings account, or call 1 (800) 531-8722 to pay on the phone.
Through your bank
If you have a USAA bank account, you can use the USAA Pay Bills feature to pay your insurance premiums (and other bills, too). Once you’ve completed the setup process, you can easily make future payments through your bank’s bill pay system.
You can set up automatic monthly payments from your bank account or debit or credit card. Go to the USAA AutoPay setup website to get started.
Call 1 (800) 531-8722 to pay for your policy over the phone.
How Often Will USAA Increase My Premiums?
If you get into an accident…
Even safe drivers can get into unfortunate situations, and most of the time, getting a ticket or a violation on your record will lead to premium increases—especially if you were getting a good driver discount before the accident. In fact, your auto insurance rates will most likely increase even if you weren’t at fault in the accident. Taking a defensive driving course or other driver training may help; ask your insurance agent or call USAA to confirm.
If you’re a loyal customer…
Some USAA policyholders complained of price hikes even though they had maintained clean driving records. It’s wise to compare rates with other insurance providers every time your policy is up for renewal, even if your rates with your existing insurance company don’t change.
If you file a claim…
The number of claims you file will also impact your USAA premiums. If you file a claim, even for an accident where you weren’t at fault, your USAA rate will probably increase. Purchasing accident forgiveness for your policy can help keep your rates from climbing, at least for your first accident.
How Does USAA’s Claims Process Work?
You can file a claim online by going to the USAA claims page and following the prompts. You can even file a claim for yourself or someone else as a guest without creating an account on the website. You can also call 1 (800) 531-8722 if you would rather speak to a representative. Once you’ve filed a claim, you can manage and track its progress from the same page by entering the claim number and policy number.
How Can I Cancel My USAA Car Insurance Policy?
You can call your local agent or speak with a USAA representative at 1 (800) 531-8722 to cancel your policy.
Cancellation fees vary by state and policy, so you should consider canceling your policy at the end of the policy period to avoid such fees. Make sure you already have another insurance policy lined up for your car, so there are no gaps in your insurance. You’ll also want to hold off on canceling your plan until you have your proof of insurance letter.
How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with USAA?
If you have a USAA auto insurance policy, you can tack on a ridesharing endorsement to protect you during the time between when your personal coverage ends and your Uber or Lyft policy takes over. You’ll still need to buy coverage from Uber or Lyft to protect you while you actually have a paying passenger in the car; USAA’s rideshare endorsement is only active between when you log into the Uber/Lyft app and when you get matched with a passenger.
At this time, USAA rideshare coverage is available in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.
Car Insurance Companies Similar to USAA
USAA exclusively sells insurance to former and current members of the military and their families, unlike any other insurance company. Due to the nature of USAA, it regularly offers the cheapest insurance across the board. Still, companies like Progressive, GEICO, and occasionally State Farm have similar and competitive rates to those from USAA.
According to Insurify’s internal database of over 1.9 million car insurance applications, and analysis of external sources, drivers who used to hold USAA car insurance most often switched to the following companies:
USAA Car Insurance Customer Satisfaction and Policyholder Reviews
Positive reviews for USAA come from policyholders who have been with USAA for decades — something you don’t always see — and are very happy with its level of service.
Negative reviews usually had to do with USAA’s customer service, which seems to be hit or miss, and its ability to accurately estimate the actual cash value for a totaled car.
USAA Mobile App Review
USAA’s app is relatively well-liked on the Google and Apple app stores, with a rating of 4.7 on the Google Play store and 4.8 on Apple’s App Store.
You can use the app to view your policy details and account balances, make payments, and file claims.

USAA SafePilot Review
USAA’s telematics program SafePilot offers enrolled drivers a discount for up to 20% for installing an app that tracks their driving patterns. The app, available for download on the Apple and Google app stores, follows things like how hard you brake, how often you use your phone, and whether you call people when you drive. You get a 5% discount just for signing up. In this way, the app ascertains how “safe” your driving is, and accordingly dishes out a discount at your next policy renewal.
The app sounds like a great idea—after all, 20% off your premium could end up saving you hundreds of dollars a year, depending on your policy. But many user reviews reveal the app isn’t very good at tracking driving patterns.
One of the app’s selling points is that you don’t even have to open it every time you drive—it tracks your driving automatically regardless of whether or not it’s open. The SafePilot app claims to be able to differentiate between when you’re the driver or the passenger, but reviews claim the app can’t do this accurately.
Users also complain that the SafePilot app unfairly categorizes listening to music under “phone usage,” which lowers their discount. Many also said that the app drains their phone batteries, although developer comments on the Apple store said USAA is working on this problem.

USAA Auto Insurance Overview
Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, USAA was founded in 1922.
USAA got its start because a group of Texas-based Army officers couldn’t get insurance due to their “high-risk” status. They founded USAA to insure each other’s vehicles. Over the years, USAA has expanded into other types of insurance and a range of other financial products and services. Membership has also grown over the years, from Army-only to all branches of the USA military and their immediate families.
A.M. Best, a credit rating company that assesses the financial strength of insurance companies, gives USAA an “A++,” denoting superior financial health and ability to pay out claims.
