Travelers Insurance: Reliable Insurance For Low-Risk Drivers
Travelers has provided American drivers with quality auto insurance for the last 122 years. Travelers is a good option for drivers planning to add their spouses and teenage children to their auto insurance policies, and those who also hold other Travelers insurance products. Travelers doesn’t exactly dish out the cheapest rates to high-risk drivers, so if you’re under 30 or have a spotty driving record, Travelers might not be the right choice for you.

Travelers Auto Insurance Coverages
Travelers offers policyholders the following coverages as part of their standard coverage. You should check in with a Travelers agent to confirm what standard coverage entails in your state.
Travelers offers customers both property damage and bodily injury liability, which are mandatory in most states. If you’re at fault in a car accident, Travelers will pay to cover the vehicular damage and medical expenses sustained by the other party. If the other party were to file a lawsuit against you as a result of the accident, Travelers would cover those costs as well.
Medical Payments Coverage
If you’re in an accident, regardless of who’s at fault, Travelers will pay for the medical expenses of everyone in your car who was injured.
Personal Injury Protection Coverage
Personal Injury Protection covers you, your family members, or any passengers in your car if you’re in an accident. Also called no-fault insurance, PIP is required in some states while optional in others. If you have PIP, Travelers will cover medical expenses, compensate for lost wages, and reimburse funeral costs if you, your family members, or passengers were injured.
Travelers provides collision coverage, which covers damage if your car collides with another object or vehicle, or if your car rolls over.
This covers any damages to your vehicle that wasn’t caused by a collision. Generally, comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by storms, floods, fires, vandalism, theft, and hitting a deer or other animal.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Getting into an accident that was someone else’s fault is already pretty bad. But it could be far worse if the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the cost of damages to your car. Travelers offers uninsured motorist coverage that would cover your medical bills and vehicular damage in such a scenario.
Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Travelers Insurance
The following are optional coverages that are available as add-ons to standard Travelers auto insurance:
Travelers offers basic roadside assistance, which includes up to 15 miles of towing free of charge, as well as services like jump-starting your car, changing your car’s tires, delivering fuel, and unlocking your car if you’ve lost your keys.
Travelers’ Premier Roadside Assistance program includes basic coverage as well as 100 miles of free towing, trip interruption coverage, and personal property coverage. Trip interruption coverage means Travelers will reimburse you up to $200 a day (for three days), to help cover lodging and meals if your car breaks down over 100 miles from your home and isn’t in driving condition. Personal property coverage has a $500 limit and covers any stolen or damaged property and valuable items that are covered under comprehensive or collision loss.
Travelers’ accident forgiveness program is a part of its Responsible Driver Plan. The basic plan offers accident forgiveness and minor violation forgiveness for any isolated accident or minor violation you might have in a 36-month period. This means Travelers won’t increase your premium, as insurance companies typically do if you have an accident or receive a ticket.
The premier version of the plan includes the basic plan as well as decreasing deductibles and total loss deductible waivers. The decreasing deductible means that for every six months everyone on your insurance plan is accident-free, you earn a $50 credit (up to a $500 limit), that you can use to pay the deductible for a covered loss. A total loss deductible waiver means you don’t have to pay a deductible if your car is totaled.
New Car Replacement Coverage
This plan includes new car replacement, loan/lease gap coverage, and glass deductible. If your vehicle is totaled in a covered loss, Travelers will pay (minus relevant deductibles) for a brand new car of the same make and model as the totaled vehicle. This doesn’t include cars that were stolen or damaged by flood and fire. This applies only for the first five years that you own the vehicle, and you must be the original owner of the vehicle.
The loan/lease gap coverage comes handy if your car is financed or leased, and is then totaled. The coverage pays the difference between the actual cash value of the totaled vehicle and the unpaid balance of the loan/lease.
The glass deductible can be used in place of your comprehensive coverage. If your car is vandalized or damaged by a storm, but you only have glass damage, you only have to pay the glass deductible. Glass damage here means damage to the windshield, windows, mirrors, or exterior lights.
Rental Car Insurance Coverage
If your car was severely damaged in an accident and is currently in the shop for repairs, Travelers will pay for your rental car. This add-on only applies if the original vehicle was damaged in a loss covered by your collision or comprehensive insurance. Your vehicle also needs to be out of commission for longer than 24 hours for Travelers to reimburse you for the rental car.
Travelers offers IntelliDrive, a telematics program, which could get you up to a 20 percent discount. You can enroll in the program by downloading the IntelliDrive app, which will then capture and score your driving habits over 90 days.
Enrolling itself gets you a small discount, which varies based on your state. Once you’ve completed the program, you get a discount at your next policy renewal. Of course, the discount only applies if the app considered you a good driver. If your driving was deemed risky, you might end up paying an even higher premium, except in Washington D.C., Maryland, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
IntelliDrive is available in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C.
Other Insurance Products Offered by Travelers Insurance
Travelers has a rich history of providing multiple insurance products in addition to car insurance. Remember, bundling policies, like merging your home insurance with your car insurance policy could get you a hefty discount! Travelers offers the following insurance products:
Travelers’ home insurance includes dwelling protection and covers other structures on your property like gardens, sheds, and fences. Personal property, personal liability, and loss of use coverage are also part of standard coverage. At the same time, you can purchase extra insurance to cover things like identity fraud monitoring and water damage.
Travelers renters insurance includes personal property coverage, personal liability protection, medical payments coverage, and additional living expenses if your rented property is damaged and inhabitable. You can also protect your jewelry and other valuable items as an add-on to standard coverage.
Travelers no longer sells life insurance itself, but still provides term life insurance through its subsidiary Primerica.
Wedding & Special Event Insurance
Planning big events can take up a lot of your time and money. Travelers offers insurance for big events like weddings and anniversary parties, to safeguard your investment in case your caterer backs out last minute or if you need to move your venue last minute.

How Often Will Travelers Increase My Premiums?
Premiums are all relative—you could start out with a very low rate, only to find your rate has jumped when you want to renew your policy. Travelers could increase your premium due to a couple of different factors, like where you live, your profession, and your discounts. So if you’ve recently moved, switched jobs, or no are no longer eligible for certain discounts, you could face higher premiums.
You could also find yourself facing higher premiums after changes to your driving record or after filing a claim. Here are some scenarios where Travelers would increase your premium:
If you get into an accident
If you get into an accident, Travelers is probably going to increase your auto policy premium. This is especially true if you also file a claim pertaining to damage that was a result of this accident. Luckily, Travelers has an accident forgiveness program that could “forgive” you for having an accident. In other words, it wouldn’t increase your premium if you purchased Travelers’ Responsible Driver Plan, which includes accident forgiveness.
If you file a claim
Travelers will definitely increase your premium if you file a claim. On average, Travelers raises your auto insurance premium by 35 percent after you file a claim. For other claims, such as comprehensive claims, Travelers will increase your premium by 15 percent on average. If the cost of repairs is below your deductible or is only slightly higher, you might consider paying out-of-pocket instead of filing a claim. However, if the cost of repairs greatly exceeds your deductible, you should definitely file a claim—that’s what insurance is for, after all!
If you have a violation
If you were convicted of a moving violation like speeding or driving under the influence, you become a high-risk insurance driver, and it will cost more to insure you. As a result, Travelers may increase your insurance rate. This, of course, depends on the violation itself; for example, a speeding ticket isn’t usually penalized as much as a DUI.
How Does Travelers’ Claims Process Work?
If your car is damaged and you’ve decided to file a claim, you can do so by logging into your MyTravelers account, or by calling 1 (800) 252-4633. The Travelers claims center is available 24/7.
Make sure you take pictures at the scene of the accident that clearly document your vehicle’s damage, so you can include those when you’re filing a claim. If the accident was severe and involved other people, you might even consider filing a police report, which you should also include when filing the claim.
Before filing a claim, you might consider surveying the damage and getting an estimate for the damages. If the cost of damages is lower or about the same as your deductible, you might consider paying out-of-pocket, since filing a claim could lead to a higher premium in the future.
Once you’ve filed a claim with Travelers, a claim professional from Travelers will contact you to coordinate a time for them come evaluate your car’s damages. They might also contact other people who were involved in the incident.
The claim professional will then make an assessment determining whether the loss is covered and how much Travelers is willing to pay for the damages. If Travelers decides to pay the claim, they can either mail you the check or send the money to you electronically.
If the damage to your vehicle was someone else’s fault, Travelers might pursue them and their insurance company for reimbursement. If Travelers is reimbursed, they might also refund your deductible.
Reviews on various websites mentioned that pursuing a claim with Travelers can be a long and frustrating process. According to the 2018 U.S. Auto Insurance Claims Satisfaction Study, Travelers’ claims satisfaction was only “about average.”
How Can I Cancel My Travelers Car Insurance Policy?
If you’re unhappy with your Travelers auto insurance policy and want to cancel it, you can call 1 (800) 842-5075. Travelers might ask you to mail in a cancellation letter.
Travelers might also require you to pay a cancellation fee if you cancel your policy before the policy term ends, this is usually a percentage of your remaining premium. If you can avoid it, you might want to consider canceling your policy at the end of the policy term instead.
Driving without insurance is illegal and increases your premiums in the future, so make sure you have another policy lined up on the day you cancel your Travelers policy. You might consider using Insurify, a website that lets you compare quotes from up to 20 insurance companies at a time.
How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with Travelers?
Travelers offers coverage to rideshare drivers only in Colorado and Illinois. The coverage applies to the period between drivers opening the rideshare app and before accepting passengers.
Usually, the period afterward is covered by the rideshare company’s insurance. This is a handy add-on for drivers who already have Travelers auto insurance and are currently working for rideshare companies in Colorado and Illinois.
