Progressive: Will Flo come through for you?

The Progressive Corporation, immediately recognized by its high-energy mascot Flo, is the go-to insurance company for over 18 million Americans. After all, Flo does seem to make a relatively dry insurance experience more exciting.

Armed with her name-your-price tool, Flo claims to make sure she has coverage options ready for any price range. Indeed, Progressive often offers some of the lowest, cheapest, most competitive prices across the insurance industry, which is one of the reasons it’s such a popular company.

Progressive also provides coverage in all 50 states across the U.S., a telematics mobile app, and a wide range of coverage options for several types of vehicles.

However, Progressive’s quality of service can often leave customers dissatisfied. Additionally, J.D. Power & Associates gives Progressive’s customer service and claims satisfaction only an “average” rating, which can also be a drawback for some customers.

Progressive Car Insurance Quotes and Discounts

Shopping for insurance doesn’t always mean picking the first company that gives you a decent quote. Sometimes the cheapest car insurance quote doesn’t mean you’ll have the best coverage, but that doesn’t mean good coverage always comes with a hefty price.

That’s why it’s important to compare prices, discounts, and coverages across different insurance companies. This can be a time-consuming process, but if you use Insurify, you can compare quotes from up to 20 different companies in a matter of minutes!

Auto Insurance Quotes Comparison: Progressive vs. GEICO and Other Competitors

To see how Progressive’s rates stacked up with those from its competitors, Insurify’s data team compared Progressive’s car insurance quotes to those of its competitors.

Below are the quotes for a 30-year-old female driver from Houston, Texas who drives a 2010 Honda Civic and has a clean driving record:

Insurance companyQuote
Progressive$64/month
GEICO$94/month
Elephant$126/month
Liberty Mutual$152/month

Progressive is clearly the cheapest option for this driver profile when compared to quotes from GEICO, Liberty Mutual, and Elephant.

These would be the drivers’ quotes if they were to get a speeding ticket for going 75 mph in a 50 mph zone:

Insurance companyQuote
Progressive$74/month
GEICO$117/month
Elephant$142/month
Liberty Mutual$197/month

Once again, Progressive churned out the lowest rate of all the carriers sampled for this profile.

Finally, these would be the rates for the same driver, but with an at-fault accident on their record:

Insurance companyQuote
Progressive$95/month
GEICO$166/month
Elephant$182/month
Liberty Mutual$154/month

Progressive’s quote was significantly cheaper than those of its competitors. While GEICO, Liberty Mutual, and Elephant quoted well over $100/mo, Progressive kept it below $100 at just $95.

For this specific profile, Progressive consistently offered the lowest rates of the lot. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get the same quotes. That’s why you should compare quotes across several insurance companies, instead of just relying on one company. It might seem like a lot of work, but Insurify’s here to help you. If you use Insurify, you can compare up to 20 different insurance companies at a time and make an informed decision!

Drivers Can SAVE with these Discounts from Progressive

Progressive offers a host of discounts, making its low prices even more affordable. Progressive offers a discount for members of the military, homeowners, drivers with low mileage, those who have been continuously covered, people who pay for their entire policy in full, and policyholders who go paperless.

States Where Progressive Car Insurance is Offered

Progressive offers auto insurance in all 50 states, plus Washington, D.C.

Click here to find out how you can find the cheapest car insurance in your state.

Progressive Auto Insurance Coverages

Progressive offers state minimum liability insurance, full coverage (which includes comprehensive and collision coverage), as well as uninsured motorist policy and medical payment coverage.

Liability insurance
Liability insurance is the basis of any car insurance policy. Forty-nine out of 50 states require liability insurance for all drivers. This insurance pays for the medical bills, vehicular or property damage, and lost income for the other party in an accident where you’re at fault.

Comprehensive insurance
Progressive’s comprehensive coverage pays for damages your car may sustain in an “Act of God” or unforeseen circumstances like hail, fire, vandalism, and theft. Dropping this type of coverage could cut down your Progressive auto insurance by about $22. But it could also cost you thousands of dollars if you end up having to pay out-of-pocket for unforeseen damages.

Collision insurance
If you buy collision coverage, Progressive will pay for any vehicular damages your car sustains in a collision accident. A collision accident is any scenario where your vehicle collides with another vehicle or object. This means if you hit another vehicle, Progressive would pay (minus the deductible) for the damages. If your vehicle accidentally collided with your neighbor’s mailbox, Progressive would pay for that too.

Medical Payments
Accidents can often result in severe injuries or even death. In such cases, Progressive would pay for any medical or funeral costs associated with an accident, regardless of whose fault the accident was. Also offered as personal injury protection (PIP) in some states, this coverage applies to you and any family members that are passengers in your car. This would also apply if a vehicle were to hit you while you were walking or riding a bike.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Sometimes, if you’re in an accident, the person at fault may not have enough insurance, or any insurance at all, to cover the cost of your damages. In such a case, you might have to spring for the expenses all by yourself. But if you purchase uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, Progressive would pay for the damages instead. This coverage also applies to hit-and-run accidents.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Progressive Insurance

Everyone’s car insurance needs are unique and aren’t always covered by basic car insurance. That’s why Progressive also offers special add-ons that other companies don’t always provide.

Roadside Assistance
There’s nothing worse than being stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. With Progressive’s roadside assistance coverage, provided by Agero, you can get help 24/7 just by calling 1 (800) 776-2778. Here’s a quick rundown of what Progressive’s roadside assistance package covers:

  • A certified towing vehicle can tow your car anywhere within a 15-mile radius. If there isn’t a mechanic shop within that radius, Progressive will tow your vehicle to the nearest qualified mechanic shop.
  • If your car is stuck in mud, snow, water, or sand, Progressive will come to help get your car out. However, your vehicle needs to be within 100 feet of a road or highway.
  • If your battery is dead, a Progressive representative can come to jump-start it. If you have an electric car, Progressive will tow your vehicle to the nearest qualified charging facility.
  • If you’ve run out of gas, Progressive will deliver some.
  • If you lost your keys or accidentally locked them in your car, Progressive will send you a locksmith. You will be charged for the cost of the key replacement.
  • If you have a flat tire, someone from Progressive will help you change it at no cost, as long as you provide the spare.

Gap Insurance
Gap insurance is a good option for anyone who finances or leases their car. If you total that car, Progressive will help you pay the difference between what you still owe on the vehicle and its actual cash value. However, Progressive caps the payment at 25 percent of your car’s actual cash value.

Rental car reimbursement
If your car is in a repair shop due to a “covered accident” (i.e., covered under your comprehensive or collision insurance), Progressive will reimburse you for any car you rent in the meantime. Typically, Progressive will reimburse you $30 to $50 daily.

Custom parts and equipment value
If you’ve added many custom parts to your vehicle, such as a flashy stereo or a high-tech navigation system, Progressive will insure those car parts. Typically, companies don’t insure any car parts that weren’t part of the original manufactured vehicle. So if you’ve put in a lot of time, effort, and money into pimping out your car, you should probably insure those car parts.

Other Insurance Products Offered by Progressive Insurance

When Progressive was founded in 1937, it only sold auto insurance. Over the last 80 years, however, it has expanded beyond auto insurance and currently sells multiple insurance products, including home insurance, renters insurance, life insurance, motorcycle insurance, and boat insurance, among others.

Home insurance
Progressive offers standard home insurance in addition to condo insurance and mobile home insurance. Progressive also provides homeshare coverage for those who rent out their homes on platforms like Airbnb.

Renters insurance
Progressive offers renters insurance if you don’t own a home but still want insurance for your belongings and protection from liability issues in your rented property. Progressive’s renters insurance includes personal property coverage, liability coverage (which protects you in case someone injures themselves on your rented property), and additional living expenses if your rented property is damaged.

Life insurance
Progressive also offers a variety of life insurance coverages. It offers term life insurance, which covers a set period; whole life insurance, which you can borrow against; and universal life insurance, which you can customize throughout your lifetime.

Motorcycle insurance
Progressive’s motorcycle insurance extends to ATVs and UTVs, cruisers, custom bikes, dirt bikes, scooters and mopeds, sportbikes, touring bikes, and, of course, vintage bikes. Progressive offers a host of exciting add-ons, as well as a variety of discounts to help you afford those add-ons.

Boat insurance
Progressive insures fishing boats, pontoon boats, powerboats, personal watercraft such as jet skis and sea-doos, and sailboats. If your water vehicle is valued at or below $500,000 and is up to or less than 50 feet long, chances are Progressive will insure it.

How Can I Buy Auto Insurance from Progressive?

Customers who want to buy a Progressive auto insurance policy can do so online on Progressive’s website, by calling 1 (866) 749-7436, or by connecting with a local agent.

If you want to buy your Progressive policy through an agent, bear in mind Progressive sells through independent, local insurance agents, which means the agent doesn’t just sell Progressive policies. Chances are, the agent you meet might have better deals from other insurance companies, too; make sure you ask before deciding to purchase.

You should also try shopping around for insurance online before meeting an agent since independent agents are limited only to the companies that work with them. They may also be biased towards companies that pay them more.

Consider using Insurify, an online quote comparison website that allows you to compare prices, discounts, and coverage levels from up to 20 different insurance companies, all from the comfort of your own home!

How Can I Pay for My Progressive Car Insurance Policy?

Progressive accepts payment via credit card, online check, personal check, money order, PayPal, and Electronic Funds Transfer from your checking account.

You can pay your Progressive auto insurance bill through the following channels:

  • Online, by logging into Progressive’s customer service site
  • By phone, by calling 1 (800) 776-4737. California residents should call 1 (800) 300-3693.
  • By logging into the Progressive mobile app
  • Through mail, by asking your Progressive representative for precise instructions on how to send policy payments through the mail.

How Often Will Progressive Increase My Premiums?

We all know the drill—you find a seemingly great deal and sign up for an insurance policy, only to find your rates increasing every six months at policy renewal. How did this happen? Where did that great deal go?

Well, there are several reasons your insurance premium may increase: you may no longer be eligible for certain discounts, you may have moved to another city or state, or you may have added more family members or cars to the policy.

Moving violations and accidents also increase your insurance premium. Here’s a breakdown of how certain violations and accidents can impact your Progressive premium:

After an accident
Accidents, regardless of who was at fault, will most probably increase your Progressive premium. If you were at-fault in an accident, Progressive automatically deems you a high-risk driver, which means it costs more money to insure you. If you were involved in an accident where you weren’t at fault, your premium will still increase, but not by as much.

If you’re enrolled in Progressive’s Loyalty Rewards (most policyholders are automatically enrolled), you’re eligible for Progressive’s small accident forgiveness. This means that if your accident resulted in a claim of less than $500, Progressive wouldn’t increase your premium.

If you’re a Progressive policyholder for longer than five years and have gone at least three years without an accident on your record, you’ll qualify for large accident forgiveness. With large accident forgiveness, your premium won’t increase regardless of how expensive the resulting claims are. This program varies by state, so make sure you talk to your Progressive agent about specifics.

After a moving violation
Moving violations, especially DUIs or multiple speeding tickets, will almost definitely increase your premium rates. These speak to a pattern of driving behavior, so if you have a moving violation, Progressive will deem you a high-risk driver. This also depends on the nature of the violation. So if you have a speeding ticket for going only five miles over the limit, Progressive may not increase your rate by as much as if you were going fifteen miles over the limit. Progressive doesn’t increase premiums if you have a non-moving violation like a parking ticket.

How Does Progressive’s Claims Process Work?

Accidents happen—regardless of how safe a driver you are. The first thing you should do after an accident is to remain calm and make sure no one on the scene needs serious medical attention.

After you’ve made sure everyone is safe, call the police and exchange insurance information with all parties involved. After this, you should call Progressive at 1 (800) 776-4737 or log on to the Progressive app to report the accident.

Take pictures of all the damage incurred by every car involved in the accident. You will most likely speak to an estimator who will visit you to inspect the damages and estimate how much it’ll cost to fix your car.

A Progressive representative will then ask you if you want to get your car repaired or if you want to receive the payment for the repairs instead. You can ask for an estimate of how much the repairs would cost you, compare that with your deductible for the costs, and make a decision accordingly.

Remember, if the cost of repairs is lower than your deductible, you might consider not filing a claim at all. Claims typically raise your insurance premium regardless of who was at fault.

If you decide to get the repairs, your Progressive representative will help you schedule your repairs with either an in-network repair shop or one of your choosing. If you choose an in-network repair shop, Progressive guarantees your repairs for as long as you own your vehicle.

Progressive manages the repairs from start to finish. All you have to do is pick up your car from the shop!

What if my car is a total loss?

If your car is discovered to be a total loss (i.e., the cost of repairing it exceeds its actual value), Progressive will pay you the actual cash value of your pre-loss car. The actual cash value of your car depends on factors like age, mileage, add-ons, etc.

If you still owe money on your car loan or have leased your car, you might have to pay out-of-pocket to the lender if the payment exceeds the actual cash value of your vehicle. If you have loan/lease or gap insurance, however, Progressive will pay off the difference between the actual cash value of your car and the money you owe on it.

How Can I Cancel My Progressive Car Insurance Policy?

If you’re unsatisfied with your auto insurance, you can call 1 (800) 776-4737 to cancel your Progressive policy

Progressive doesn’t usually have cancellation fees, but this can vary depending on your state and policy. To avoid any extra charges, you might consider canceling your policy at the end of your policy period.

When you’re canceling your policy, you can fully expect the Progressive agent to try to convince you to stay by offering you discounts and lower rates. So if price was your priority when deciding to cancel your policy, you’re in luck!

But if you’ve decided you really don’t want to be a Progressive policyholder anymore, make sure you have an insurance policy lined up for right after, because driving without insurance is illegal.

Consider using an insurance comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare up to 20 different insurance company quotes at a time!

How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with Progressive?

Progressive offers rideshare insurance in 35 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Progressive’s rideshare insurance covers drivers during the period between opening the rideshare app and actually accepting a passenger. Usually, neither the rideshare company’s insurance nor the driver’s personal insurance would cover damages incurred during this period.

Click here to better understand how insurance works for rideshare drivers.

Progressive’s rideshare insurance is available as an add-on to your personal Progressive auto insurance policy. This means you must have a Progressive policy to purchase rideshare insurance.

We ran the quotes for a 30-year-old male rideshare driver in Chicago, Illinois. Without rideshare insurance, his auto-insurance quote was $41 a month. Once we added rideshare insurance to the policy, his quote increased $17 to $58 a month.

Of course, these are only quotes for one type of driver profile, and you may find your Progressive insurance rate to be higher or lower depending on your car, driving history, and location.

Insurance Companies Similar to Progressive

Progressive is one of the largest, most recognizable insurance companies in the United States. As such, its target demographic isn’t limited to just one. Progressive prides itself on consistently offering some of the lowest rates in the industry regardless of your age and driving history. Other iconic companies like GEICO and sometimes even State Farm, often offer rates similar and competitive to those from Progressive

But if you’re looking to get away from larger companies like Progressive and GEICO, you might consider going with a smaller insurer like Mercury or ELEPHANT insurance, which can often offer rates on par with Progressive

According to Insurify’s internal database of over 2 million car insurance applications and analysis of external sources, drivers who used to hold Progressive car insurance most often switched to the following companies:

  1. Elephant
  2. Mercury
  3. Dairyland
  4. Liberty Mutual
  5. GAINSCO

And those who now hold Progressive most often previously held:

  1. GEICO
  2. State Farm
  3. Allstate
  4. Esurance
  5. Liberty Mutual

Progressive Customer Satisfaction and Policyholder Reviews

Progressive generally has high customer satisfaction ratings on sites like ConsumerAffairs, Trust Pilot, and Insurify.

Positive reviews mostly mention Progressive’s very low, competitive prices, as well as its seemingly speedy claims process. An auto insurer with a fast claims process is usually difficult to come by, and most consumer reviews for other companies often complain about the very things that seem to be Progressive’s strengths.

However, where most companies struggle with claims, Progressive appears to struggle with payments. The majority of negative reviews for Progressive complained about what a hassle payments can be, with many people saying they were overcharged on numerous occasions and that Progressive takes a long time to rectify the process and refund the payment—if they ever do.

Progressive Snapshot Review

Progressive offers a “usage-based” insurance program that uses a telematics device to track your driving habits. Depending on your state and location, Progressive will either send you a plug-in device that goes in your car or ask you to download the Snapshot app.

The app or device will then track your driving habits, like how often you use your phone, how hard you brake, and how fast you accelerate. Snapshot will also track how often you drive late at night (driving between 12 AM and 4 AM reduces your discount), and how often you drive in general.

Is Progressive Snapshot worth it?

On average, most Progressive policyholders get a $26 discount just for signing up, and policyholders who finish the program save an average of $145. The discount is applied when policyholders renew their Progressive policy, which is usually every six months.

Progressive’s Snapshot program is a great way to save money on your insurance policy, but it might not be the best option if you have a job that requires you to take any late-night shifts, or if your daily commute exceeds 30 miles.

If you live in an area with icy, unpaved, or wet roads, Snapshot will also probably ding you for hard braking even when you aren’t pressing down on your vehicle’s brakes. This will most likely also lead to a reduced discount.

However, many users also say they found the app’s data very useful, as it made them more careful and mindful of their driving.

Will Snapshot increase my rates?

Yes, high-risk driving might lead to an increase in your Progressive premium. Progressive’s website says two out of 10 drivers get a rate increase—that’s 20 percent of all snapshot users. So if you’re worried your driving might be considered high-risk, you might want to reconsider signing up for Snapshot.

User reviews on the Apple and Google app stores also show users complaining about how the app requires users to always turn on their location, leading their phones to die frequently. App ratings on the Apple store were quite abysmal, with just a 1.9 out of 4, while ratings on the Google store were far better, with a strong 4 out of 5. Chances are, Android users might have a better Snapshot experience than Apple users.

Progressive Mobile App Review

Progressive’s app for iPhone and Android allows policyholders to view their policy information, check their bills and make payments to Progressive, and get immediate access to their insurance ID card and other related documents. Users can also make and track claims and contact Progressive’s 24/7 roadside assistance immediately.

Progressive app users’ major gripe seemed to be that setting up their policy on the app sent them in circles and that the process took much longer than it should have. Progressive representatives, however, seem to be aware of the issue and are currently working to fix it.

Some users also complained that the app didn’t properly store user credentials, and lost information every time users updated the app. Overall, however, users seemed generally happy with the app’s features and Progressive’s responsiveness to technical issues.

Frequently Asked Questions: Progressive Car Insurance

Does Progressive have good insurance?

This depends entirely on what you are looking for in an insurance carrier. If you’re looking for a company with a big name and cheap rates, Progressive is probably a good option. However, if you’re looking for stellar customer service, Progressive might not be the best option for you.

Does Progressive have cheaper rates than GEICO and State Farm?

Again, this depends on your driver profile and history. Usually, GEICO and Progressive have pretty similar rates, but Progressive tends to penalize violations and accidents less than GEICO does. State Farm also has similar rates to Progressive, but is usually a couple of dollars higher, depending on what state you’re in.

How do I know I’m getting the cheapest rates?

In short: you don’t. You can’t rely on just one insurance company to always churn out the cheapest rates. Just because Progressive had the cheapest rates for your friend, doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll have the cheapest rate for you. You could use a free quote comparison website, where you can put in your information and compare quotes from over 10 companies side by side. You should consider using Insurify, which lets you do this in just a matter of minutes for free!

Is Progressive the cheapest car insurance in your area?

You can never rely on one insurance company to give you the best or the cheapest quote. Just because one company had a great deal for your friend doesn’t mean it’ll work the same way for you.

That’s why it’s essential to do your research and compare quotes among other insurance companies

This can be time-consuming, but Insurify helps you compare auto insurance quotes in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is put in some basic information about your driving profile, and you can compare up to 20 quotes at once for free!

Progressive Auto Insurance Overview

Joseph Lewis and Jack Green launched Progressive in 1937 to provide low-cost insurance to all vehicle owners—a legacy that has since endured.

The company has since been a trailblazer, starting in the 1940s, when Progressive was the first to introduce a drive-in claims process. Progressive was also the first company to allow customers to pay for policies in installments, and the first company to oversee both the claims and repair process on behalf of car owners.

In addition to auto insurance, Progressive also offers commercial auto insurance, classic car insurance, homeowners insurance, renters insurance, boat insurance, and many other insurance products.
