How to choose the best car insurance for you
Your particular needs and driving profile will determine the best car insurance company for you. Here’s how to weigh insurers to find your best fit:
Calculate how much coverage you need. You must buy at least your state’s minimum required amount of liability coverage (higher limits are better because they provide greater financial protection). If you lease or finance your car, have a high-value vehicle, or wouldn’t be able to afford to repair or replace it on your own, you’ll need full coverage, too.
Consider add-ons. Depending on your lifestyle and vehicle, you may want to add optional coverages like gap insurance, accident forgiveness, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, or roadside assistance. Add-ons typically increase your premium.
Look for discounts to lower your premium. Most insurers offer discounts like good driver and safe vehicle savings, good student discounts, bundling auto with home or renters insurance, and more. You may qualify for more than one.
Compare quotes from multiple companies. Shopping around can help you find the right coverage, discounts, and insurer for your needs. You should compare quotes every six to 12 months, depending on when your policy renews.
Highest-rated car insurance companies: Real customer reviews
Our team analyzes auto insurance rates and industry scores, but we know hearing from an actual customer can give you a different insight into an insurance company. That’s why we gather verified user reviews. Each review is from a real customer who’s compared quotes through Insurify.
When we collect user reviews, we ask them to rate their insurance company based on their experiences and policy features. That way, while each insurance company has an overall user review score, you can also see how they score in specific categories.
The companies in the table below are insurers that our users choose as the best. Here’s how they score in five important categories that drivers care about the most. All scores shown in the table below are based on a 5-point scale.
Insurance Company | Overall Score | Customer Service | Value | Discounts | Coverage Options | Policy Transparency |

Why is car insurance so expensive?
Expensive repair costs of high-tech and electric vehicles were largely behind car insurance rate increases in 2025.
With severe weather causing more comprehensive coverage claims, auto insurers are also increasingly factoring climate risk into rates. Severe climate risks, like hailstorms and wildfires, were a major factor, but changes in insurance requirements also contributed to the spike.
With many factors influencing premiums, it’s a good idea to compare car insurance quotes to find coverage that fits your needs. Many unique, individual factors also affect your premiums.
How much car insurance coverage you need
Every state but New Hampshire requires minimum liability coverage, and even then, it has some financial requirements. You need to buy at least your state’s minimum coverage, but if you want more financial protection in the event of an accident or weather damage, you’ll need to purchase more coverage.
If you finance or lease your vehicle like most U.S. drivers, your lender will require full coverage. If you drive a rare or higher-value car, you may want additional protection even if you own your car outright because repairs will be more specialized and expensive.
Types of car insurance coverage
As you’re shopping for a policy, keep these common types of car insurance coverage in mind:[2]
Liability-only coverage
This covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to someone else. Every state but New Hampshire requires some amount of liability coverage.
Full coverage
This typically includes collision and comprehensive coverage in addition to liability insurance. Collision insurance covers damage to your car in an accident, even if you’re at fault, and comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car from non-collision incidents.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Uninsured motorist coverage pays for damage from hit-and-run accidents and protects you if the at-fault driver has no coverage. Underinsured motorist coverage protects you if the at-fault driver has too little coverage to pay for your injuries and damages.
Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage
This typically covers medical expenses, lost wages, and funeral expenses for you and your passengers, no matter who’s at fault. If you live in a no-fault state, PIP may be part of your minimum coverage requirements.
Medical payments (MedPay) coverage
This add-on helps pay for medical and funeral expenses for you and your passenger in an accident, even if you’re at fault.
Gap coverage
Gap insurance covers the difference between your outstanding loan or lease balance and your claim payout if your car is declared a total loss following an accident.
Accident forgiveness coverage
This insurance add-on can prevent your premium from increasing after your first at-fault accident.

Methodology
Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).
Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:
- Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
- Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
- No additional coverage
- Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
- Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible
Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
