My Terrible Experience with State Farm
After over 5 years with State Farm, I've decided to move on after my next term. This company did not treat me well. I used their app to update my new vehicle information, and they charged me $200. Their system changed my information without my permission. All I did was enter the new vehicle information, but the system altered my policy details, such as indicating I didn't own my home when I do. My agent couldn't help me. So, good for you, State Farm. You got me for $200, but you also lost a loyal customer.

Why we picked this company

Nearly 8% of Florida drivers have an incident like a ticket, accident, or driving under the influence (DUI) conviction on their records, all of which can increase car insurance costs.

Fortunately, Progressive offers a wide range of discounts and usage-based programs that help Florida drivers lower their auto insurance premiums. If you have a mixed driving history, you may also find more flexible underwriting compared to some competitors.

Pros
  • Strong telematics and safe-driving discounts

  • Competitive rates for drivers with previous violations

  • Wide selection of policy options

Cons
  • Snapshot tracking program may increase rates for risky driving

  • Deductibles and coverage options can be confusing

  • Some drivers pay higher-than-average rates

Why we picked this company

Amica stands out in Florida for strong customer service ratings and claims satisfaction scores. Florida vehicles can be vulnerable to hurricane-related claims, like those for flood damage. Amica’s strong claims handling could be especially helpful for Florida drivers dealing with severe-weather claims.

Pros
  • Excellent customer service reputation

  • Strong claims communication

  • High customer retention rates

Cons
  • Higher premiums than some other insurers

  • Fewer discount opportunities

  • Limited availability for some high-risk drivers

  • To identify the four best car insurance companies for Florida drivers, we evaluated 200-plus regional and national companies. We analyzed thousands of user reviews from verified Insurify customers to identify which companies provided the best overall experience, claims and customer satisfaction, and overall value.

Whenever available, we considered scores and rankings from third-party organizations, such as AM Best and J.D. Power. We assessed multiple data points to rate affordability, coverage options, available discounts, customer satisfaction, and financial strength.

How much is car insurance in Florida?

Florida drivers pay above the national average for auto insurance. Full-coverage car insurance in Florida averages $235 per month, while liability-only coverage averages $137 per month. For comparison, the national average for full coverage is $186 per month, and liability coverage averages $98 per month.

Multiple metro areas with heavy traffic, hurricane and flood exposure, elevated vehicle theft rates, and a high rate of uninsured motorists can all drive up insurance costs for Florida drivers. Florida is also a no-fault insurance state and requires drivers to carry personal injury protection (PIP) coverage.[3]

Average car insurance quotes in Florida cities

Your location in Florida can significantly affect your car insurance rates. Drivers in heavily populated metro areas like Miami and Tampa often pay higher premiums due to heavy traffic congestion, elevated vehicle theft rates, and greater exposure to hurricanes and flooding.

South Florida also consistently ranks among the state’s most expensive regions for insurance due to costly claims and litigation. Meanwhile, drivers in smaller inland communities may pay less because they generally face lower traffic density, reduced storm-surge exposure, and fewer theft-related claims.

  • Miami regularly ranks among the nation’s most congested cities.

  • Coastal counties have higher hurricane and flooding exposure.

  • Inland North Florida communities generally experience lower catastrophe exposure than South Florida coastal metros.

Here you can see how average car insurance rates vary across numerous cities in Florida.

Disclaimer: Table data sourced from real-time Florida car insurance quotes from Insurify's 500+ partner insurance providers and quote estimates from Quadrant Information Services. Actual car insurance quotes in Florida may vary based on the policy buyer's unique driver profile.

Drivers in South Florida cities often pay among the state’s highest insurance premiums due to heavy traffic congestion, hurricane and flood exposure, elevated vehicle theft rates, and Florida’s costly litigation environment.

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in Florida

Car insurance rates in Florida can vary dramatically between insurers, even for drivers with nearly identical profiles. Some insurance companies may place more emphasis on your driving history or prior claims, while others may weigh factors such as ZIP code, hurricane exposure, vehicle theft rates, and traffic congestion more heavily.

Drivers in cities like Miami, Tampa, and Orlando often see much higher premiums than drivers in smaller inland communities because of heavier traffic, weather-related risks, and more expensive claims environments.

That’s why comparing auto insurance quotes from multiple companies is especially important in Florida. Shopping around can help you find the right balance between price, coverage, deductibles, and customer service.

To get the most accurate Florida car insurance quotes, you should:

  • Use the same coverage limits and deductibles across every quote so you can compare insurers fairly.

  • Include all licensed household drivers, which is especially important for multi-driver households, common in Florida.

  • Be honest about annual mileage, commuting patterns, and seasonal driving habits if you split time between Florida and another state.

  • Compare both minimum liability coverage and full coverage, since Florida’s minimum requirements may not fully protect you after a serious accident.

  • Ask about discounts for bundling auto and homeowners insurance, which can be valuable in a state with high property insurance costs.

  • Review comprehensive coverage carefully to understand protection for hurricanes, flooding-related damage, theft, and falling debris.

  • Ask insurers whether telematics or safe-driving programs could help offset Florida’s high premiums.

  • Compare the entire policy — including claims service, rental reimbursement, and uninsured motorist coverage — not just the monthly premium.

Florida car insurance requirements

Florida law requires you to carry minimum levels of liability insurance and PIP coverage before you can register a vehicle.[3]

Unlike most states, Florida doesn’t legally require you to carry standard bodily injury liability for basic vehicle registration. But if you cause an accident, you’re still financially responsible for any injuries. Many drivers choose to purchase higher, more comprehensive limits because of this risk.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires you to maintain continuous coverage for registered vehicles. This is true even if you’re not driving the vehicle or if it’s inoperable.

How to find the cheapest Florida car insurance

If you’re looking to lower your insurance costs in Florida, you can do a number of things to make yourself more appealing to insurers.

First, Florida allows insurers to use a credit-based insurance score during the quoting process. So improving your credit score can improve your insurance scores. From there, you should work to maintain a clean driving record, as accidents, speeding tickets, and other violations can cause you to pay more for car insurance.

You can also make your car insurance more affordable by:

  • Raising your deductible if you can afford the higher out-of-pocket cost

  • Bundling your auto insurance with homeowners or renters coverage

  • Asking about available discounts. Don’t just assume they’re all on the website.

  • Shopping for new quotes at least once per year

  • Considering usage-based insurance programs

  • Avoiding unnecessary claims for minor damage

Your age, credit, and driving history greatly affect Florida car insurance rates. These articles will provide you with more information on finding affordable car insurance in Florida based on your driver profile.

How car insurance costs have changed in Florida

Florida auto insurance premiums have increased steadily in recent years, according to Insurify’s most recent car insurance report. Rising repair costs, medical expenses, severe weather claims, and litigation trends all drove premiums higher during 2025.

Insurify data analysts expect rate increases to lessen in 2026. But insurers still feel pressure from hurricane exposure, repair cost inflation, and growing claims tied to flooding and severe storms.

Florida auto insurance FAQs

Florida drivers face unique insurance challenges stemming from congested roads, weather-related disasters, and frequent claims, all of which affect the insurance market. As you look for your next insurance policy, keep the following information in mind.

  • Who’s the cheapest insurance company in Florida?

Progressive offers the cheapest car insurance quotes in Florida, on average. But the best insurer for you depends on your driving record, location, age, and coverage preferences. That’s why it’s important to compare quotes from several insurers.

  • Why is car insurance in Florida so expensive?

Florida drivers pay high car insurance costs because of severe weather risks, heavy traffic, and high rates of car theft and uninsured drivers.

  • What do you need to get a car insurance quote?

Most insurers ask for your driver’s license number, vehicle information, address, driving history, and desired coverage levels to generate an accurate auto insurance quote. Some may ask for more or less information.

  • What is full-coverage car insurance?

Full coverage generally combines liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. It provides all the coverage of liability insurance, but it also covers your vehicle if it suffers damage from accidents, theft, storms, vandalism, or other covered events.

  • What type of car insurance policy do you need?

Florida drivers must carry PIP and property damage liability coverage at a minimum. Many drivers also choose bodily injury liability and full coverage for additional financial protection.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
