Milewise, the pay-per-mile car insurance program from Allstate, helps low-mileage drivers save money on car insurance. When you sign up for the Milewise program, you pay a daily rate and a per-mile rate. So, the less you drive, the more you’ll save through the program.

Milewise is a great option for stay-at-home parents, retirees, or anyone who works from home and drives fewer miles. Though it’s a non-traditional insurance policy, you still receive the same coverage and protection. But Milewise is only available in 22 states, and some drivers may receive higher rates with pay-per-mile insurance than with more standard coverage.

Quick Facts
  • Low-mileage drivers can save money with pay-per-mile car insurance.

  • A device that plugs into your vehicle’s diagnostic port tracks your mileage if you have coverage from Milewise.

  • Drivers with clean records pay rates as low as $57 per month for liability coverage and $124 per month for full coverage from Milewise.

What is Milewise auto insurance?

Milewise is a program that Allstate — a leading car insurance company that’s been in business for more than 90 years — offers to drivers. Allstate received an A+ (Superior) rating from AM Best, which means that the company has excellent financial strength.

Allstate introduced the first mobile telematics app when it launched Drivewise Mobile in 2014.[1] Telematics devices monitor mileage and driving behavior.[2] And in 2016, the company introduced the Milewise pay-per-mile insurance program.

If you don’t drive frequently, Milewise can give you more control over your insurance costs with the same access to coverage and customer service from Allstate.

How Milewise works

When you sign up for Milewise, you have two coverage options to choose from: Pay-Per-Mile and Unlimited.

The Pay-Per-Mile option charges a low daily rate and a per-mile rate every time you drive. If you choose the Unlimited option, you only pay a daily rate, regardless of how many miles you drive. You can also choose some combination of these two plans.

After signing up, you receive access to Allstate’s mobile app and a telematics device that plugs into your vehicle’s diagnostic port. This device tracks how much you drive to verify the accuracy of your per-mile rate. You can also view details about your trips and earn Allstate Rewards points.[3]

States where Milewise is available

Allstate offers coverage in 50 states, but it doesn’t offer the same insurance products in every location. Milewise is only available in the following 22 states:

  • Arizona

  • Delaware

  • Florida

  • Idaho

  • Illinois

  • Indiana

  • Maryland

  • Massachusetts

  • Michigan

  • Minnesota

  • Missouri

  • New Jersey

  • Ohio

  • Oklahoma

  • Oregon

  • Pennsylvania

  • Rhode Island

  • South Carolina

  • Texas

  • Virginia

  • Washington

  • West Virginia

Allstate Milewise vs. Drivewise

Allstate’s Milewise program and Drivewise insurance products are both telematics programs, meaning they collect information from a GPS-enabled device and vehicle diagnostics to determine the price of your insurance. Milewise is a pay-per-mile coverage, so the telematics device will send Allstate information about how much you drive daily to determine your insurance premium.

Drivewise measures your safe driving habits and rewards behaviors like obeying the speed limit, gradually braking, and putting your phone away while behind the wheel. Allstate advertises that safe drivers can save up to 40% by participating in Drivewise.

If you use your car infrequently or only drive short distances, Milewise is likely the best telematics option from Allstate. Drivewise is a good idea if you drive more frequently and practice safe habits on the road.

Milewise pros and cons

Pros
  • Save money: Drivers who spend very little time on the road can save money by signing up for Milewise.

  • Mobile app: When you sign up for Milewise, you get access to Allstate’s mobile app. This app lets you access your policy details, receive personalized driving feedback, and view vehicle diagnostics.

  • Same coverage: With Milewise insurance, you receive the same coverage and discounts that you’d receive on a standard Allstate policy.

Cons
  • Limited availability: Milewise is only available to customers in 22 states, so it isn’t an option for customers in most states in the U.S.

  • Tracks driving data: Milewise logs your mileage with a device that you plug into the vehicle’s diagnostic port. But it also tracks other driving data, like your speed, distance traveled, and time of day.

  • Bad for high-mileage drivers: If you regularly have to commute long distances, coverage from Milewise could cost more than a standard insurance policy.

What is Milewise’s mobile app?

As a Milewise customer, you can use Allstate’s mobile app to access your policy information, account balance, and miles driven. The app also tracks important information about your vehicle and driving history.

For example, you can use the app to receive personalized driving feedback and see your safe driving trends. You can also view vehicle diagnostics, receive car maintenance reminders, and find a local mechanic.

The Allstate mobile app has 4.8 out of 5 stars on the Apple App Store and 3.9 stars on the Google Play Store, so iPhone users seem to have a better experience with the app than Android users.

Average cost of Milewise auto insurance

Drivers can expect to pay an average of $57 per month for liability-only coverage and $124 per month for full coverage from Milewise.

Average rates from Milewise are much less than the national average of $106 per month for liability insurance and $172 per month for full coverage.

Age is one of the most significant factors that influence your car insurance rates because insurance companies view younger, inexperienced drivers as a liability risk. Statistically, young drivers have a greater likelihood of engaging in risky driving behavior and being in an accident.

Drivers ages 15 to 20 make up 5.3% of licensed drivers in the U.S. but represent 12% of drivers in all crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Drivers 20 years old and younger also have the highest fatal crash rate.[5] Teenagers and drivers younger than 25 typically pay more expensive insurance premiums than any other age group.

How to get a Milewise car insurance quote

Take the following steps to receive a Milewise car insurance quote:

  1. Visit Allstate’s website and provide your ZIP code and the type of insurance you want to apply for. You can also specify whether you want to bundle your policy with other insurance products.

  2. From there, you provide your personal information, including your name, address, and birthdate.

  3. Next, provide details about your vehicle. You can either provide the vehicle identification number (VIN) or just give the year, make, model, and body style.

  4. Estimate your annual mileage and outline any accidents or traffic violations you’ve had in the last five years.

  5. Once you provide all the necessary information, you’ll receive quotes for liability-only and full-coverage auto insurance.

Milewise car insurance discounts

Discounts can greatly reduce the cost of a policy. Here are the biggest discounts you can take advantage of with Milewise:

  • New car discount: You could earn a discount for buying a new car. However, new cars typically cost more to insure than used vehicles.

  • Smart student discount: Teens and college students can save on car insurance by maintaining good grades.

  • Safety discount: You could earn a discount for having certain safety features, like anti-lock brakes and anti-theft devices.

  • FullPay discount: If you pay for car insurance annually instead of monthly, you could earn a discount.

Milewise insurance bundling options

When you sign up for Milewise pay-per-mile car insurance, you have the option to buy more than just car insurance. You can save even more by bundling your insurance policies with Allstate.

For instance, you can bundle your auto insurance with renters, homeowners, and life insurance. Besides saving you money, bundling can simplify how you keep track of various insurance policies.

Milewise insurance reviews and ratings

Before you choose an insurance company, you should look into and understand the company’s reputation. Seeing what kind of experience other customers have had can help you determine if it’s the right fit for you.

Milewise customer reviews

Allstate has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and relatively few customer complaints. However, the company did earn only 1.3 out of 5 stars from 258 reviews on Trustpilot.

Some long-term customers cite satisfaction with coverage over the years, and many specifically name the agents that provided quality customer service.

Of the customers with complaints, some believe the company misled them when purchasing coverage, and others have had issues with the company approving claims in a timely manner.

Milewise ratings

Credit and customer service ratings are important metrics for determining the quality of insurance companies. These ratings demonstrate the company’s ability to pay its claims and how happy the average customer is working with them.

Milewise’s parent company, Allstate, earned the following ratings:

  • AM Best: A+ (Superior)

  • J.D. Power: Above-average customer satisfaction (853 out of 1,000) and below-average claims satisfaction (868 out of 1,000)

  • Standard & Poor’s: AA-

  • Moody’s: A3

  • NAIC Complaint Index: The company has an above-average number of complaints

Milewise vs. other pay-per-mile auto insurance

Due to the highly saturated car insurance market, you have other types of usage-based insurance (UBI) you can consider if Milewise doesn’t feel like the right fit for you.

Here’s how Milewise stacks up to some of its biggest competitors.

Milewise vs. Metromile

Metromile is another pay-per-mile car insurance company. According to the company, the average driver saves 47% compared to a standard insurance policy. And with Metromile, you never need to worry about going over your daily mileage. If you hit 250 miles in one day, the remaining miles are free — unless you live in New Jersey, which has a maximum of 150 miles.

Your policy comes with collision and comprehensive coverage, roadside assistance, and 24/7 support from the company’s claims team. However, Metromile only offers coverage in eight states, so the majority of customers in the U.S. can’t purchase insurance through the company.

Milewise vs. Mile Auto

Drivers can save between 30% and 40% on auto insurance by switching to Mile Auto, according to the company. Mile Auto provides a good option for college students, remote workers, and anyone who doesn’t drive much.

Mile Auto doesn’t require you to use a device to track your mileage, so it works well for customers who value their privacy. You just need to send the company a photo of your odometer once a month.

Milewise vs. Root

Another company that doesn’t require you to install a device in your car, Root tracks your mileage through its app by analyzing data from your smartphone sensors.

Root’s app also makes it easy to manage your policy, file a claim, and access roadside assistance. Root offers coverage in 34 states, so it has the widest availability of all four companies.

How to file an auto insurance claim with Milewise

Here are the steps you’ll take to file a claim with Milewise:

  1. Log into the app to file your claim.

  2. If you need help, contact customer support to help walk you through the process.

  3. Next, decide how you want to receive your payment.

  4. You can continue to track your claim status on Allstate’s mobile app.
