  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 55,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Punishment for 65+ years of no problems.
Reviewed in South Carolina on February 1, 2026
I have been licensed since two weeks before my 14th birthday, in other words, 65+ years. I had 2 tickets and 1 accident (that was in July 2024). It cost me a $25 fine and no points, yet my rate increased by 60%. This was the only claim against me over the years. I don't drive much, about 10,000 miles a year if that much, and yet I'm being punished for years of no problems. BTW, the patrolman questioned the ability of the on-lookers of the accident.

My policy doubled due to a parking issue. I was parallel parking and scraped the car behind me. It was my fault. But doubling my policy payment? I've been a customer for over thirty years. I owed the man behind me honesty, so I left a note on his windshield. However, the hike in my premiums is making it almost unaffordable to keep the car. They have been a good insurance company for the thirty-plus years I have enjoyed their coverage. I trust them. They send a locksmith or a battery jump when needed over the years. Two of my three adult children also use them.

Great service, pays claims quickly, may be overpaying
Reviewed in Virginia on January 16, 2026
Great service and coverage for their customers. They have been my auto insurer since 1978. They have covered every claim I have submitted. I have a 20-year-old Miata. A couple of years ago, the decayed convertible top was torn away when a storm came through. Over the years, it had been getting noisier and noisier in the car from wind blowing in through the tiny holes in the top. My wife suggested I try Geico before I paid out of pocket to replace the top. Much to my surprise, they covered the replacement. Very recently, I rented a car from Avis in New Orleans which had a number of scratches and dings when I got the car. I did not take photos at the time of the rental, but did get a walk-around from Avis noting the areas of damage at the time of rental. A couple of weeks after the return, Avis tried to charge me $5K for damages. I handed it off to Geico and they covered it. I don't know if they paid anything but I did not. There is, however, another side to Geico. My sister, who does not use Geico, was hit by someone with Geico. They jerked her around endlessly. She hates the company. Since I am a long-term customer, I am probably overpaying. I recently checked other companies and found their rates significantly lower. I haven't changed though.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Richmond

Finding the cheapest car insurance in Richmond depends on factors including your age, ZIP code, driving history, and desired level of coverage. While some of these factors are outside of your control, you can still do a few specific things to lower your insurance costs, including:

  • Avoid violations. Practice safe driving habits so you can avoid violations like speeding tickets and other infractions. In doing so, you’ll maintain a clean driving record.

  • Improve your credit. Car insurance companies can consider your credit history to predict how likely you are to file a claim, so it’s important to maintain good credit to keep your rates lower.

  • Ask about discounts. Insurers offer several discounts, from bundling coverage and multi-policy discounts to having a vehicle with certain anti-theft protection or driving safely. Be sure to ask about which discounts you may qualify for.

  • Shop around and compare quotes. Shop around and compare quotes from at least three different insurers to make sure you’re getting the best price.

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: Auto-Owners

Generally, seniors have the cheapest car insurance rates of any age group. But rates typically rise for senior drivers around age 70 because of a heightened risk of accidents. This is, in part, due to slower reflexes but also to the increased risk of costly medical claims in the event of an accident.[3]

But if you’re a senior driver, you can still find cheap insurance rates if you keep a clean driving record and take advantage of discounts. Senior drivers in Richmond pay an overall average of $152 per month for car insurance.

Here are some of the best monthly insurance quotes for seniors in Richmond.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: State Farm

Young drivers and teens also pay higher insurance rates than the general population. This is because insurers find that drivers younger than 25 get into more accidents and are more likely to engage in risky driving habits.[4] Richmond teen drivers pay an overall average of $355 per month for car insurance.

Some insurers offer discounts for student-age drivers who earn good grades or who complete a driver safety program. Young drivers may also save by staying on their parents’ insurance. Drivers younger than 18 won't be able to buy their own policies without the written consent of a parent or guardian.

Richmond car insurance quotes by credit tier

Virginia is one of many states that allow insurers to use your credit history as a factor when calculating insurance rates. An excellent credit score is considered anything above 720, and the higher your credit, the better chances you’ll have a lower insurance rate.

But it’s important to note that a lower credit score doesn’t always guarantee you’ll have higher insurance rates. It all depends on the insurer and how it weighs other factors like your age, driving history, and location.

Here are the average monthly quotes for Richmond based on your credit tier.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
