Michigan car insurance requirements

Michigan operates under a no-fault insurance system that requires all drivers to carry specific coverage types. The state’s minimum requirements include personal injury protection (PIP), property protection insurance (PPI), and residual bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage.[3]

For PIP coverage, the state separates medical expenses from other costs, such as wage loss and funeral and burial expenses. The default medical PIP coverage is unlimited, but you can choose a lower amount or even opt out entirely based on your health coverage.

That said, coverage for other PIP expenses isn’t adjustable.

PPI covers damage to fixed property like buildings and fences within Michigan, while property damage liability protects you in accidents outside the state. Michigan also requires minimum property damage liability coverage for damage you cause in other states.

The table below shows Michigan’s coverage requirements.

Minimum Coverage Limits

Medical personal injury protection$50,000 (can opt out with proper coverage)

Property damage liability (in other states)$10,000

Michigan car insurance quotes with bad credit

Michigan law restricts how insurance companies use your credit history when setting car insurance rates.[7]

More specifically, insurers can’t use credit information or insurance scores to deny, cancel, or refuse to renew policies. But insurers can use it to determine premium installment payment options and availability.

Michigan drivers with poor credit pay an average of $145 per month for liability-only coverage. In contrast, drivers with good credit pay an average of $109 per month for liability insurance.

Here’s a look at insurers with the lowest liability rates for Michigan drivers with poor credit.

The below rates in Michigan are estimated rates current as of: Sunday, April 5 at 5:00 PM PDT.

Michigan car insurance FAQs

  • Which company has the cheapest car insurance in Michigan?

In Michigan, USAA has the cheapest liability insurance, Insurify data shows, with monthly premiums averaging $67.

  • Is $100 per month normal for car insurance in Michigan?

It depends on where you live. At $179 per month, Michigan car insurance rates tend to be higher than the national average. Full coverage averages $226 per month, and a liability-only policy averages $132 per month.

  • What’s the lowest level of car insurance in Michigan?

In Michigan, the lowest level of car insurance coverage is $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury coverage, $10,000 for property damage in another state, and $1 million for property protection (PPI). Personal injury protection (PIP) defaults to unlimited coverage, although cheaper insurance options are available based on your health coverage.

  • Why is auto insurance so high in Michigan?

Michigan auto insurance is expensive due to the state’s high rate of uninsured drivers and its no-fault insurance system, which means your insurance pays for your medical expenses regardless of fault.

  • Can your credit score affect your car insurance in Michigan?

No. While insurers can consider your credit when deciding which payment options to offer, they can’t use your credit history to deny you coverage.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
