  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Illinois

Insurance companies use a variety of factors to determine car insurance premiums, ranging from age and driving history to the make and model of your vehicle. Understanding what influences your rate is the first step toward snagging the best deal.

Here are a few tips for finding cheap car insurance in Illinois:

  • Bundle policies. Many insurance companies offer discounts if you bundle your auto insurance with other policies, such as homeowners, renters, or life insurance.

  • Drive a safe and affordable vehicle. High-end vehicles, sports cars, and cars with poor safety ratings typically cost more to insure.

  • Keep a clean driving record. Insurers often reward safe drivers who avoid accidents and traffic violations with lower rates and discounts.

  • Compare quotes. Don’t settle for the first quote you get. Insurance companies focus on different rating factors and offer varying discounts, so it’s worth it to get multiple quotes and compare your options.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Illinois: Auto-Owners

Liability-only car insurance is a type of policy that covers damages you cause to other people and their property in an accident. It’s the most basic form of auto insurance and the minimum coverage required to operate a vehicle in most states.

Liability-only insurance costs an average of $79 per month in Illinois.

For Illinois residents seeking cheap liability-only car insurance, the table below provides several companies offering the lowest rates.

10 Cheapest Liability-Only Insurers

Disclaimer: Table data sourced from real-time quotes from Insurify's 50-plus partner insurance providers. Actual quotes may vary based on the policy buyer's unique driver profile.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Illinois: Auto-Owners

Full-coverage car insurance offers broader coverage than liability-only car insurance. In addition to bodily injury and property damage liability, it includes collision coverage, which pays for damage to your car resulting from a collision, and comprehensive coverage, which pays for damage to your car from non-collision-related events, such as theft, vandalism, and natural disasters.

While liability-only car insurance is less expensive than full-coverage car insurance, full coverage is ideal for:

  • Drivers with newer or more valuable vehicles where repair and replacement costs would be high

  • Drivers with auto loans or leases, as lenders typically require full coverage

  • Drivers who want peace of mind knowing they’re covered for a broader range of incidents

Illinois drivers pay $174 per month, on average, for full-coverage policies. For drivers who want full coverage, here’s a look at some top companies offering competitive rates.

ILAIP

Illinois drivers who can’t find auto insurance elsewhere due to their driving record or the type of vehicle they own may be able to find coverage through the Illinois Auto Insurance Plan (ILAIP).

To participate in the program, Illinois residents must show that they’ve tried and failed to obtain automobile insurance through traditional means within the past 60 days and have a valid driver’s license and a safe vehicle.[3]

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

An incident in the context of car insurance refers to at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, driving under the influence (DUI), and other moving violations that indicate a potential risk to insurance companies.

Insurance companies base rates on risk, and drivers with more incidents on their record are statistically more likely to be involved in future accidents and have claims. Therefore, if you have incidents on your driving record, you’ll likely pay more for car insurance than drivers with clean records.

But some insurers still offer favorable rates to drivers with imperfect records.

Illinois drivers with a past speeding ticket pay an average of $177 per month for car insurance. The table below shows the cheapest car insurance companies for Illinois drivers with a speeding ticket.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: Auto-Owners

Being involved in a car accident can be a distressing experience. When you’re deemed to be “at fault” for the accident, it implies you were primarily responsible. That can affect your car insurance premiums because it signals to insurance companies that you engaged in behavior — intentionally or not — that resulted in a claim.

Insurance companies anticipate future risks based on past events, so an at-fault accident can lead them to increase your premiums to account for potential future claims.

On average, Illinois drivers with a past at-fault accident pay $194 per month for auto coverage. The following table shows the cheapest car insurance companies for Illinois drivers with an at-fault accident on their driving record.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a DUI: Auto-Owners

Driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs is a serious offense and can lead to a substantial increase in your car insurance rates. A DUI indicates high-risk behavior to insurance companies, so having one on your record can affect your insurance rates for several years.

Illinois car insurance quotes by credit tier

In many states, including Illinois, insurance companies consider your credit history when determining your car insurance premiums.[4]

Drivers with excellent or good credit generally file fewer claims, so they pay lower premiums. People with poor credit are statistically more likely to file claims, so insurance companies charge them higher premiums.

For Illinois residents wondering how credit tiers affect their monthly premiums, here’s a snapshot of average rates at different credit tiers.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
