Drivers in the Pelican State pay about $241 per month, on average, for full-coverage car insurance and around $130 for liability-only coverage.
Louisiana has some of the most expensive car insurance costs in the country. The state’s risk of damage from extreme weather contributes to its higher insurance costs. Weather-related disasters cost the state about $6.9 billion per year, according to data from the National Centers for Environmental Information.
Louisiana drivers pay an average of $2,896 per year for full-coverage car insurance.
Louisiana requires all drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability car insurance — but nearly 12% of state drivers are uninsured, according to data from the Insurance Research Council.
Because Louisiana is a pure comparative fault state, drivers can collect financial compensation even if they partially caused the car accident.

Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.
We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.
Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 55,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

My Experience with State Farm
Beware, some companies are more interested in making money than meeting the customers' needs. My wife had a medical issue while driving, and they covered it. A year later, there was a fender bender involving two moving vehicles. To me, it was no fault, but they considered it a second incident. We also had hail damage to our roof. They said there wasn't enough damage, yet my next-door neighbors received a new one. Now, they're canceling me for too much.

Why we picked this company
Allstate offers numerous ways for drivers to customize their coverages, including adding a rideshare insurance policy if you drive for Uber, Lyft or another rideshare company. Louisiana doesn’t require rideshare drivers to purchase rideshare insurance, but personal auto insurance policies without an endorsement won’t cover damages that occur while you’re driving passengers.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Louisiana
Getting cheap car insurance in Louisiana can be tricky, considering the average premium is nearly 50% higher than the national average, but it’s possible. When setting rates, insurers evaluate your driving record, coverage needs, age, ZIP code, vehicle type, and other factors.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance suggests these tips to help you find a policy that fits your budget:
Shop around. Get multiple insurance quotes to find the best deal.
Raise your deductible. Choosing a higher deductible can lower your premium.
Apply for discounts. Save money with discounts, such as those offered to good students or safe drivers.
Bundle benefits. Bundle your car insurance with other policies, like home or renters insurance, for potential savings.
Drive safely. Maintain a clean driving record to get the cheapest rates.

Car insurance requirements in Louisiana
Louisiana is a pure comparative fault state.[1] This means you can collect financial compensation even if you were partly responsible for a car accident. The law helps ensure you have coverage if you make a mistake behind the wheel. But drivers usually have a one-year time limit on filing a lawsuit after an accident.
“Insurers pay up to twice the amount in claim payments for bodily injury claims and property damage claims in Louisiana than they do in most of the rest of the country,” says John Ford, deputy commissioner of public affairs for the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
Below are Louisiana’s minimum liability car insurance requirements:
Though Louisiana doesn’t require these coverages, they can offer extra, useful protection for you and your vehicle.
Collision and comprehensive
Collision and comprehensive coverages are part of full-coverage car insurance. Collision insurance can pay for damages from an at-fault accident with other vehicles, as well as collisions with objects like trees, fences, and light poles. It can also cover damage from rollover accidents. Comprehensive pays for damages caused by non-collision events, such as theft, fire, flood, or severe weather.
Medical payments coverage
If you get into an accident, medical payments coverage takes care of your medical expenses, regardless of who’s at fault.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance covers you when another driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough coverage. Louisiana requires all insurance companies to offer this coverage, but drivers can decline to purchase it.
Roadside assistance
If you find yourself stuck on the side of the road, roadside assistance coverage can pay to tow your vehicle to a repair shop or another location.
Full coverage
Full coverage typically includes collision and comprehensive insurance to cover repairs or replacement after an accident, theft, fire, or other event.
Rideshare insurance
If you drive for a rideshare company, rideshare insurance fills coverage gaps left by your personal car insurance and the rideshare company’s insurance.[2]
Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident
An incident is an at-fault accident, speeding ticket, DUI/DWI, or another moving violation that can negatively affect your driving record and car insurance rates.
“At-fault accidents and violations are used in premium calculations because they are predictive of a driver’s risk level,” Ford says. A speeding ticket can raise rates more than $500 for liability insurance, while a DUI can add nearly $900 to your premiums.
“Each insurer treats incidents differently, but the overall frequency of incidents can raise premiums in a geographic area,” says Ford. “For example, cities with higher instances of auto theft would likely see higher premiums for comprehensive coverage relative to cities with lower instances of auto theft.”

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: State Farm
An at-fault accidentcan lead to higher rates — drivers in Louisiana with an at-fault accident pay a monthly average of $197 for liability-only insurance.
But you can still find ways to keep your rates low. Look for an insurance company that offers an accident forgiveness program or specializes in serving high-risk drivers. Another option is to shop around, since insurance quotes for Louisiana drivers with an at-fault accident can vary quite a bit among insurers.

Navigating car insurance after driving under the influence can feel overwhelming. You might want to look for an insurance company that offers a discount for completing a defensive driving course or practicing safe driving habits.

Cheapest car insurance for seniors: State Farm
Car insurance rates follow a pattern as people get older. After age 25, rates usually drop as drivers gain experience and become more responsible. But around age 70, premiums start to go up again. Most of Louisiana’s seniors face high car insurance costs, on average, highlighting the importance of finding reliable, affordable auto insurance options.
Senior drivers in Louisiana pay an overall monthly average of $146 for car insurance. Explore more options for senior drivers in the table below.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: State Farm
It’s no secret that getting car insurance as a teenager can be expensive. “Because teens have the least amount of driving experience and the highest rate of accidents of any demographic, they pay the highest average rates across the U.S.,” says Mark Friedlander, corporate communications director at the Insurance Information Institute.
A liability-only policy costs teen drivers in Louisiana $275 per month, on average, while full-coverage insurance is even more expensive, averaging $509 per month.
Teenage drivers pay significantly more for auto insurance than Louisiana’s average. But plenty of teen-focused discounts are available, including good student discounts and student away-at-school discounts, which are available if a college student in your household is attending and residing at a school more than 100 miles from home without a vehicle.
Teens can also save money by staying on their parents’ insurance policies, driving a safe car, choosing a higher deductible, or buying an inexpensive older vehicle to avoid needing to pay for collision and comprehensive coverage.

Louisiana car insurance FAQs
Finding the best car insurance in Louisiana can be challenging. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about car insurance in the Bayou State.
How much is car insurance in Louisiana?
The state average cost of car insurance in Louisiana is $186 per month. Drivers pay $130 per month for liability coverage and $241 per month for full coverage. Your average rates ultimately depend on your driving record, credit history, marital status, age, location, and more.
Which company has the cheapest car insurance in Louisiana?
The cheapest car insurance companies in Louisiana are State Farm, USAA, and National General. Their liability-only rates average $63, $79, and $95 per month, respectively. But the cheapest insurer for you will depend on multiple factors, including your age, ZIP code, type of car you drive, and chosen coverage levels.
How much car insurance do you need in Louisiana?
Louisiana requires drivers to carry $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage, as well as $25,000 per accident in property damage liability coverage. It’s a good idea to purchase a coverage amount beyond the state requirements for more vehicle protection.
Is Louisiana a no-fault state?
No. Louisiana is a pure comparative fault state, meaning drivers can collect financial compensation even if they were partly responsible for an accident.
Methodology
Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).
Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:
Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
