Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Salt Lake City

Liability-only car insurance offers basic coverage for the other person’s vehicle and their medical expenses after an accident. Due to this limited coverage, liability insurance tends to be cheaper. It won’t pay for any of your own medical bills or car damages.

Liability insurance may be a good fit if you drive an older car that’s paid off and can afford to pay for your own vehicle repairs out of pocket. Or, if you’re just looking to start with basic insurance coverage and lock in a low price, this option may be worth considering.

Salt Lake City residents pay an average monthly rate of $106 for liability-only car insurance. Here are some of the cheapest liability-only car insurance rates in Salt Lake City.

Utah insurance programs

The state of Utah works with automobile liability insurance verification company Insure-Rite to partner with the state’s DMV to help keep uninsured drivers off the road. Insure-Rite collects insurance policy information from Utah’s insurance companies and compares it to the database of vehicles registered in the state.

For example: Suppose a registered vehicle is found not to have insurance coverage, and the vehicle owner can’t present proof of insurance. In that case, Insure-Rite notifies the DMV, which revokes the registration for that car. It’s crucial to obtain car insurance for your vehicle and maintain coverage at all times.[2]

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Incidents, like at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, and DUIs, can go on your driving record and affect your car insurance rates. Insurers consider drivers with these incidents on their driving record to be riskier than other drivers and charge higher rates to make up for the increased risk.

It’s important to shop around for quotes and inquire about discounts to ensure you’re getting the best price.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Salt Lake City

Getting the cheapest car insurance in Salt Lake City will depend on factors like your age, ZIP code, driving history, and type of coverage. Here are a few hands-on ways to lower your car insurance costs:

  • Keep a clean driving record. If you have a history of accidents, traffic violations, or DUIs, your insurance premiums will be higher, so it’s essential to be a safe and responsible driver. To keep a clean driving record, follow traffic rules, avoid distractions while driving, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles on the road.

  • Check insurance costs when buying a car. Insurance costs vary depending on the car’s model, year, safety features, and other factors. For instance, sports cars may generally be more expensive to insure than family sedans. Research and compare insurance quotes for similar models before buying a car.

  • Ask about discounts. Most car insurance companies offer several discounts you can take advantage of — ask your insurer or insurance agent which you qualify for.

  • Shop around. Shopping around to compare insurance quotes is one of the simplest ways of getting the cheapest car insurance rates. Different insurers may offer different rates, discounts, and coverage options, so it’s important to get quotes from multiple insurers and compare them before making a decision. You can get help from an agent or consider using online tools to help you compare insurance options.

Salt Lake City car insurance quotes by credit tier

In Utah, car insurance companies can use your credit score as a factor when determining your car insurance rates. After you’ve been insured with a company for at least 60 days, however, the insurer can’t use your credit information to cancel or refuse to renew your insurance policy.[6]

Nevertheless, it can be helpful to maintain a good credit score to increase the chances of getting an affordable car insurance policy. Drivers with excellent credit scores typically pay less than drivers with bad credit scores.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
