In Parkersburg, West Virginia, residents generally pay about $112 per month for car insurance. This is slightly less than the national average of $142. This more affordable rate is likely due to Parkersburg’s mostly rural setting and the low number of uninsured drivers.[1] Additionally, the Parkersburg Police Department noted fewer reported crimes in 2023 than in 2022, further reducing insurance costs.[2]

However, while costs are already lower in Parkersburg, you can reduce your insurance costs even more. Here’s how.

Quick Facts
  • State Farm offers the cheapest liability coverage in Parkersburg, at $42 per month.

  • West Virginia allows insurers to review your credit history when setting rates during the underwriting process.

  • West Virginia has a two-year lawsuit deadline and a modified comparative fault rule.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 55,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

When my wife had an accident, which was completely unexpected, the insurance company took their time to pick up the vehicle from the tow yard and take it to the shop for assessment. It took a total of a month before they claimed it as totaled. I was $6,000 in the hole, and mind you, the car was maybe a year old, practically new. Thank God I had gap insurance.

Avoid USAA at all costs even if you think you will save, you will not.
USAA is too costly, changes policy without consent, and is a nightmare to deal with on claims. Our last claim, they offered us a final offer of exactly half what our vehicle was worth. We had to hire an independent appraiser, they wouldn’t honor his appraisal, then we had to pay for a mediator to get even near what the vehicle was worth. Our own insurance company fought us at every turn for what our vehicle was obviously worth. The policy has gone up more than 4 times our initial quote. I don’t know why we stuck with them for so long. Quotes from other companies put our 6-month price less than 1 month of USAA’s prices. We are dumping them as soon as possible. It isn’t the same USAA it was 20 years ago. We have good credit and clean driving records. The last thing we want after being in an accident is to have to fight with our own provider that we were paying top dollar for. Our payout finally came after 1 year of dealing with them, hiring our own appraisal, and paying for mediation. My only advice is if you use USAA and get into an accident, immediately hire an attorney to deal with it all for you; otherwise, stay away from this company at all costs. They are not worth the high premiums they charge.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Parkersburg

To get affordable premiums on car insurance in Parkersburg, it’s crucial to understand the factors that influence rates. Insurers look at your driving history, vehicle type, coverage amount, and personal information like age, gender, marital status, and ZIP code.

Here are a few strategies to help you find the cheapest car insurance year after year:

  • Compare insurance quotes from different companies. Looking at different rates will help you get the best deal.

  • Ask about discounts. Insurers can offer different discounts, including savings for new customers. Asking may help you find a discount you didn’t know existed.

  • Keep your credit score high. Auto insurers can review your credit history when determining your quote. A higher credit score can often lead to lower rates.

  • Maintain a clean driving record. A driving record free of violations can qualify you for lower car insurance rates.

Car insurance requirements in West Virginia

If you’re in a traffic accident, you need to know what the state requires. First, understand that West Virginia has a two-year deadline for filing car accident lawsuits.[5] West Virginia drivers must also be aware of the “modified comparative fault” rule. This means you can only get financial compensation if you’re less responsible for the accident than the other person involved.

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) uses a real-time program to verify insurance at vehicle registration, during traffic incidents, and monthly for all registered vehicles.[6] Your policy must have uninsured motorist coverage and meet the minimum insurance coverage levels below:

Coverage
sort ascsort desc
Minimum Requirements
sort ascsort desc
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000
Uninsured motorist bodily injury$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Uninsured motorist property damage$25,000

While the table above provides insight into your minimum requirements, you can obtain coverage that exceeds these limits. If you’re looking for additional insurance protection, you may want to consider the following optional coverages:

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Drivers who have incidents like at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, driving under the influence, or other traffic violations on their driving record can expect higher car insurance rates. Insurance companies assess your driving history when setting rates. Incidents on your record can label you as a high-risk driver, implying you’re more likely to have a future accident or claim.

The average rate for liability-only car insurance with an at-fault accident on your record in Parkersburg is $94 per month. Drivers with a speeding ticket can expect to pay about $97 per month, and rates climb to $96 if you have a DUI on your record.

In the table below, you can see how quotes from top insurers fluctuate based on your driving record.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
