It offers crisp online content and bilingual services, but looks aren’t everything when it comes to this cheap, high-risk auto insurance company

Who Benefits Most and Least from Safe Auto Insurance?

Best For…

  • Spanish speakers requiring bilingual services
  • Drivers who live in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia
  • People looking for a cheap, high-risk, no-frills insurance provider

Not the Best For…

  • Callers who expect stellar customer service 100 percent of the time
  • Anyone outside of Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia
  • People who want concierge-like, high-end car insurance services

Safe Auto: Says all the right things, but behind the scenes, this company can be a little glitchy.

This insurance company has a bit of an identity crisis on its hands. This can be typical of a company who’s front end smells like roses, but its back end, well…doesn’t live up to the expectations its website sets.

Though it’s only available in 17 states and not all products are available in all states (SR-22, for example), Safe Auto is certainly is lauded as a cheap option. And if money is the only expectation, this company could serve you well (especially if you are in the high-risk category). But there are tradeoffs for sure…namely its customer service and technology. In the end, this is a cheap insurance option for those who don’t care much about bells and whistles, including customer service and app capability.

Safe Auto Car Insurance Quotes and Discounts

Safe-Auto’s “Only Pay for What You Need” tagline couldn’t be more correct these days. Before big data and artificial intelligence, you bought an insurance policy that was a “good enough” fit but probably included a little more than you needed. Now in just a few minutes, you can compare quotes and discounts customized to your individual situation. And that’s important considering the dollars and sense that finding exactly the right auto insurance company can save.

Drivers Can SAVE with these Discounts from Safe Auto

Safe Auto rewards its policyholders in a lot of ways—beginning with a discount for merely switching to its company! Their predominant discounts have to do with how well you drive (good driver discount, defensive driver discounts) and how interested you are at working to be even safer on the road (driver improvement course discount).

Safe auto also gives additional discounts to people with multiple vehicles, those who switch over from another company, drivers who pay for their policy in full, and homeowners.

States Where Safe Auto Car Insurance is Offered

You can get a Safe Auto quote for coverage in any of these 17 states: Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

An interesting twist: If when getting a quote online, you enter a ZIP code outside of these 17 states, Safe Auto will suggest several “partner” insurance providers that you can choose to look over instead. Since you don’t have to enter anything but a ZIP code, we’ll assume that this doesn’t mean that these insurers can give you comparable quotes…but that they are at least considered peers and similar in offerings. For example, entering a ZIP code outside of their coverage states (83616) returns these options:

Kudos to them for being helpful, right? However, you’ll still have to do some research to see if these companies fit your individual needs.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Safe Auto Insurance

  • SR-22 Insurance: Carrying SR-22 insurance is court-ordered. It is a certificate of proof that you are indeed carrying the minimum insurance required by law. Reasons the court orders SR-22 insurance include being at fault in an accident without having the minimum coverage your state requires, DUI and DWI convictions, multiple moving violations, etc. Not all insurance companies offer SR-22 insurance. Note: Safe Auto may not offer SR-22 insurance in every state in which it offers insurance coverage
  • High-Risk Coverage: This category of insurance is offered to drivers who fall into a high-risk category as determined by driving history and even the type of vehicle they drive. At-fault accidents, speeding tickets, reckless driving, DUIs, and other driving history dings can throw you into a high-risk coverage category.
  • Mechanical Repair Vehicle Service Plan (“ForeverCar”): You can get a quote online or call 1 (877) 715-9638.
  • Commercial Auto: Safe Auto has partnered with Progressive to insure a variety of commercial vehicles. You can get a quote online or call 1 (877)843-2475.
  • Motorcycle: You can enter your ZIP code to begin the online quotes process for insuring your motorcycle. If you are outside of their 17-state coverage area, they will refer you to partner insurers for a quote.

How Can I Buy Auto Insurance from Safe Auto?

Buying auto insurance from Safe Auto is strictly an online/over-the-phone operation.

According to the Safe Auto web site, you can get a quote in three minutes or less. That being said, be ready for a tedious three minutes. What’s your typing speed? How much information do you have on hand? How patient are you? Five pages in, I wanted to tear my hair out, but I mustered through to get a single quote.

(Imagine an interface that lets you compare multiple quotes online in a much easier, less intrusive and time-consuming way. That’s what you’ll get with Insurify.)

How Can I Pay for My Safe Auto Car Insurance Policy?

With a QuickPay option predominantly placed at the top of its home page, Safe Auto makes it easy to pay without even having to log into an account.

In total, there are four ways to pay your Safe Auto car insurance policy

  • Pay online via a one-time “QuickPay” or by creating an account and setting up automatic payments on your Visa, Discover, Mastercard, or debit card.
  • Pay using the Safe Auto mobile app
  • Phone in your payment by calling 1 (800) SAFEAUTO (1 (800) 723-3288). You can choose to speak to someone directly or follow the automatic payment prompts and pay without speaking to a soul.
  • Send your payment snail mail to:
    Safe Auto Insurance Company
    4 Easton Oval
    Columbus, Ohio 43219

According to the SafeAuto.com website, you can pay by personal check, cashier’s check, and several different types of money orders.

How Often Will Safe Auto Increase My Premiums

The quote you get online should be close to the premium you will pay—if you’ve been honest answering all of their questions. Your actual premium will be set after your driving record, and other details have been reviewed. As far as rate increases are concerned, any increases will happen after the six-month renewal period when they review your last six months driving record and claims details. Safe Auto doesn’t have an accident forgiveness program, so don’t count on them, giving you grace as far as a “first accident” is concerned.

How Does Safe Auto’s Claims Process Work?

Safe Auto does an excellent job of explaining the claims process online by giving just the information you need at first, then allowing you to dive deeper into the topic. We’ve summarized the basics of Safe Auto’s Claims Process below. If you have more questions about the claims process (though the process is the same, every claim is a little bit different), you can certainly call them at 1 (800) 723-3288 or email claims@safeauto.com.

First Notice of Loss

First, to begin a claim, call 1 (800) 723-3288 to report it. This is referred to in Safe Auto terms as the First Notice of Loss (FNOL) Be sure to have the following information on hand when reporting your claim:

  • Date, time, and location of the accident
  • Year, make, and model of the involved vehicles
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of all associated drivers and passengers including information about anyone who is injured
  • Insurance information of the other parties involved (as much as you can get)
  • A description of the accident including how it occurred

Safe Auto’s “Report a Claim” page also has some useful advice in dealing with filing the claim with the police and the other party’s company.

After you’ve made a claim, the claim moves into “Investigation” mode.

Investigation
In this phase, Safe Auto deploys an adjuster to investigate the facts of the claim. They do this by looking through any police reports (that’s why it’s essential to file one), talking to anyone and everyone involved in the accident, and conversing with field adjusters and appraisers. All of this is done to be sure they have an excellent understanding of fault, injury, and damage.

Resolution
Finally. When is this thing gonna get done? “Resolution” means we are that much closer to getting this thing over with and back on the road, right? Yes, but…a resolution could mean a lot of different things, so depending on the exact outcome, you could be waiting anywhere from a few weeks to a month or even a year (if it goes to litigation). Here are the different ways things could go down in the end:

  1. Your car is repaired. In this case, Safe Auto allows you to repair your vehicle at the shop of your choice.
  2. Your car is deemed a total loss. Ouch! If this happens, Safe Auto pays you the fair market value of your vehicle less any deductibles that might apply. Now you’ve got to find a new ride.
  3. You get a check in the mail. Resolution could include a payment to you, depending on the way your policy is written.
  4. Your case goes to court. You’ll likely be contacted by an outside party, not Safe Auto, if your case moves to litigation. If this is the case, you’ll provide Safe Auto with any communication you receive, and they’ll help lead you through the litigation process from there.

How long will this all take? Well, that’s the million-dollar question, and really relies on how extensive the accident (injury claims are scrutinized carefully to protect companies against fraud) and the state you’re in. In California, for instance, the insurance company must refute the claim or offer a settlement within 40 days of receiving a proof of claim).

How Can I Cancel My Safe Auto Car Insurance Policy?

You can cancel your car insurance at any time but, depending on the policy, you may be hit with early cancellation fees. If you want to cancel your Safe Auto policy before the 6-month renewal date, you’ll be looking at a $25 cancellation fee and are required to send a letter requesting that your policy be canceled. Even if you find a killer rate at another insurance provider, don’t ever jump the gun and cancel your current policy before your new policy has been established, or you’ll suffer a lapse in coverage. Not a good time to have an accident, for sure! If you aren’t ready to switch but want to change your coverage with Safe Auto, you can do that at any time, even before your renewal date.

Believe it or not, you can compare hundreds of insurance companies in seconds by visiting Insurify.

How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with Safe Auto?

Safe Auto doesn’t offer rideshare insurance at this time. This type of insurance is aimed at covering rideshare drivers in the period between opening up a rideshare app and accepting a passenger. Generally, neither your personal auto insurance nor your rideshare company’s insurance covers you for this period.

Safe Auto Customer Satisfaction and Policyholder Reviews

Based on one survey, Safe Auto only earned 1.5 stars out of 135 reviews. That doesn’t speak well for the company (even if they have a nice website), and you might want to dig deeper to understand why they are rated so poorly. The most common complaints have to do with customer service and their lack of civility. Positive reviews pointed out how comparably cheap this insurance provider is. In the case of Safe Auto (based on these consumeraffairs.com reviews) the familiar saying “You get what you pay for” seems appropriate:

Safe Auto Mobile App Review

The Safe Auto mobile app can be used as a point of payment or to review policy details. Because you can store your debit or credit card information in your account, Safe Auto’s app boasts “One-tap payment” which, for mobile users on-the-go, is a pretty attractive option. You can also view your policy details and access your insurance ID card from the app

From the screenshots, it looks like you can also make a claim from the app (though not much is said about how this claim process will progress once you click).

Available for both iPhone and Android devices, the Safe Auto mobile app scores a 1.9 out of 5 reviews on the App store. Here are just a few (not so nice) things iPhone users had to say about the quality of the app itself:

The Safe Auto app gets a little higher rating on Google Play for Android users, at 2.7 out of a healthy 729 reviews—still, the highest reviews praise the low prices, while the lower reviews speak to the quality of the app itself:
