States where Liberty Mutual Car Insurance is Offered

Liberty Mutual auto insurance is available in all 50 states.

Insurance minimums and coverage vary in every state, so you should look up the specific Liberty Mutual policies offered in yours. Click here to find the cheapest car insurance quotes in your state.

Liberty Mutual Insurance Coverages

Liberty Mutual offers policyholders the following coverages as part of their ‘standard’ coverage.

Liability Coverage

Liberty Mutual offers customers property damage and bodily injury liability, which are mandatory in most states. These cover you if you’re at fault in a car accident and need to pay for medical bills and property damage sustained by the other driver. So if you were to be at fault in a car accident with another car, Liberty Mutual would pay for the damages to that other car. If you were to crash into someone’s fence or mailbox, Liberty Mutual would pay for that, too.

Medical Payments Coverage

If you’re involved in an accident, Liberty Mutual’s medical payments coverage will cover your medical expenses, legal fees, and any emotional distress the accident caused you. If you missed a couple of days’ work because you were recovering from the accident, Liberty Mutual would compensate you for those lost wages. It will also cover bereavement costs—costs associated with losing a loved one if the accident was fatal.

Personal Injury Protection Coverage

Liberty Mutual offers Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage as your state requires. Some states require more coverage than others. If you wish to add more PIP to your insurance, that can be purchased separately as an add-on. PIP covers your medical payments in the long-term aftermath of your accident, not just the immediate aftermath. This means if you or your family members sustained injuries that require regular hospital visits and rehabilitation, PIP would cover those costs. Again, the level of coverage Liberty Mutual will provide you depends on state laws. Check to make sure you’re comfortable with the level of PIP coverage before purchasing your insurance plan.

The following are optional coverages that are available as add-ons to your standard Liberty Mutual policies:

Comprehensive Coverage

Liberty Mutual offers comprehensive insurance as an add-on to your standard coverage. This covers any damages to your vehicle caused by storms, floods, fires, vandalism, and theft.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage is also available as an add-on to your standard coverage. If your vehicle is damaged after contact with another vehicle or object like a guardrail or tree, Liberty Mutual will cover the cost of the damages.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Say you’re involved in an accident where the other driver is at fault but doesn’t have adequate insurance to cover the damage they caused you. Paying for the damage out-of-pocket would be unfair to you and a burden on your wallet. But if you purchase uninsured motorist coverage, Liberty Mutual will pay for your medical bills and vehicle damage. How much of the cost it will cover depends on the policy you purchased.

Towing and Labor Coverage and Roadside Assistance

Liberty Mutual offers 24/7 roadside assistance available as an add-on only after you purchase towing and labor coverage. If you opt for this, Liberty Mutual provides you with 24-hour roadside assistance if you’re stranded on the road because you ran out of fuel, locked your keys in the car, need your tire changed, need your battery revived, or need your vehicle towed to another place. The cost of fuel isn’t included in your coverage, and the distance for which Liberty Mutual will tow your car depends on your policy. Call 1 (800) 426-9898 to reach Liberty Mutual’s roadside assistance.

Better Car Replacement Coverage

If you’re in an accident and your vehicle is declared a total loss, Liberty Mutual will pay for a new car for you to use. The car can be one model year older with 15,000 fewer miles on it than your totaled car. This is an add-on to your standard coverage and may not be entirely necessary.

Original Parts Replacement

If your vehicle is damaged, Liberty Mutual will repair your car or pay for new car parts. This applies only to damage already covered by your policy and doesn’t apply to glass.

Employee Parking Guard Coverage

If you purchase this add-on, Liberty Mutual will cover any damages your car incurs while it’s in your workplace parking lot.

Lifetime Repair Guarantee

If your car is damaged, Liberty Mutual will cover the cost of repairs for as long as you own your vehicle. But you must use an approved facility, and your policy must cover the damage.

Rental Car Reimbursement

Liberty Mutual will reimburse you for the cost of renting a car if you’re in an accident and your vehicle is undergoing repairs. But of course, it will only cover the costs if your policy covered the original accident.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Liberty Mutual Insurance

Right Track

If you’re a demonstrably safe driver, Liberty Mutual will give you up to a 30 percent discount on your premium. Right Track, a Liberty Mutual program, requires you to insert a telematics device in your car that can track certain driving behaviors. These include how quickly you accelerate, how hard you brake, and how many miles you drive on average. Safe drivers, as determined by the device, will then be eligible for cheaper auto insurance policies.

How to enroll in Right Track:

  1. Enroll in the program when you purchase your Liberty Mutual auto insurance policy
  2. Download the Right Track app, which will prompt Liberty Mutual to send you the telematics device
  3. Connect your vehicle to the device using the Right Track app
  4. Place the device behind your rearview mirror
  5. After driving for 90 days, Liberty Mutual will decide how much of a discount to give you

Accident Forgiveness

Liberty Mutual lets you purchase accident forgiveness as an add-on to your insurance coverage. If you are accident- and violation-free for five years, you can apply for this coverage. If you buy this coverage, your premium price won’t increase, as it typically does if you get into an accident.

Vanishing Deductible

You can contribute up to $100 annually towards your collision deductible. A collision deductible is how much money you have to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance policy kicks in. If you enroll in Liberty Mutual’s deductible fund, you only pay $30 a year, which goes towards the fund, while Liberty Mutual puts $70 towards the fund. After a few years, your deductible fund will have enough money to cover your deductible if you’re ever in a collision accident.

Other Insurance Products Offered by Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual offers a myriad of insurance products aside from auto insurance. You should always consider bundling home and auto insurance or other insurance products like life insurance, and renters insurance, to get a better deal from insurance companies.

Home Insurance
Dwelling protection, personal possession protection, liability coverage, and additional living expenses are standard coverages provided by Liberty Mutual’s home insurance. You can also add insurance coverage for valuables, water pump and sump pump overflow, and inflation protection.

Renters Insurance
While purchasing renters insurance, Liberty Mutual will provide personal property coverage, liability coverage, additional living expenses, and medical payments coverage. You can buy personal property replacement, blanket jewelry coverage for engagement and wedding rings, identity theft protection, and earthquake coverage.

Life Insurance
Liberty Mutual offers term life insurance, whole life insurance, and fixed annuities like premium deferred annuity.

Motorcycle Insurance
Liberty Mutual’s motorcycle insurance coverage is quite similar to its auto insurance plans. Standard coverage includes collision, comprehensive, liability, and new bike placement coverage. Better bike replacement, accessory coverage, and 24/7 roadside assistance are offered as add-ons.

How often will Liberty Mutual increase my premiums?

If you get into an accident…
Even safe drivers can get into unfortunate situations, and most of the time, getting a ticket or a violation on your record can lead to premium increases. At Liberty Mutual, you can apply for accident forgiveness coverage if you have a clean driving record for at least five years. If you have this coverage, your premium won’t increase if you have an accident. However, if you get into an accident and don’t have accident forgiveness, your premium will most probably increase — even if you weren’t at fault.

If you’re a loyal customer…
Many policyholders also complained of price hikes even though they had stayed on their Liberty Mutual plans for a long time and maintained clean driving records. In some cases, customers complained that their premiums had doubled in one year even though they had been on the same plan for a long time.

If you file a claim…
The number of claims you file will also impact your Liberty Mutual rates. If you file a claim, even for an accident where you weren’t at fault, your Liberty Mutual rate will probably increase.

How does Liberty Mutual’s claims process work?

J.D. Power & Associates rates Liberty Mutual’s claims satisfaction as “average.”

You can file a claim online by logging into your Liberty Mutual account online or through the app. You can also call 1 (800) 2CLAIMS if you would rather speak to a representative. Once you’ve filed a claim, you can manage and track its progress online or through the app.

How can I cancel my policy with Liberty Mutual?

You can call a Liberty Mutual representative at 1 (800) 658-9857 to cancel your policy.

Cancellation fees vary by state and policy, but you should consider canceling your policy at the end of the policy period to avoid fees. Make sure you already have another insurance policy lined up for your car so there are no gaps in your insurance. You should hold off on canceling your plan until you have your proof of insurance letter. Use an insurance comparison website like Insurify to find and compare auto insurance quotes for free.

Insurance Companies Similar to Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual is largely a preferred insurance provider. This means if you’re a low-risk driver with a clean driving record, Liberty Mutual might give you a cheaper quote on your insurance. But if you’re under 25, have bad credit, or have a couple of tickets or violations on your driving record, Liberty Mutual might not be the best option for you. You might get a better quote from competitors, like Progressive and GEICO, that are more willing to insure high-risk drivers.

According to Insurify’s internal database of over 1.6 million car insurance applications and our analysis of external sources, drivers who now hold Liberty Mutual auto insurance often switched from the following companies:

  1. Progressive
  2. GEICO
  3. State Farm
  4. Allstate
  5. Farmers

We also found that people who previously held Liberty Mutual auto insurance often switched to the following companies:

  1. Progressive
  2. Mercury
  3. Elephant
  4. Bristol West
  5. Safeco

Liberty Mutual Car Insurance Customer Satisfaction and Policyholder Reviews

Customer reviews for Liberty Mutual are generally positive. Still, some reviewers take issue with the seemingly sudden premium increases regardless of whether or not policyholders had kept a clean driving record. Others criticized Liberty Mutual’s customer service, categorizing representatives as somewhat cold and inattentive.

But many reviewers are generally happy with Liberty Mutual’s coverage and say they’ve secured many discounts for being safe drivers and installing Right Track. Many even said they had positive experiences with Liberty Mutual’s customer service.

Liberty Mutual’s Right Track program has garnered a lot of attention since it was first launched in 2016. Many reviewers said they had a lot of trouble signing up for the program, and complained their sensors didn’t arrive in working condition. Once enrolled, some drivers felt the sensors didn’t correctly register driving habits and reported brakes and acceleration where none existed.

However, others felt the program and app worked very efficiently and made them more aware of bad driving habits. Many said they were delighted with their final discount.

Liberty Mutual Mobile App Review

Liberty Mutual’s app is highly rated on both the Google and Apple app stores, fetching scores of 4.6 and 4.8, respectively. The app comes fully equipped with resources like roadside assistance tips, claims filing, and readily available insurance ID cards. The only complaints had less to do with effectiveness and more to do with the app not storing login credentials after software updates.

Some customers have taken issue with Liberty Mutual’s Right Track app. Reviewers have complained about the difficulty of signing up for the program and connecting the telematics device to the app. Some said the app continually froze, while others complained that the sensors worked incorrectly.

Does Liberty Mutual have good insurance?

Liberty Mutual is a good option for car insurance if you're a good driver looking for a discount, or if you're looking for benefits like vanishing deductibles, accident forgiveness, and telematics device discounts by using Right Track. It might not be a good option if you're looking for an insurance company with excellent customer service or the fastest claims process.

Does Liberty Mutual have the cheapest insurance?

This depends on several factors. Sometimes the cheapest insurance isn't necessarily the best choice for you. That's why you shouldn't just compare insurance prices, but also insurance policies. Liberty Mutual may not necessarily be the cheapest option, but it might be the best coverage option. Either way, it's always good to use quote comparison websites like Insurify to make sure you're getting the best policy for the best price.

Where can I find the cheapest insurance?

Shop around for insurance with an auto insurance quotes comparison site like Insurify to have a look at all the cheapest car insurance quotes and discounts for which you may be eligible.

This can be time-consuming, but Insurify helps you compare auto insurance quotes in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is put in some basic information about your driving profile, and you can compare up to 20 free quotes at once!

Liberty Mutual Auto Insurance Overview

Founded in 1912, The Liberty Mutual Group is one of America’s oldest mutual insurance companies. Initially formed in Massachusetts to provide workers compensation insurance, Liberty Mutual now runs the gamut of insurance products, including auto insurance, life insurance, home insurance, and umbrella policies.

Liberty Mutual is now the third-largest property and casualty insurer in the United States. It has built a clientele not just across the U.S., but also in Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Its headquarters are in Boston, Massachusetts, and the current CEO is David H. Long.

As a mutual insurance company, Liberty Mutual’s policyholders own part of the company. This also means policyholders are entitled to excess premiums that Liberty Mutual may return to them in the form of lower premiums or dividends. However, Liberty Mutual does not consistently pay dividends to its policyholders.
