Who Benefits Most and Least from Grange Insurance?

Best For…

  •  People who prefer working with a local insurance agent
  •  Customers who want to get lots of different types of insurance from one company
  • Small business owners and solopreneurs who need commercial or business liability coverage

Not the Best For…

  •  Customers who live outside the 13 states serviced by Grange Insurance
  • Drivers looking for the best rates in the industry

Grange Insurance: Ease of Doing Business

In 1999 Grange unveiled a new concept: Ease of Doing Business, which is used to “describe Grange’s hassle-free approach to insurance.” The company focuses on providing support and service for its policyholders, which does result in slightly higher premiums.

Grange has good customer service ratings compared to its peers. While the company doesn’t have bad customer service, it doesn’t provide exceptional service, either. Most customer complaints focus on customer service issues and a tendency for rates to creep upwards (or sprint upwards) over time. Older reviews are generally far more positive about customer service, so it looks like the company’s service may have slipped over the last year or two.

Quality of service can also vary quite a bit depending on which independent agent you work with. Look up your local office with a search like “Grange Insurance Ohio” to see what other customers have to say about its service.

Grange Auto Insurance Coverages

Grange offers policyholders the following types of insurance as part of its “standard” car insurance coverage.

Liability coverage
Grange offers customers both property damage and bodily injury liability, which are mandatory in most states. These cover you if you’re at fault in a car accident and need to pay for medical bills and property damage sustained by the other driver. For example, if you were at fault in a car accident with another car, Grange would pay for the damages to that other car. If you were to crash into someone’s fence or mailbox, Grange would pay for that, too.

Comprehensive and collision coverage
These types of car insurance coverage pay for damage to your vehicle, whether the damage is your fault or someone else’s. Collision coverage pays for damage that occurs when your vehicle hits something else (be it another car or something like a tree). Comprehensive coverage is for any type of covered damage that’s not the result of a collision: for example, if your vehicle is stolen or vandalized.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
What happens if you’re in an accident that’s someone else’s fault, but that person doesn’t have enough insurance coverage to pay for your vehicle repairs or medical expenses? In that case, Grange’s uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can help. If you’re hit by someone who has no insurance coverage or are the victim of a hit-and-run, uninsured motorist coverage would apply. Underinsured motorist coverage, not surprisingly, is for accidents where the at-fault driver has some insurance coverage, but not enough to pay for all the expenses. Some states require this coverage on your auto insurance policy, while others consider it optional.

Medical Payments coverage
If you’re involved in an accident, Grange’s medical payments coverage will help pay your medical expenses, legal fees, and any emotional distress the accident caused you. Medical payments coverage is not intended as a replacement for health insurance, but it can complement your existing health insurance coverage. For one thing, your health insurance will help with your medical costs from an accident but it won’t do a thing for your passengers, whereas your medical payments coverage extends to everyone in your vehicle.

Personal Injury Protection coverage
Grange offers Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage as your state requires. If you’re a resident of a no-fault accident state, you’re required to have either medical payments coverage or PIP coverage. PIP covers your medical payments in the long-term aftermath of your accident, not just the immediate aftermath. This means if you or your family members sustained injuries that require regular hospital visits and rehabilitation, PIP will cover those costs. PIP tends to cover more expenses than medical payments coverage does, but unlike medical payments coverage, you’ll have a deductible to meet. Check to make sure you’re comfortable with the level of PIP coverage before purchasing your insurance policy.

The following are optional coverages that are available as add-ons to a standard Grange car insurance policy:

Roadside Assistance
Grange provides you with 24-hour roadside assistance if you’re stranded on the road because you ran out of fuel, locked your keys in the car, need your tire changed, need your battery revived, or need your vehicle towed to another place. Call 1 (866) 767-0150 or place a request using the mobile app for 24/7 assistance, assuming you’ve purchased this coverage option.

Rental car reimbursement
Grange will reimburse you for the cost of renting a car if you’re in an accident and your vehicle is undergoing repairs. But of course, it will only cover the costs if your policy covered the original accident.

Gap coverage
When you buy a new vehicle, its value drops as soon as you drive it off the dealership lot. That means you could end up owing more on your car loan than the car is actually worth…and if you total the car in an accident under those circumstances, you may end up owing the lender more than you get back from your auto insurance company. That’s where gap coverage can come in handy. If your vehicle is totaled, gap coverage pays you the difference between how much your car is worth and how much you owe on the lease or loan.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Grange Insurance

Full Glass Repair
If your windows or windshield are damaged, but not so severely that they need to be wholly replaced, glass repair coverage will take care of those costs—generally at a lower deductible than a standard comprehensive/collision claim.

Identity Theft
During a car break-in, a thief could get ahold of personal information that would let him steal your identity. In that situation, Grange’s identity theft coverage will help you by linking you up with a CyberScout fraud specialist.

Other specialized coverage
Grange offers quite a few types of specialized auto insurance add-ons. For example:

  • Pet injury coverage. If you’re in an accident while your pet is in the car, and your pet is injured during as a result, the pet injury coverage will help pay the resulting veterinary bills.
  • Mobile device. Covers the cost related to damage to your phone or tablet if the damage happens as part of an event covered by your auto insurance policy.
  • Original equipment manufacturer coverage. With this coverage, mechanics will only use parts from the vehicle’s manufacturer rather than substitutions from other manufacturers.

Other Insurance Products Offered by Grange Insurance

Home Insurance
Dwelling protection, personal possession protection, liability coverage, and loss of use coverage are standard inclusions for homeowners insurance policies provided by Grange. You can also tack on coverage for underground service line repairs, water backup coverage, equipment breakdown, and identity theft insurance.

Renters Insurance
If you rent rather than own your home, Grange can provide renters insurance that includes personal property coverage, liability coverage, loss of use coverage, and medical payments coverage. You can add optional coverage that includes underground service line repairs, cyber protection coverage (helps with restoring lost information after a cyber attack), high-value personal property coverage, and sewer/septic backup coverage.

Life Insurance
Grange offers term life insurance, whole life insurance, and universal life insurance. That last option is a permanent policy, like whole life, but lets you tap into the policy’s cash value for financial crises that happen in your lifetime.

Motorcycle Insurance
Grange’s motorcycle insurance coverage is quite similar to its auto insurance plans. Standard coverage includes collision, comprehensive, liability, and medical expense coverage. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and 24/7 roadside assistance are offered as add-ons.

Business Insurance
If you own a small business, even if it’s just a side business you’re running out of your home, business insurance may be a good idea. Business insurance protects you in case some disaster occurs to your business or business property, or you or your employees do something that gets you sued. For example, if you hire someone to make deliveries for you and that person is in an accident while making deliveries, you’d need commercial auto coverage to help cover the costs and may need business liability insurance if the accident results in damage to people or property. Grange business insurance includes an audit and risk assessment to help identify the level of coverage you’d need.

Umbrella Insurance
If you have substantial assets, the liability coverage levels provided by standard car insurance and other policies might not be enough to protect you. That’s where umbrella coverage can help. An umbrella insurance policy complements basic policies such as auto and home insurance. The umbrella coverage picks up where the basic policy’s liability coverage lets off, and can also protect against things not covered by the base policy.

How Often Will Grange Increase My Premiums?

If you get into an accident…
Even safe drivers can get into unfortunate situations, and most of the time, getting a ticket or a violation on your record will lead to premium increases. In fact, your auto insurance rates will most probably increase even if you weren’t at fault in the accident.

If you’re a loyal customer…
Many Grange policyholders complained of price hikes even though they had maintained clean driving records. It’s wise to compare rates with other insurance providers every time your policy is up for renewal, even if your rates with your existing insurer don’t change.

If you file a claim…
The number of claims you file will also impact your Grange premiums. If you file a claim, even for an accident where you weren’t at fault, your Grange rate will probably increase.

How Does Grange’s Claims Process Work?

You can file a claim online by logging into your Grange account online and following the prompts.

You can also call 1 (800) 445-3030 if you would rather speak to a representative.

Once you’ve filed a claim, you can manage and track its progress online by entering the claim number and policy number or call 1 (800) 686-0025 for updates.

How Can I Cancel My Grange Car Insurance Policy?

You can call your local agent or speak with a Grange Insurance representative at 1 (866) 550-9222 to cancel your policy.

Cancellation fees vary by state and policy, so you should consider canceling your policy at the end of the policy period to avoid such charges. Make sure you already have another insurance policy lined up for your car so there are no gaps in your insurance. You’ll also want to hold off on canceling your plan until you have your proof of insurance letter. How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with Grange Insurance?

Grange provides rideshare coverage for drivers for Uber, Lyft, and similar rideshare services.

Grange’s Ridesharing Gap coverage protects drivers for the period between opening the rideshare app and accepting a fare request. Like many insurance companies, Grange has designed this specific coverage to make up for the deficit (or “gap”) in rideshare protection automatically provided by Uber and Lyft. Grange’s coverage includes protection for medical payments, physical damage, and more; but is not available in all states.

Because the Ridesharing Gap coverage only operates for a brief window, it’s typically quite affordable—though specific costs will vary based on your driving history, location, credit score, and other factors.

Frequently Asked Questions: Grange Car Insurance

Does Grange have good insurance?

Grange Insurance is a good option for car insurance if you want both business and personal insurance policies from one source, if you prefer working with someone local to get and maintain your insurance, or if you plan to get multiple personal policies from Grange (that would qualify you for the multi-product discount). It might not be a good option if you're looking for an insurance company with the lowest possible rates or superb customer service (although the latter partly depends on the caliber of your local agent). Also, drivers who live outside the 13 states where Grange provides coverage will have to look elsewhere.

Is Grange the cheapest car insurance in your area?

Shop around for insurance with an auto insurance quotes comparison site like Insurify to have a look at all the cheapest car insurance quotes and discounts for which you may be eligible.

That’s why it’s essential to do your research and compare quotes among other insurance companies. This can be time-consuming, but Insurify helps you compare auto insurance quotes in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is put in some basic information about your driving profile, and you can compare up to 20 free quotes at once!

Grange Auto Insurance Overview

Grange Insurance was founded in 1935 to service Ohio State Grange members and originally offered only auto insurance. The insurer first began providing insurance to the general public in 1958 and began spreading beyond Ohio at around the same time.

In 1968 Grange Insurance began selling life insurance as well as auto insurance. The company continued to focus on expanding to new states and new insurance markets, adding home and business coverage options, and eventually reaching 13 states. By 1985 Grange Insurance had reached $500 million in total coverage, and in 2003 the company began earning more than $1 billion in premiums per year. Though Grange is still far from being the biggest insurance company in the US, it’s no longer a tiny provider either.

A.M. Best, a credit rating company that assesses the financial strength of insurance companies, gives Grange Insurance an “A,” denoting excellent financial health and ability to pay out claims.
