A relative newcomer to the insurance marketplace, Elephant Insurance started its U.S. operations roughly a decade ago as an offshoot of Admiral Group, a major U.K. insurer. The insurance company provides only auto insurance directly, but has partnered with other insurers to offer life insurance, homeowners insurance, and a handful of other insurance products.

Who Benefits Most and Least from Elephant Insurance?

Best For…

  • People with more than one vehicle
  • Customers who are comfortable with no local agents
  • Drivers with a clean driving history who are looking for the lowest rates, including cost-cutting features like accident forgiveness

Not the Best For…

  • Customers who live outside the six states serviced by Elephant
  • Drivers looking for the best customer service in the industry

Elephant: Joining the herd

Elephant chose that name for the company because it reflects something that’s “big, strong and built to last,” according to the company’s “About Us” page. The company also describes itself as “big enough to matter but small enough to care.” In reality, Elephant has an above-average number of customer complaints, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Elephant has an adequate customer service rating compared to its peers. While the company doesn’t have bad customer service, it doesn’t provide exceptional service, either. Most customer complaints focus on problems with claims payouts, errors in payment processing, and a tendency for rates to creep upwards (or sprint upwards) over time.

One area where Elephant shines is its rates. Because it’s a direct-to-customer insurer, Elephant has no need to pay insurance agent commissions, and it passes on at least some of those savings in the form of lower premiums. The company also has several nice discount programs, including accident forgiveness and diminishing deductible options.

Elephant Car Insurance Quotes and Discounts

You might think shopping for insurance means buying the cheapest option you can find, but if you’re not checking for auto policy discounts, you might not be saving as much as you think. Pick a policy with lots of available discounts, and a seemingly costly premium could end up being the best deal of the bunch.

Make sure you use Insurify when shopping for your car insurance policy—it makes sure you’re aware of any discounts for which you’re eligible and lets you compare quotes between several insurance companies!

Elephant Auto Insurance Coverages

Elephant offers policyholders the following types of insurance as part of its “standard” car insurance coverage.

Liability coverage
Elephant offers customers both property damage and bodily injury liability, which are mandatory in most states. These cover you if you’re at fault in a car accident and need to pay for medical bills and property damage sustained by the other driver. For example, if you were at fault in a car accident with another car, Elephant would pay for the damages to the other vehicle. If you were to crash into someone’s fence or mailbox, Elephant would pay for that, too.

Comprehensive and collision coverage
These types of car insurance coverage pay for damage to your vehicle, whether the damage is your fault or someone else’s. Collision coverage pays for damage that occurs when your vehicle hits something else (be it another car or something like a tree). Comprehensive coverage is for any type of covered damage that’s not the result of a collision: for example, if your vehicle is stolen or vandalized.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
What happens if you’re in an accident that’s someone else’s fault, but that person doesn’t have enough insurance coverage to pay for your vehicle repairs or medical expenses? In that case, Elephant’s uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can help. If you’re hit by someone who has no insurance coverage or you’re the victim of a hit-and-run, uninsured motorist coverage will apply. Underinsured motorist coverage, not surprisingly, is for accidents where the at-fault driver has some insurance coverage, but not enough to pay for all the expenses. Some states require this coverage on your auto insurance policy, while others consider it optional.

Medical Payments Coverage
If you’re involved in an accident, Elephant’s medical payments coverage will help pay your medical expenses, legal fees, and any emotional distress the accident caused you. Medical payments coverage is not intended as a replacement for health insurance, but it can complement your existing health insurance coverage. For one thing, your health insurance will help with your medical costs from an accident, but it won’t do a thing for your passengers, whereas your medical payments coverage extends to everyone in your vehicle.

Personal Injury Protection Coverage
Elephant offers Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage as your state requires. If you’re a resident of a no-fault accident state, you’re required to have either medical payments coverage or PIP coverage. PIP covers your medical payments in the long-term aftermath of your accident, not just the immediate aftermath. This means if you or your family members sustained injuries that require regular hospital visits and rehabilitation, PIP would cover those costs. PIP tends to cover more expenses than medical payments coverage does, but unlike medical payments coverage, you’ll have a deductible to meet. Check to make sure you’re comfortable with the level of PIP coverage before purchasing your insurance policy.

The following are optional coverages that are available as add-ons to a standard Elephant car insurance policy:

Roadside Assistance
Elephant offers a full-scale 24/7 roadside assistance package, provided by Urgent.ly, a company that offers perks like the ability to track your tow truck driver’s location in real time. The program provides you with 24-hour roadside assistance if you’re stranded on the road because you ran out of fuel, locked your keys in the car, need your tire changed, need your battery revived, or need your vehicle towed to another place. Call 1 (833) 442-8884 for 24/7 assistance, assuming you’ve purchased this coverage option.

Diminishing Deductible
If you get comprehensive and collision coverage, you can also grab the diminishing deductible add-on. This program immediately drops $100 off your deductible, then removes a further $100 for each year you remain accident-free (up to $500 total). If you do get in an accident, you won’t see your deductible drop that year, but you won’t lose your accumulated discount either. If you have more than one vehicle on your policy, diminishing deductible applies to all of them.

Gap coverage
When you buy a new vehicle, its value drops as soon as you drive it off the dealership lot. That means you could end up owing more on your car loan than the car is actually worth…and if you total the car in an accident under those circumstances, you may end up owing the lender more than you get back from your auto insurance company. That’s where gap coverage can come in handy. If your vehicle is totaled, gap coverage pays you the difference between how much your car is worth and how much you owe on the lease or loan.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Elephant Insurance

Accident Forgiveness
Once you’ve held an Elephant auto insurance policy for a while, you can tack on accident forgiveness to your policy. This add-on keeps your rates from soaring up the first time you have an accident even though it’s one where you’re at fault.

Legal Assistance Coverage
Elephant’s legal assistance coverage add-on will cover some or all of the attorney fees for dealing with traffic courts and other legal situations. The program gives you access to an attorney network provided by group legal services provider Legal Resources. If you need representation, you’ll be referred to a local attorney with experience in that type of legal issue. Note that the legal assistance coverage program only helps cover attorney fees, not other legal expenses such as court fees and fines.

Other Insurance Products Offered by Elephant Insurance

Elephant offers more than just auto insurance. See just how many insurance products you can bundle under a singular Elephant policy:

Home Insurance
Dwelling protection, personal possession protection, liability coverage, and loss of use coverage are standard inclusions for homeowners insurance policies. If you buy homeowners insurance through Elephant, you’ll automatically get replacement cost coverage as well, meaning you’ll be compensated based on the cost to fix the damage using comparable materials. This doesn’t always apply to certain roof damage claims, which may be settled on actual cash value instead. Elephant doesn’t underwrite its homeowners insurance policies; the actual provider is Homesite.

Renters Insurance
If you rent rather than own your home, Elephant can provide renters insurance that includes personal liability coverage, loss of use coverage, and replacement cost coverage. Elephant doesn’t underwrite its renters insurance policies; the actual provider is Homesite.

Life Insurance
Elephant offers just one type of life insurance: term life insurance. Unlike its auto insurance policies, which can be prepaid for the year, Elephant’s life insurance policies are always paid monthly.

Motorcycle Insurance
Elephant’s motorcycle insurance coverage is quite similar to its auto insurance plans. Standard coverage includes collision, comprehensive, liability, and accessory coverage (for damage to safety apparel such as helmets). Medical expense coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and 24/7 roadside assistance are offered as add-ons.

Umbrella Insurance
If you have substantial assets, the liability coverage levels provided by standard car insurance and other policies might not be enough to protect you. That’s where umbrella coverage can help. An umbrella insurance policy complements basic policies such as auto and home insurance. The umbrella coverage picks up where the basic policy’s liability coverage lets off, and can also protect against things not covered by the base policy—for example, Elephant’s umbrella insurance covers libel, slander, and false arrest.

How Often Will Elephant Increase My Premiums?

If you get into an accident…
Even safe drivers can get into unfortunate situations, and most of the time, getting a ticket or a violation on your record will lead to premium increases. With Elephant, you can apply for accident forgiveness coverage, and then your premium won’t increase if you have an at-fault accident. However, if you get into an accident and don’t have accident forgiveness, your premium will most probably increase—even if you weren’t at fault.

If you’re a loyal customer…
Many Elephant policyholders complained of price hikes even though they had maintained clean driving records. It’s wise to compare rates with other insurance providers every time your policy is up for renewal, even if your rates with your existing insurance company don’t change.

If you file a claim…
The number of claims you file will also impact your Elephant premiums. If you file a claim, even for an accident where you weren’t at fault, your auto insurance rates will probably increase.

How Does Elephant’s Claims Process Work?

You can file a claim online by logging into your Elephant account online and following the prompts. You can also call 1 (844) 937-5353 if you would rather speak to a representative.

Once you’ve filed a claim, you can manage and track its progress online by entering the claim number and policy number. You can also email claims@elephant.com to get an update.

How Can I Cancel My Elephant Car Insurance Policy?

You can speak with an Elephant representative at 1 (855) ELEPHANT to cancel your policy. Agents are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM ET, as well as 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Saturdays.

Cancellation fees vary by state and policy, so you should consider canceling your policy at the end of the policy period to avoid such charges. Make sure you already have another insurance policy lined up for your car so there are no gaps in your insurance. You’ll also want to hold off on canceling your plan until you have your proof of insurance letter.

How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with Elephant?

Sadly, Elephant doesn’t offer rideshare insurance coverage

If you have an Elephant auto insurance policy, you may be able to purchase a ridesharing policy from another company to protect you during the time between when your personal coverage from Elephant ends and your Uber or Lyft policy takes over. You’ll still need to buy coverage from Uber or Lyft to protect you while you actually have a paying passenger in the car; a rideshare policy is only active between when you log into the Uber/Lyft app and when you get matched with a passenger. Because the ridesharing coverage only operates for a brief window, it’s typically quite affordable—though specific costs will vary based on your driving history, location, credit score, and other factors.
