Cheapest car insurance quotes in Nebraska

Liability coverage in Nebraska costs an average of $67 per month, while full coverage comes in at $127 per month. Nebraska’s average car insurance rates fall below the national averages of $99 and $173, respectively.

Nebraska’s rural geography plays a big role in its pricing. It ranks 45th in population density, which means there are fewer cars on the road and a lower risk of accidents than in more densely populated states.[1]

Still, rates can vary depending on your driving record, age, and coverage level. We’ve collected data from 120+ insurance companies in Nebraska to show how prices compare.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Nebraska: Auto-Owners

You’ll need 25/50/25 liability coverage to meet Nebraska’s minimum auto insurance requirements.[2]

Liability insurance meets the state’s minimum requirements but may not fully cover costs after a serious crash, especially in larger cities like Omaha or Lincoln, where repair and medical costs can run higher. Liability-only car insurance also won’t cover damage to your vehicle after an accident.

Nebraska drivers pay $67 per month on average for this level of coverage, with Auto-Owners offering the lowest rates.

The table below shows the cheapest liability-only car insurance rates in Nebraska.

Agent Tip: Does liability-only coverage offer enough protection in Nebraska?

Britney Balk

Customer Service Supervisor, Insurify

Nebraska’s lower traffic density helps keep rates low, but it doesn’t eliminate risk, especially when injuries are involved. Medical costs and liability claims can add up quickly after a serious accident, which is why many drivers opt for higher liability limits and full-coverage protection.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Nebraska: Auto-Owners

Full-coverage auto insurance adds collision and comprehensive protection on top of liability insurance. That matters in Nebraska, where hailstorms, tornadoes, and deer collisions are common.[3] It’s usually optional under Nebraska law, but lenders often require comprehensive and collision coverage if you have a car loan or lease.

The cheapest full-coverage rate for Nebraska drivers is $80 per month, from Auto-Owners.

We moved to another city and met with an agent to discuss insurance for our 3 vehicles, home, and outbuilding. I informed the agent that we wanted the same coverage as we had with our previous company. The agent said they could provide a quote in 2 days. The agent returned in 2 days with the cost for what we needed. We did not take the homeowner's policy because of many gray areas, but we accepted the vehicle quote. We came to the office the next day and reviewed what we requested. We agreed to pay everything for 6 months. To our surprise, what the agent quoted us was $168.00 more. When we asked about it, the agent said it had gone up overnight. Hard to believe, but we paid it. A couple of days later, we received the policy with another $60.00 added to one of the vehicles. We asked about it again, and the agent said it just happens. We've had Progressive for 5 months, and needless to say, we will not be renewing the policy with Progressive.

How car insurance costs in Nebraska have changed

Nebraska auto insurance rates rose through 2023 and 2024 as repair costs and claims expenses increased, according to Insurify data. Fraud is also a growing concern. The Nebraska Department of Insurance reported 1,201 fraud referrals in 2024, an 18% increase from the previous year.

Looking ahead, Insurify data projects a modest 1.4% decrease in Nebraska’s average car insurance prices in 2026, which would bring some relief after two years of increases.

Nebraska car insurance requirements

Nebraska requires all drivers to carry minimum levels of bodily injury liability, property damage, and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage.

Here are Nebraska’s minimum car insurance requirements:

Coverage Type
sort ascsort desc
Policy Limit
sort ascsort desc
Bodily injury liability $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000
Uninsured/underinsured motorist$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident

Nebraska is an at-fault state, meaning you’re responsible for paying for injuries and property damage you cause in a crash. Because medical and repair costs can exceed these limits, many drivers choose higher liability coverage. You may also want to add comprehensive and collision as additional coverage types to help protect your own vehicle.

Car insurance rates across Nebraska cities

Car insurance rates vary significantly across Nebraska cities due to differences in traffic, population density, and local risk factors.

Omaha’s mix of interstate traffic and higher vehicle theft rates can push car insurance rates higher, making it one of the most expensive cities in the state for coverage.[5] Drivers in smaller cities like Norfolk and Columbus tend to pay less due to fewer claims and lower traffic, according to Insurify data.

The table below shows average monthly car insurance quotes across Nebraska’s major cities.

Affordable car insurance in Nebraska with an at-fault accident: Auto-Owners

In Nebraska, you’re responsible for paying for the other party’s injuries and vehicle damage if you cause a crash. The state’s modified comparative negligence rule allows you to recover compensation if you’re less than 50% at fault, but your percentage of fault reduces your payout.[7]

About 5% of Nebraska drivers have an at-fault accident on their record, according to Insurify data. Auto-Owners typically offers some of the cheapest rates for these drivers.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
