Only carrying the Massachusetts state minimum amount of coverage is the most affordable option, but it can leave you with expensive coverage gaps. If you cause an accident, you’ll be responsible for all your car’s repairs out of pocket. Having full coverage can end up saving you more in the long run.

I assume it is like most others. USAA is, of course, offered to military personnel, retired military, and their families. Since my bill has skyrocketed to $1,459, I have been upset that my car costs that much to insure. I have had this car since January 2016. I haven't had any accidents, I don't drink alcohol, and my car mostly sits in the garage. It has approximately 67,800 miles on it. My bill is up over $200 from last year and the same for the year before. I just don't understand. Make of it what you will.

They start you off with a good discount and rate, but the longer you stay with them, they increase your bill. When you call to find out why, they have an attitude like I should have known. Not only that, I barely use my car. I'm elderly, with no tickets or accidents, and I'm paying $1,400 a year. They also give you a quote but don't tell you it's only a 6-month term. It's crazy, and my car is 20 years old, so paying that price is unreasonable. I'm actively looking for a different insurance company now.

Massachusetts car insurance requirements

Auto insurance is a legal requirement in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. To register a vehicle and legally drive, you must carry a minimum coverage policy with at least:

  • Property damage liability: $30,000 per accident

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

Massachusetts is a no-fault state, which means drivers also have to carry PIP. A minimum coverage policy must include at least $8,000 for PIP.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
