Overall good service over the last five years. I also had a small business liability policy. Never any claims, but they suddenly decided that they will not insure my sound and light reinforcement company. It's unfortunate that they are going to lose a good paying customer. Starts out with a medium to high initial payment, then stays high for 6 months. Then, without any accidents, pull-overs, or any problems, the insurance company might decrease the rate by thirty cents. How much is car insurance in Indiana?

Indiana drivers pay about $1,537 per year for full coverage and around $784 per year for liability-only insurance. Both are below the national averages.

But insurance costs are going up. Severe storms, hail, tornadoes, and straight-line winds are the most common billion-dollar disasters in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.[4] These events often affect Indiana — the state experiences more than 20 tornadoes per year — leading to higher insurance rates and more expensive claims.

Average car insurance quotes in Indiana cities

Car insurance rates can vary widely across Indiana. Cities like Indianapolis have higher premiums due to heavier traffic, higher theft rates, and more accidents. At the same time, you’ll often find lower rates in more rural parts of the state.

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in Indiana

Car insurance premiums in Indiana can vary widely from one insurer to another. Each company has its own pricing formula and weights factors like your credit, location, and driving history differently, which can lead to big differences in quotes.

This variation is especially clear in Indiana, where driving conditions range from busy city streets in Indianapolis to fast rural highways, each with distinct risks. Insurers also consider factors such as past claims, annual mileage, and where you park your car.

To get the most accurate auto insurance quotes, you should:

  • Determine your coverage needs.

  • Gather your information, including driver’s license, driving record, and VIN.

  • Compare quotes from at least three to five insurers using a comparison platform.

  • Use identical coverage limits so quotes are truly comparable.

  • Include regional insurers, which often price competitively in Indiana.

  • Shop again after major life changes, like moving or buying a car.

  • Bundle policies (auto plus home or renters) to unlock car insurance discounts.

  • Review discounts annually to avoid missing new savings opportunities.

Indiana car insurance requirements

Indiana requires drivers to carry coverage that meets certain minimum coverage limits. This means your insurance policy must meet or exceed the following coverage levels:

Coverage Type
sort ascsort desc
Indiana Minimum Limit
sort ascsort desc
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000

Remember, you must carry proof of insurance, and failing to maintain coverage may result in license suspension. The state also requires insurers to offer uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, though drivers may reject this coverage in writing.

Indiana follows an at-fault system, meaning the driver who is responsible for an accident pays for injuries and damages.[5]

How to find the cheapest Indiana car insurance

The best way to lower your car insurance costs in Indiana is to focus on the factors you can control, like your credit and driving history.

Indiana’s average credit score is a bit lower than the U.S. average, according to Equifax. This can affect insurance premiums, since many insurers use credit-based insurance scores during the quoting process. People with lower scores often pay higher rates.

To save money on your next auto policy, you can:

  • Improve your credit. Insurers see drivers with higher credit-based insurance scores as less risky to insure and will generally offer them a better rate.

  • Maintain a clean driving record. Even a single speeding ticket on your record can raise your rates.

  • Use telematics programs. If you’re a safe driver who doesn’t speed, opting for a telematics program could save you a lot of money.

  • Raise your deductible. A higher deductible leads to lower rates because you’re taking on more of the risk yourself. Just be sure you can afford to pay the deductible should you need to file a claim.

  • Bundle auto and home insurance. Many insurers offer savings for bundling coverages. Be sure to ask your insurer what bundling options are available. You may find an opportunity you weren’t expecting.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
