Agent Tip: Is liability-only insurance enough coverage in Alabama?

Austin Moyers

Austin Moyers

Linkedin

Sales Manager, Insurify

Liability-only coverage meets Alabama’s minimum coverage requirements, but it often isn’t enough if you cause a serious accident. Repair costs, medical bills, or lawsuits can easily exceed minimum limits, and you’d have to pay the difference out of pocket. Full coverage costs a bit more but gives you better protection when you need it most.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Alabama: USAA

For the most protection in Alabama, consider a full-coverage policy. Full coverage typically includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverages. In Alabama, full coverage averages $136 per month. But some insurers offer lower premiums.

The chart below details the cheapest full-coverage car insurance options in Alabama, according to Insurify data.

Why we picked this company

If you have an average credit history, Auto-Owners is a good choice for car insurance coverage. The company offers cheap premiums for Alabama drivers with average credit. It also has a variety of coverage options and discounts.

But Auto-Owners may not be the best choice if you value online convenience. You have to get a quote through an agent, and the company’s mobile apps have mixed ratings.

Pros
  • Low rates for drivers with average credit

  • Many available coverage options

  • Many available car insurance discounts

Cons
  • Must work with an agent for a quote

  • Mobile apps have mixed ratings

  • Low Trustpilot rating

USAA has the cheapest Alabama car insurance across many categories. But USAA offers coverage only to Alabama military members, veterans, certain government workers, and their families. Qualifying drivers can find significant savings, though. USAA’s liability rates are less than the state average.

If you want in-person service, USAA may not be right for you. The insurer doesn’t have any physical branches in Alabama.

Pros
  • Low premiums for many drivers

  • Many car insurance discounts

  • Highly rated mobile apps

Cons
  • Available only to military members and their families

Alabama car insurance FAQs

If you still have questions about car insurance in Alabama, we’re here to help. Below, we address some common issues from drivers about coverage in the Yellowhammer State.

  • What is the cheapest car insurance in Alabama?

National General is the cheapest car insurance company in Alabama, with liability rates averaging $45 per month, according to Insurify data. But how much you pay for car insurance in Alabama depends on several factors, including your age, location in the state, and driving record.

  • How do you get car insurance when you’re poor?

Even if money is tight, you can still find affordable car insurance in Alabama. Comparing quotes from multiple companies can help you find the lowest price for the coverage you need. You can also check if your insurer has any low-income programs or discounts that may lower your rate.

  • Why is Elephant insurance so cheap?

Elephant insurance is cheap for a few reasons. Elephant is a direct-to-consumer insurance company, which allows it to skip paying agent commissions and pass some of the savings on to you. The company also has a variety of discounts, including multi-car and work-from-home discounts.

  • What can you do if you can’t afford car insurance?

You have a few options if you can’t afford car insurance in Alabama. Consider lowering your coverage limits or raising your deductible to reduce your premium. You can also look for pay-per-mile or usage-based insurance programs that charge only for the miles you drive.

  • Can you go to jail in Alabama for no insurance?

Yes. Driving without car insurance in Alabama is a misdemeanor. While you could spend time in jail for not having insurance, it’s more likely you’ll have to pay a fine, have your license suspended, or have your vehicle registration revoked.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
