5 Best Auto Insurance Companies for Uber and Lyft Drivers

This article explains how to get the best rideshare insurance, ensuring that you are covered while driving for Uber or Lyft.

Uber and Lyft drivers beware: Standard personal car insurance does not cover you while you are driving for a rideshare service.

While on the job, your only active coverage is the commercial insurance provided by Uber or Lyft. This temporary coverage may offer less protection than you need, and may not adequately cover you, your vehicle, and your passengers in the event of an accident.

Commercial Coverage for Uber and Lyft

The commercial coverage you’re provided while driving for Uber or Lyft is broken down into stages. These include offline, available, en route, and on trip. Uber and Lyft provide different coverage amounts to their drivers at each different stage of a trip.

To ensure adequate protection while driving for Uber and Lyft, it is recommended that drivers explore additional coverage in the form of dedicated rideshare insurance from an independent carrier.

Types of Rideshare Policies

  1. Those that offer added protection while your are online with your rideshare service

  2. Those that extend your personal coverage into certain stages of your trip.

While using Insurify, be sure to select Rideshare Driver to receive quotes for Rideshare policies.

Best Uber & Lyft Car Insurance Companies

We compiled a list of the best auto companies that provide ridesharing insurance. Every year, we also publish a Best Car Insurance Companies list, featuring all insurance companies.

1. GEICO

  • Insurify Composite Score for GEICO: 89

  • Policy Description: GEICO Ridesharing Insurance. This hybrid rideshare policy is meant to replace your personal auto insurance policy and covers you whether you’re driving on or off the clock.

  • States Covered: 40 (more than any other U.S. auto insurance company)

  • Estimated Cost: $25 added per month to your existing personal auto insurance premium with GEICO

  • Coverage: All rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft

This rideshare insurance is meant to cover you as the named driver on the policy, anyone living in your home, your passengers (up to your policy limits for injuries or property damage), and property damage to your car if you have collision and comprehensive insurance. Any vehicle you do not own is not covered under your rideshare insurance.

If you have multiple vehicles in your household, you’ll need to continue to have personal auto insurance on the cars not being used for rideshare services.

2. Erie Insurance

  • Insurify Composite Score for Erie: 89

  • Policy DescriptionErie's Rideshare Insurance. This is rolled into your personal auto insurance coverage. Erie has simply extended their “business use” clause of personal auto insurance policies to include rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. Previously they only included things like pizza delivery.

  • States Covered: 11

  • Estimated Cost: $9 to $15 added per month to your existing personal auto insurance premium with Erie

  • Coverage: All rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft

3. Allstate

  • Insurify Composite Score for Allstate: 88

  • Policy DescriptionAllstate Ride for Hire policy. This rideshare policy is NOT meant to replace your personal auto insurance policy. Rather it is deductible gap coverage for up to $2,500 while you are driving for a rideshare company, like Uber or Lyft.

  • States Covered: 15

  • Estimated Cost: $15 to $20 added per month to your existing personal auto insurance premium with Allstate

  • Coverage: All rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft

Because this policy does not cover you when you are signed off your rideshare app, it does not replace your personal auto insurance policy.

4. Safeco

  • Insurify Composite Score for Safeco: 85

  • Policy DescriptionSafeco’s RideSharing Coverage. This insurance extends your existing personal auto insurance to cover you while on the clock for a rideshare company like Uber and Lyft. It does not replace your personal auto insurance policy.

  • States Covered: 13

  • Estimated Cost: $10 added per month to your existing personal auto insurance premium with Safeco

  • Coverage: All rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft

If you have multiple vehicles in your household, ridesharing coverage will only protect vehicles explicitly written under this optional coverage.

5. State Farm

  • Insurify Composite Score for State Farm: 84

  • Policy DescriptionRideshare Driver Coverage. This optional coverage extends your personal auto insurance to your rideshare trips. It does NOT provide additional gap coverage. More importantly, your liability coverage does NOT carry over to your rideshare trips during the en route or on trip stages. Liability is only included during the offline and available stages. This means that as the driver you will have to make sure that Uber and Lyft's liability limits are high enough to cover possible liabilities with passengers. All other coverages during your en route and on trip stages are based on the coverages and limits you’ve selected for your personal auto policy.

  • States Covered: 23

  • Estimated Cost: Additional 15 to 20 percent of your current premium

  • Coverage: All rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft

State Farm claims this additional coverage is a smart decision because it puts your personal policy deductible into effect while ridesharing and if you have a claim, you can deal with State Farm directly, instead of your rideshare company.
