Agent Tip: Does liability-only offer enough coverage in Mississippi?

Mallory Mooney

Mallory Mooney

Director of Sales and Service

Liability insurance satisfies Mississippi’s requirements, but most Mississippians should seriously consider a full-coverage policy. The average used car now costs more than $25,000, and you don’t want to be stuck having to replace your vehicle out of pocket if you cause an accident.

It also has the highest rate of fatal motor vehicle crashes of any state.[2] That means a much higher risk of insurers paying out costly claims, which leads to more expensive car insurance.

Comparing auto insurance quotes from the best car insurance companies in Mississippi can help you find relatively affordable coverage.

Here are some of the best low-cost insurers in the state.

Pros
  • Low rates for Mississippi drivers with a DUI

  • Above-average J.D. Power customer satisfaction rating

Expensive. They are decent if you are in an accident - they arrange a rental (if you have that coverage) and contact the other driver's insurance, and manage the claim. Homeowners - they don't cover wind nor flood (found this out the hard way after the agent neglected to tell me after I returned from an overseas assignment).

Mississippi car insurance requirements

Mississippi requires drivers to carry at least the following amounts of liability insurance to drive legally:[3]

Car Insurance Coverage Type
sort ascsort desc
Mississippi Requirement
sort ascsort desc
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident

Alternatively, you can post a bond or make a cash or security deposit equal to the Mississippi minimum requirements. But liability coverage is the best way to ensure you comply with state law if the authorities pull you over for a traffic violation or you’re involved in an accident.

And if you have a car loan, your lender may require you to have comprehensive, collision, and uninsured motorist coverage in addition to what’s outlined above.

Car insurance rates across Mississippi cities

As the capital and most populous city in Mississippi, Jackson has the highest car insurance rates in the state.[4] Smaller cities, like Columbus, Oxford, and Tupelo, have much lower premiums, partly because of their smaller populations and fewer vehicles on the road.

Cheapest car insurance for teen drivers in Mississippi: USAA

Teen drivers are among the least likely to wear seat belts, which increases the chances of serious injury or death in an accident, according to Mississippi Department of Transportation (DOT) data.[6] Restricted driving hours end once a driver turns 17 in Mississippi, which is younger than in many states.

Many of these restrictions are in place because teens tend to drive more aggressively and cause more accidents than other age groups. The Mississippi DOT reports that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 20.

That increased risk leads to much higher car insurance rates for teens in Mississippi. The average cost for liability car insurance for Mississippi teens is $127 per month, according to Insurify data.

The table below lists the cheapest car insurers for teens in Mississippi.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
