Progressive Sucks
Progressive took 4 months to handle my claim from start to finish. The claims representative lied to me and told me it was because parts were on backorder, but the shop was done with the repairs in 2 months. Then I was told that they paid the shop electronically, but I know the owner. He said they sent a check. They also recently canceled my policy because I added a vehicle within 30 days of starting a new policy, then told me it was a state rule. The problem is they are the cheapest option, so I have no choice but to use them or pay a lot more.

Why we picked this company

Only about 0.05% of people in New Jersey drive for Uber or Lyft, but if you do, New Jersey law requires you to have rideshare insurance. Progressive offers rideshare coverage at below-average rates.

When you add a rideshare endorsement to your policy, you’ll have protection during all phases of a trip. And if your personal policy includes roadside assistance or rental car reimbursement, those coverages apply while you’re working as a rideshare driver.

Pros
  • Below-average rideshare insurance rates in New Jersey

  • Coverage applies as soon as you start working

  • One policy covers personal use and rideshare driving

Cons
  • Poor Trustpilot reviews

  • Below-average J.D. Power customer satisfaction rating in the Mid-Atlantic region

  • To identify the best auto insurance companies for New Jersey drivers, our editorial team analyzed regional and national insurers that sell policies in New Jersey. How much is car insurance in New Jersey?

New Jersey’s average car insurance rates are higher than national averages. Full-coverage car insurance in New Jersey averages $254 monthly, and liability-only coverage averages $182 per month. By comparison, national average rates are $186 for full coverage every month and $98 for liability-only coverage.

Average full-coverage rates in New Jersey rose 20% in 2025, according to Insurify data.

Multiple factors make New Jersey car insurance costs higher than average.

Because New Jersey is a no-fault state, standard car insurance policies must include personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage in addition to bodily injury and property damage liability. And in 2026, higher limits took effect for UM/UIM coverage.

New Jersey’s population density means higher accident risks, which also affect premiums.

Drivers in New Jersey have three policy options to consider, too.[2] Standard policies, which offer the most robust coverage, a basic policy that excludes UM/UIM coverage and has lower liability limits, and a Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP) that provides only medical coverage for drivers and their passengers.[3]

Why you should compare car insurance quotes in New Jersey

New Jersey’s complex and costly insurance market makes comparing quotes especially valuable. In most states, drivers choose between liability-only (minimum coverage) and full coverage (which adds comprehensive coverage and collision), with a few optional add-ons. In New Jersey, drivers face three very different choices: standard, basic, and SAIP (also known as dollar-a-day car insurance).

The following table compares the three policy types available in New Jersey, what they include and exclude, minimum requirements for each, who qualifies, and how they affect your ability to sue following an accident:

How to find the cheapest New Jersey car insurance

Some tactics for finding affordable car insurance work everywhere, like comparison shopping and maintaining a clean driving record. Here are some tips that may be particularly helpful for New Jersey drivers:

  • More than 12% of New Jersey households have more than one vehicle, according to Insurify data. Check with your insurer to confirm you’re getting a multi-vehicle discount.

  • More than 74% of policyholders in New Jersey own their vehicles outright. That means they don’t have to carry full coverage. Drivers with older or lower-value vehicles might save by choosing a liability-only policy.

  • If you have few family responsibilities and assets, New Jersey’s Basic Policy might be a good cost-saving option for you. It makes bodily injury coverage optional and at a lower amount, and it doesn’t require you to buy UM/UIM coverage.

  • New Jersey is a smaller state, which may explain why the average annual mileage state drivers log each year is comparatively low. If you don’t drive many miles, pay-per-mile insurance could save you money.

  • Insurers can use information in your credit history to generate a credit-based insurance score that they use to help predict how likely you are to file a claim. New Jersey’s average credit score is 724, which is good.[4] If yours is lower than average, working to improve it could also improve your chances of finding a lower car insurance rate.

Although car insurance premiums decreased nationwide last year, drivers in the Garden State weren’t so lucky. New Jersey’s average car insurance premium rose by 20% between 2024 and 2025 — the greatest increase in the country.

This increase is largely due to the state’s higher minimum coverage requirements, but rising accident rates also contribute to the issue. By the end of 2026, the average cost of car insurance in New Jersey could climb by 1.4%, according to Insurify data, reaching a new high of $3,024 per year for full coverage.

New Jersey car insurance FAQs

For more information on New Jersey car insurance, see answers to the frequently asked questions below.

  • What is the average car insurance cost in New Jersey?

In New Jersey, drivers pay an average of $218 per month for car insurance, with full coverage averaging $254 per month and liability-only coverage averaging $182. But young drivers and those with violations like at-fault accidents, DUIs, and speeding tickets will pay higher-than-average rates.

  • Which company has the cheapest car insurance in New Jersey?

NJM has the cheapest car insurance in New Jersey, based on Insurify data. Its liability-only coverage averages $125 per month.

  • What are the minimum car insurance requirements in New Jersey?

A Basic Policy meets New Jersey’s minimum car insurance requirements, but it includes only $5,000 in property damage liability coverage per accident and $15,000 in PIP per person, per accident.

  • What are the best car insurance companies in New Jersey?

Some of the best car insurance companies in New Jersey are State Farm, The General, and GEICO. But the best car insurer for you depends on your coverage needs and preferences. It’s a good idea to compare quotes from several insurers to find the best one for your situation.

  • How can you get cheaper car insurance in New Jersey?

You can get cheaper car insurance in New Jersey by dropping your comprehensive and collision coverage or raising your deductibles. You can also increase your PIP deductible or choose your own health insurance as your primary medical coverage.

If you’re eligible, you can also consider the New Jersey Special Automotive Insurance Policy (SAIP), also called dollar-a-day car insurance. It provides medical-only coverage for $365 per year to eligible drivers enrolled in Federal Medicaid with hospitalization.

  • Is NJM cheaper than GEICO in New Jersey?

NJM’s average monthly rates for full-coverage and liability-only car insurance tend to be lower than GEICO’s rates. NJM’s full-coverage average is currently $169 per month, and liability coverage averages $143 monthly. GEICO’s monthly averages in New Jersey are $290 and $225, respectively. Keep in mind that rates fluctuate, and factors unique to you, like your age, gender, driving history, and more, all affect your premium.

  • What’s a good price for car insurance in NJ?

New Jersey’s average car insurance costs are $254 per month for full coverage and $182 for minimum coverage (liability-only). If you find rates lower than average, you could consider that a good price.

  • What insurance company has the best rates in New Jersey?

NJM consistently offers the best rates for most New Jersey drivers, Insurify data shows. But since every insurer weighs rating factors differently, you may be able to find even cheaper rates with other companies.

  • Can you get a policy in New Jersey with a bad driving record?

You can get car insurance with a bad driving record in New Jersey. In fact, to legally drive, you’re required to have car insurance. A bad driving record may prompt multiple insurers to deny you coverage. If that happens, you can turn to the New Jersey Personal Automobile Insurance Plan (NJPAIP), an assigned-risk pool. NJPAIP rates are likely to be higher than standard auto insurance policy rates.

  • What’s the average premium for full-coverage car insurance in New Jersey?

The average cost of full-coverage car insurance in New Jersey is $254 per month, according to Insurify’s proprietary database of more than 250 million auto insurance quotes.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
