  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Why we picked this company

Getting an at-fault accident or traffic violation on your record usually leads to higher rates, but NJM has affordable rates in New Jersey for drivers with an accident.

The company offers New Jersey drivers a three-year discount after enrolling in a defensive driver course. Other discounts, like for paperless payments, electronic payments, and paying in full, can help you find a lower rate.

Pros
  • Several available discounts

  • Above-average J.D. Power customer satisfaction score in Mid-Atlantic region

Cons
  • Coverage limited to Northeast U.S.

  • Rates higher than average for drivers with incidents on their record

Why we picked this company

CSAA’s average liability-only rates are less than the state average. While liability-only insurance is a less robust car insurance policy, it can still be a good choice for drivers of older cars. Unfortunately, CSAA has below-average customer satisfaction scores and requires an AAA membership to enroll. But membership comes with additional perks and discounts.

Pros
  • Some of the lowest liability-only rates in the state

  • Many discounts available through AAA membership

Cons
  • Below-average J.D. Power customer satisfaction score in Mid-Atlantic region

  • AAA membership required to enroll

Why we picked this company

Plymouth Rock offers seniors low average rates in New Jersey. Senior drivers older than 60 may qualify for its mature driver discount after completing an approved defensive driving course.

You can save additional money by bundling home and auto insurance, going accident-free over an extended period, or insuring multiple vehicles. But if you’re looking for top customer service, you may want to consider alternatives.

Pros
  • Several available discounts

  • Loyal customer benefits

Cons
  • Coverage limited to Northeast U.S.

  • Mixed customer reviews

How to get the cheapest car insurance in New Jersey

New Jersey drivers looking for the cheapest car insurance rates may want to consider the following options:[1]

  • Take advantage of discounts. Most companies offer discounts for safe driving, home and auto bundling, or adding multiple cars to your auto policy.

  • Choose a safe vehicle. Cars with advanced safety features and impressive safety records are cheaper to insure.

  • Improve your credit. New Jersey allows insurers to weigh your credit information when determining rates.

  • Raise your deductible. Drivers who choose a higher deductible generally pay lower monthly rates.

Cheapest liability-only car insurance in New Jersey: NJM

When an accident is your fault, liability insurance only covers repairs and medical expenses for the other driver. You can’t use liability coverage to fix your own vehicle or pay your medical bills. But without liability insurance, you’d be entirely responsible for paying the other driver’s costs out of pocket.

Liability insurance in New Jersey costs $124 per month, on average. The table below highlights the cheapest liability-only insurers in the state.

Car insurance requirements in New Jersey

New Jersey is a “choice no-fault” state. This means you’re required to carry no-fault insurance, also known as personal injury protection.

In New Jersey, PIP covers medical bills after an accident, regardless of fault. When you purchase your policy, you can also add an “unlimited right to sue” option, which allows you to sue the other driver after an accident, depending on your injuries.[2]

Here’s a closer look at the coverage required in New Jersey for basic policies:[3]

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Property damage liability$5,000 per accident
Personal injury protection$15,000 per person, per accident

    New Jersey insurance laws/programs

New Jersey drivers are required to present authorities with proof of insurance before an inspection, after an accident, and during a traffic stop or “spot check.” Driving without insurance can result in fines, community service, or a license suspension.

New Jersey’s “No-Pay, No-Play” law specifies that drivers who sue after an accident will be unable to gain “non-economic damages” if they were uninsured at the time of the accident.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

People with traffic violations on their driving record often pay higher insurance rates. Certain types of incidents make you a high-risk driver, including speeding tickets, driving under the influence, and at-fault accidents.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
