Whether you grew up with GEICO’s iconic gecko or tech-forward cavemen, the company has enjoyed enduring popularity across the United States. GEICO is a good option for drivers with clean records who are looking for relatively low insurance rates, and those who want to be rewarded for staying on a policy for a couple of years. However, GEICO typically increases rates for those with spotty driving records and only offers a telematics program for Connecticut and Pennsylvania residents.

GEICO Car Insurance Quotes and Discounts

You should always compare quotes and look up discounts before purchasing an auto insurance policy. You might find a much better deal, and seemingly expensive policies could end up being very affordable after applying discounts.

It might seem like a long, arduous process to look up quotes and discounts on every company’s website just to write them down on paper and compare. But the same process only takes minutes on comparison websites like Insurify, which lets you compare insurance quotes across up to 20 different companies.

Auto Insurance Quotes Comparison: GEICO vs. Progressive, State Farm, and Allstate

Insurify’s data team stacked up car insurance quotes from GEICO, Progressive, State Farm, and Allstate to see how GEICO measured up to its competitors. Below are the quotes for a 42-year-old female in Houston, Texas, with a clean driving record:

Insurance companyQuote
GEICO$50/month
State Farm$56/month
Progressive$57/month
Allstate$160/month

GEICO offers the cheapest quote for this driver profile, with Progressive and State Farm offering similar quotes. In comparison to the rest, Allstate’s quote is quite high.

These are the quotes for the same driver profile, but with a speeding ticket for driving at 75 mph in a 50 mph zone:

Insurance companyQuote
GEICO$76/month
State Farm$56/month
Progressive$68/month
Allstate$160/month

GEICO’s quote shot up about $16 higher with a speeding ticket on record. So for this driver profile, GEICO offers a steeper rate than Progressive and State Farm, but is still cheaper than Allstate.

These are the quotes for the same driver profile, this time with an at-fault accident on record:

Insurance companyQuote
GEICO$89/month
State Farm$61/month
Progressive$88/month
Allstate$234/month

GEICO’s rates shot up even further, but are basically on par with those from Progressive. State Farm offered the cheapest quote for this profile, while Allstate still offered the highest quote.

These prices aren’t necessarily the ones you’ll see while shopping for insurance quotes online. So always be sure to research your options and compare auto insurance quotes online

GEICO Auto Insurance Coverages

GEICO has an array of auto insurance coverage options you can choose from. It offers state minimum coverages, but you can always customize your limits if you want more protection.

Liability (BI/PD) coverage
Required by 49 out of 50 states, liability insurance forms the basis of any car insurance policy. GEICO’s liability covers both bodily injury liability and property damage liability. This means GEICO will pay to cover any medical costs or property damage you cause to someone else’s car or property in an accident.

Comprehensive coverage
GEICO’s comprehensive coverage will pay for damages your car may sustain as a result of theft, vandalism, flood, fire, and other covered losses. Make sure to check in with your GEICO insurance agent to find out what other instances your policy covers.

Collision coverage
GEICO’s collision coverage pays for any damages to your car when it comes into contact with another vehicle or object. This doesn’t just mean collisions with other cars, but also instances where your car hits a tree, mailbox, lamp post, etc.

Medical coverage
Purchasing this coverage would mean that GEICO will pay for any accident-related medical bills your incur. GEICO’s medical coverage also includes Personal Injury Protection, which means GEICO will pay for your long-term treatment costs and any wages you lost as a result of an accident. This coverage goes into effect, regardless of who caused an accident.

Uninsured motorist coverage
If you’re unfortunate enough to get into an accident with someone with no insurance, you might end up paying out-of-pocket for damages to your car or any bodily injuries. If you purchase GEICO’s uninsured motorist coverage, GEICO will cover those costs for you. This also includes instances where the at-fault party has insurance, but not enough liability coverage to cover the costs of your damage.

Read more about these common components of your car insurance coverage here.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by GEICO Insurance

  • Emergency roadside assistance: For as low as $14 a year (per car), you could get GEICO’s emergency roadside assistance coverage. So if you’re ever locked out of your vehicle or stranded by the side of the road, a GEICO representative will come open your car, jumpstart your car battery, deliver fuel, change a flat tire, or tow your vehicle to the nearest repair facility. You can use your GEICO app to contact an agent and file a roadside assistance request, which takes about two minutes, according to the GEICO website. GEICO’s roadside assistance is available 24/7, and agents can locate your position using the app’s GPS.
  • Windshield and glass replacement: GEICO usually offers glass coverage through its comprehensive coverage. So if your car has glass damage due to an incident covered by your comprehensive coverage, GEICO will pay to repair or replace your windshield, windows, etc. This is subject to your comprehensive coverage deductible.
  • Accident forgiveness: GEICO offers free accident forgiveness to policyholders who have a clean driving record for a set period (this varies state-to-state, so you should check with a GEICO agent to see if you’re eligible). New GEICO policyholders can also purchase accident forgiveness when they buy their GEICO auto insurance policy. New policyholders must meet driving history requirements before GEICO allows the purchase. Accident forgiveness isn’t available in California, Connecticut, or Massachusetts.
  • Rental car coverage: If you’re renting a car while on vacation, your GEICO comprehensive coverage should also extend to the rental car. The rental car, however, must be similar to your covered vehicle in terms of value and mileage. If the rental vehicle is fancier than the car you’ve insured with GEICO, you should probably buy extra insurance from the rental car company.

Other Insurance Products Offered by GEICO Insurance

While GEICO mostly focuses on automobile insurance, it partners with over 30 different companies to offer home, life, and renters insurance. One of these partners ultimately underwrites and services the insurance product, not GEICO.

  • Homeowners insurance: GEICO home insurance covers your home and personal property from any property damage from fire, weather, and other disasters (not including flooding). Standard coverage also includes personal liability and loss of use.
  • Renters insurance: GEICO’s renters insurance covers you and your belongings in the event of a fire, burglary, and other disasters. It doesn’t, however, include the structure of your rental, since your landlord typically insures that.
  • Life insurance: GEICO offers term life and whole life/universal life insurance. Each policy covers a different period, but both generally give beneficiaries like families and dependents lump sum payments when the insured person dies.
  • Motorcycle insurance: GEICO’s motorcycle insurance covers most motorcycles, including sportbikes, cruisers, touring bikes, Enduros, scooters, dirt bikes, trikes, and some custom bikes. Its motorcycle coverage plans are almost entirely similar to its auto insurance policies.
  • RV insurance: GEICO’s RV insurance includes total loss replacement, replacement costs for personal belongings, emergency expense coverage, and even vacation liability for any bodily injury or property damage that occurs on your vacation site. GEICO will also repair your RV’s windshield for free and charge only $50 to replace it.
  • ATV insurance: GEICO also offers ATV insurance that is very similar to its auto insurance policy coverages.

How Can I Buy Auto Insurance from GEICO?

You can purchase a GEICO auto insurance policy both online or by calling 1 (800) 841-2964. If you’d prefer to buy your policy online, you can go through GEICO’s online quoting process to first get a quote, and then put in your social security and vehicle identification number, before buying the policy. Before buying your GEICO policy, you should consider shopping around for better deals and quotes on a comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare quotes from up to 20 different companies at once. It only takes minutes, and it’s completely free!

How Can I Pay for My GEICO Car Insurance Policy?

GEICO offers an installment-based payment system. This means you have the option to pay for your auto insurance premium in full, or you could pay in installments of two, three, four, five, or six. Depending on what you choose, you’ll have to pay GEICO anywhere from 25 to 100 percent of your premium when you buy the policy and make subsequent payments in installments.

For example, if you pick the two-installment option, GEICO will make you pay 50 percent of your premium on the day your policy starts, and the rest at the end of two months. Similarly, if you choose to pay your premium in three installments, GEICO will charge you 40 percent of the total premium on the first day of your policy, and 30 percent at the end of month one and two of your policy.

GEICO only allows new policyholders to choose the five installment plan, and only those renewing their policy can choose the six installment plan. As any modern-day insurance company would, GEICO accepts multiple online payment methods:

  • Online check
  • Debit or credit card
  • Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)

And you can use the following channels to make your payments:

  • GEICO’s mobile app
  • By phone, dial 1 (800) 932-8872
  • By mail, send a check or money order (along with the paper bill stub) to GEICO Insurance Remittance Center One GEICO Plaza Bethesda, MD 20810-0001

How Often Will GEICO Increase My Premiums?

We all know the age-old tale of the increasing premium. You find a great deal with a company, you sign up, and in six months, that same deal is now $50 more expensive. While upsetting, it’s not uncommon for your GEICO premium to increase at the end of a six-month policy. There are a couple reasons why this may happen:

You got in an accident: Accidents, especially those where you were at fault, will increase your GEICO premium. This is because accidents usually point to risky driving behavior, and, as such, it’ll cost more to insure you. However, if you’re a driver with a clean driving record, you may be eligible for GEICO’s accident forgiveness, which means your premium won’t rise if you get into an accident. You’ll need to already have an accident forgiveness policy before you have an accident, and you’re only “forgiven” for one accident per policy, not per driver.

You filed a claim: GEICO won’t necessarily increase your premium if you file a claim. Usually, GEICO agents will review the details of the accident, how many claims you’ve made in the past, and how much of the claim GEICO had to pay.

You committed a driving violation: If you were caught speeding or driving under the influence, GEICO would most probably increase your premium. Both speeding and driving while intoxicated speak to risky driving behavior, and GEICO will increase your premium as a result. In addition to changes to your driving record, things like moving locations, getting a divorce, and changing the type of car you drive could also increase your premium.

If your GEICO premium has increased, you should probably shop around to check if there’s a better deal out there for you. Instead of visiting multiple websites for quotes, you can use a quotes comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare quotes across up to 20 companies at a time.

How Does GEICO’s Claims Process Work?

Filing a claim can be a frustrating ordeal, especially if you were involved in an unfortunate accident or can no longer use your vehicle. Here’s how to report a claim to GEICO:

  • Take numerous, detailed pictures of the damages to your vehicle. If you were in an accident, you should take photos of all the vehicles involved.
  • Take down the personal and insurance information of all parties involved.
  • If you made a police report or called emergency services, take down the credentials of responding officers and document the police report number.

After you’ve gathered this information, you can file a claim through the GEICO mobile app, by calling 1 (800) 841-3000, or online at geico.com/claims. An adjuster will then come by to survey the damage and provide an estimate of how much it’ll cost to fix it. You can then take it to any body shop you want, show them the estimate GEICO gave you, and see if they could do the repairs in the same price range. Bear in mind, you’ll still have to pay your insurance deductible.

Auto Repair Xpress

GEICO offers Auto Repair Xpress for policyholders who have filed a claim, which means the whole process of damage evaluation, renting a temporary car, and getting your repairs is handled by one facility. Once you file your claim, you can schedule an appointment with the nearest GEICO Auto Repair Xpress repair facility. Once you arrive at the facility, a shop representative will have a look at your vehicle damage and arrange a rental car for you to take home.

The same facility will then repair your vehicle and give you updates along the way. You can even visit the facility for a pre-delivery review of your car before picking it up for good. When you come back to the facility to retrieve your car, you will get all repair-related documents and repair estimates. If you get your vehicle repaired through Auto Repair Xpress, GEICO guarantees the repairs for as long as you own the car.

How Can I Cancel My GEICO Car Insurance Policy?

If you’ve decided to part ways and cancel your GEICO car insurance policy, you can call 1 (800) 841-1587. An automated service should answer the phone, and you should say “cancel insurance policy.” The voice should then ask what type of policy you’d like to cancel, why you want to cancel, and so on. In a last-ditch effort to keep you on your policy, a GEICO agent may offer you a lower price.

If your reason for canceling was the price, you should probably take the deal. However, if you’ve decided you really dislike GEICO’s service, make sure you already have a new insurance policy lined up, the day you cancel your GEICO policy. This is important, because driving without insurance is illegal, and having a gap in your insurance coverage will lead to higher premiums in the future.

Make sure you shop around and get plenty of quotes from different companies before picking one. This may seem like a time-consuming process, but you can do this in minutes by using a quotes comparison website like Insurify. On Insurify, you can compare quotes between up to 20 companies at one time!

How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with GEICO?

GEICO offers rideshare insurance in all states except Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Texas, and Utah. Rideshare insurance covers the period between a rideshare driver’s opening up the app and accepting a passenger. This period is generally not covered by either the rideshare driver’s personal insurance or the rideshare company’s insurance.

Read Insurify’s guide to rideshare insurance to better understand how insurance works for Uber and Lyft drivers. Insurify’s data team gathered some quotes from GEICO to see how much adding rideshare insurance “costs.”

GEICO Rideshare Insurance Quotes

StateAge SexQuote without rideshare insuranceQuote with rideshare insurance
CA30M$54/mo$107/mo
CA30F$49/mo$107/mo
IL30M$56/mo$216/mo
IL30F$62/mo$216/mo

Of course, these quotes vary widely depending on factors like age, location, driving history, and sex, so you won’t necessarily get similar quotes. From these quotes, it seems that rideshare coverage “costs” about the same for both males and females. GEICO’s quotes, however, varied widely across state lines, with the cost of rideshare insurance adding around $60 in California and $160 in Illinois. You can’t really be sure about how much rideshare insurance would cost for you specifically, however, which is why it’s so important to compare car insurance quotes before settling down on a policy.

Insurance Companies Similar to GEICO

GEICO has long been one of America’s preferred insurance providers, with over 15 million current policyholders. As such, it appeals to a wide range of driver demographics. Its competitors include other large insurance companies like Progressive, Liberty Mutual, and Allstate. Alternatively, if you’d rather be insured with a smaller insurance company, you might consider more regionally based insurance providers like Mercury or Elephant. This, of course, depends on what state you’re in. Visit Insurify’s website to find cheap car insurance options in your area—it only takes a couple of minutes!

According to Insurify’s internal database of over 2 million car insurance applications and analysis of external sources, people who previously held GEICO auto insurance policies most often switched to the following companies:

  1. Mercury
  2. Progressive
  3. Elephant
  4. Liberty Mutual
  5. GAINSCO

GEICO Customer Satisfaction and Policyholder Reviews

GEICO’s policyholder reviews range from ecstatic to frustrated. More positive reviews mostly come from those who have held GEICO policies for years, if not decades. It seems GEICO usually rewards policyholders who stay with GEICO for a couple of years: Meanwhile, negative reviews had more to do with unexplained price increases or increased premiums after accidents: GEICO has an A+ rating on Better Business Bureau, but a customer service rating of just 1.2 on the same service.

GEICO Mobile App Review

GEICO was the first insurance company in America to let users quote and buy insurance policies online through their phones. As such, GEICO has been a pioneer in creating a mobile-friendly insurance experience. So it should be no surprise that GEICO’s mobile app is highly rated on both Google and Apple’s app stores, with a 4.8 out of five on both. The app allows users to access insurance ID cards, pay bills, call for roadside assistance, submit and manage claims, and manage vehicle repairs. The app also comes with GEICO’s augmented reality (AR) feature, called GEICO Explore. Using this feature, users can find restaurants, gas stations, and locate their own car through AR.

GEICO Drive Easy

For the longest time, GEICO shied away from creating a telematics app, even going so far as running ads with “SmartDogs” that poke fun at other telematics devices. But with many other competitors introducing advanced telematics apps, the pressure seems to have gotten to GEICO. GEICO introduced its own telematics app called Drive Easy in September 2019.

The app tracks your driving habits and gives you a discount based on how safe they are. Since the program’s only been out a few months, it’s currently only available in two states: Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Connecticut and Pennsylvania residents can download the app (everyone on your policy must enroll in the plan). The app then begins tracking driving habits like what time you drive, for how long you drive, how hard you brake, and how often you use your phone when you’re driving.

The app detects your driving automatically, so you don’t need to turn it on and off. If you drive late at night, drive for hours at a stretch, brake hard and often, or use your phone when you’re driving (even if a passenger is operating your phone), your discount decreases. According to GEICO’s website, if the app inaccurately logs a trip (e.g., it records a driving trip where you were just a passenger or one where you were on a bus), you can make a request for GEICO to drop the trip from your history.

Drive Easy reviews include both people who think the app makes them more responsible drivers and those who feel the app doesn’t do an accurate job in recording braking and phone usage. A lot of the reviews came from parents upset the app reprimanded them for phone usage while driving because they let kids use their phones while they drive.

Frequently Asked Questions: GEICO Car Insurance

Does GEICO have good insurance?

GEICO has relatively low rates compared to its competitors, but it has also increased drivers’ rates quite drastically if they happened to get a speeding ticket or driving violation. So if you’re a low-risk driver with a clean driving record, GEICO’s probably a good choice for you. But if you have a couple of speeding tickets or violations, you should probably shop around for a better deal.

Does GEICO have cheaper rates than Progressive, State Farm, or Allstate?

You can’t always say which insurance company will give you the lowest rate. It’s all tied to your driving record, location, age, and sex. Progressive and GEICO usually offer rates on par, while State Farm’s quotes heavily depend on which state you’re in. Meanwhile, Allstate’s rates tend to be higher, but it offers plenty of discounts to offset the price. But you don’t really know which company will give you the best rate until you compare actual quotes. You can do this on a comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare quotes from up to 20 companies at a time.

How do I know I’m getting the cheapest rates?

In short: You don’t. Each company is going to claim to give you the lowest rates possible, but you can’t really trust any of them. Instead of banking of one company to always churn out the cheapest rates, you should compare quotes across multiple companies. This may seem like a long, tiring task, but it doesn’t have to be. Consider using a quotes comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare quotes across up to 20 companies at a time. That way, you can make sure you’re getting the cheapest rates every time!

Is GEICO the cheapest car insurance in your area?

You can never rely on just one company to give you the best or the cheapest car insurance quote. Just because GEICO had an excellent deal for your friend doesn’t mean it’ll have the same deal for you. That’s why it’s essential to do your research and compare quotes among other insurance companies. This can be time-consuming, but Insurify helps you compare auto insurance quotes in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is put in some basic information about your driving profile, and you can compare up to 20 quotes at once for free!

GEICO Auto Insurance Overview

The Government Employees Insurance Company, now known as GEICO, was first founded in 1936 by Leo and Lillian Goodwin to provide insurance for government employees. Leo Goodwin had worked for several years for USAA, and as such, wanted to create his own insurance company for federal employees and certain members of the military. Over the next 80 years, GEICO underwent aggressive expansion, barely survived the stagflation of the 1970s, ran several successful ad campaigns, and became one of the biggest names in the insurance industry. GEICO has since expanded its customer base beyond federal employees and military members and now insures Americans across all 50 states.

Since 1996, GEICO has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, one of America’s most profitable organizations. Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, was an early GEICO investor who bought his first GEICO stock in 1951. Today, GEICO is America’s second-largest auto insurer, insuring over 27 million vehicles owned by over 17 million policyholders. Additionally, GEICO partners with over 30 insurance companies to also provide home, renters, life, and pet insurance, among others.
