Having trouble finding low-cost insurance coverage due to a spotty driving record? Freeway Insurance may have exactly what you need.

Since 2008, Freeway Insurance has offered car insurance to drivers across the country. It strives to offer the lowest price for a fast and easy way to obtain car insurance. The company focuses on traditionally underserved drivers, specifically Spanish speakers, and drivers deemed high-risk. These drivers include people who have to file an SR-22 or those with a history of:

Freeway Insurance is part of Confie Seguros, one of the largest privately-held insurance brokers in the United States. As such, it offers plans through Freeway and other affiliated or partnered companies. It acts like an insurance brokerage in that agents and brokers look for the best policy regardless of their affiliation with the company.

In the interest of being upfront, cheap car insurance may come with an extra cost by going through Freeway. In the event your broker or agent finds a better insurance option with a company outside of Confie, you will be required to pay a one-time broker’s fee. You may also be asked to pay a down payment. Just be sure you know how long your policy will be active with a downpayment, and pay your next bill on time. More on this below.

What does Freeway Insurance do?

Freeway Insurance mainly provides car insurance policies. However, it has expanded coverage options to include renters insurance, homeowners insurance, property insurance, life insurance, health insurance, and business insurance. For this review, we will focus on Freeway’s auto insurance offerings.

Freeway Insurance provides auto insurance policies to people in all fifty states but currently has offices in twelve. These states are:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Wisconsin

If you’re not located in these states, you can contact an agent through Freeway’s national telesales call center. You can also begin the quoting process via its website and receive a call from an agent without having to wait on hold. Agents are available to speak with both English- and Spanish-speaking customers. In fact, Freeway Insurance specializes in servicing Spanish-speaking drivers and traditionally underserved drivers.

Freeway offers several car insurance discount programs, including:

  • Good driver discount
  • Student discount
  • Military discount
  • Multi-policy discount
  • Multi-car discount

Discounts are dependent on which insurance company, partnered with or part of the Freeway Insurance family offers the best price. Be sure to ask about the discount programs offered by the recommended insurance company.

Freeway also offers bundling discounts, a roadside assistance program, and other perks and benefits depending on your policy.

Who is Freeway Insurance best for?

Hands down, the best customer fit for Freeway is a high-risk driver. If you’ve been having trouble finding insurance due to your driving record, try getting a quote from Freeway. But be sure to keep our special considerations in mind when you do. It is notoriously difficult to find an insurance company willing to take on drivers with higher risk. If you’ve had trouble finding the insurance you need, consider checking out Freeway Insurance.

Special Considerations

Freeway Insurance works a little differently than typical insurance companies like State Farm or GEICO. When you call in to receive quotes, you aren’t actually speaking to an insurance agent, but a broker. What’s the difference?

An agent works on behalf of the insurance company while a broker works on the behalf of a customer. Similar to the work we do here at Insurify, brokers can compare rates for their customers. They also work to ensure customers receive the best policy, at the best price.

Unlike Insurify, however, brokers are paid a fee for finding the best insurance company. This fee is paid by the customer and not by the insurance company, which means you could pay more overall for coverage. With Freeway Insurance, you may or may not be required to pay this fee.

It all depends on whether the company with the best rate is part of Freeway’s insurance family. If a company outside the Freeway family is found to have the best quote, drivers will be required to pay a one-time broker’s fee. Be sure to keep this in mind when obtaining your quote…and be sure to ask about broker’s fees.

After you receive your free quote, ask for the direct line of the broker and end the call. It’s best to do some investigating into the company that the broker has recommended. You’ll want to get a feel for the company, especially through reviewing the technology the company uses and its online reviews, before you buy.

Freeway Insurance’s online customer experience

When obtaining insurance through Freeway, you will be required to fill out an online form.

After submitting the form, you will receive a phone call from an agent who will verify your information. After that, you will be directed to a broker/agent in your state. The agent will find the best price from either Freeway or its partners.

From there you can decide to accept the quote, or you can inquire about the other quoting data the agent has uncovered. Again, be sure to ask about the broker’s fees and any other fees involved in purchasing the recommended policy, and inquire about any fees that might reoccur at renewal time.

When I went through the Freeway flow, I received a quote slightly less expensive than my current carrier, though also containing a one-time fee. The entire process, from filling out the form to asking questions after receiving my quote, took all of 15 minutes. The overall process was, honestly, a little clunky, because I spoke to two different people on the phone. However, both representatives were considerate, kind, and helpful.

Freeway Insurance Reviews: Here’s what customers are saying…

Freeway Insurance has received many reviews online, but not every review has been sparkling. It seems that customers, without knowledge of how Freeway works, are very confused to discover they’re paying a broker’s fee or working with a different insurance company than they initially started with.

There are standout brokers and agents that customers love. This is well documented on Yelp:

Over at the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Freeway Insurance gets an A+ rating. Customer reviews equate to only one star and a host of complaints are archived.

The bad news: customers are complaining about unclear sales and billing practices. The good news: complaints are responded to by the company and in many cases refunds were issued to the customer.
