We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

If you have infractions or moving violations on your driving record, you may have a hard time qualifying for auto insurance. That’s where non-standard car insurance can help. This coverage is designed for high-risk drivers.

AssuranceAmerica offers this type of insurance, which can be a perk, but it isn’t widely available across the U.S. The company is based in Atlanta and started in 1998. Aside from offering car insurance, the company also donates 5% of earnings to help fight homelessness.

If you’re looking for minimum coverage as a high-risk driver, AssuranceAmerica is an option. However, you should be aware that AssuranceAmerica reviews tend to be negative and that customer ratings tend to be low.[1]

Here’s what you need to know about AssuranceAmerica.

Quick Facts
  • AssuranceAmerica provides non-standard car insurance to high-risk drivers.

  • The company offers car insurance coverage in only 10 states.

  • The company’s website offers limited information, so talking to a local agent is your best bet.

How AssuranceAmerica stacks up

AssuranceAmerica car insurance may be helpful for drivers who don’t qualify for standard coverage with other companies. The company offers non-standard insurance, with rates that are typically higher than those from traditional insurers.

AssuranceAmerica also doesn’t advertise any discounts, but getting in touch with an agent can help you understand all your options.

Here’s how AssuranceAmerica stacks up compared to other insurance companies.

Average cost of AssuranceAmerica auto insurance

The average cost of AssuranceAmerica is $120 per month for liability insurance and $210 per month for full coverage. These costs are slightly higher than the national average of $104 per month for liability insurance and $213 per month for full coverage.

Both the state you live in and your driving record affect your car insurance premiums.

AssuranceAmerica insurance reviews and ratings

Customer reviews are an important part of the vetting process when deciding which insurance company you want to work with. Here, you can see AssuranceAmerica insurance reviews and ratings to get a better idea of customer satisfaction and common complaints.

AssuranceAmerica customer reviews

AssuranceAmerica has fewer reviews than some other major insurers. For example, on Trustpilot, there are no reviews yet.

But on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website, the company has 35 reviews, and on Yelp, it has 57 reviews.[2] On both sites, AssuranceAmerica has only one star.

To get an idea of what people are saying, here are some real reviews.

From a recent one-star review, there’s an ominous tone hinting at not having a great experience.

Another comment on the BBB website shows frustration at the claims process and handling of payment and policy.

AssuranceAmerica ratings

AssuranceAmerica isn’t quite on the radar of third-party rating systems. The ratings below typically show a company’s financial strength and more, but AssuranceAmerica isn’t rated, leaving little information for consumers.

However, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners has a complaint index, tracking the frequency of complaints associated with the company. AssuranceAmerica has a much higher number of complaints relative to other insurance companies.

  • AM Best: Not rated

  • J.D. Power: Not rated

  • Standard & Poor’s: Not rated

  • Moody’s: Not rated

  • NAIC Complaint Index: Higher than average[3]

AssuranceAmerica auto insurance rates by driving history

Your driving history is one of the first things insurance companies look at during the underwriting process. The idea is that your past driving may predict your future. If you have a clean record, you’ll pay lower premiums. If your driving history includes a speeding ticket, an at-fault accident, or a DUI conviction, you’ll pay more for car insurance coverage.

Here, you can see average AssuranceAmerica quotes based on driving history. You can also compare quotes with a clean record versus various incidents and look at liability only versus full coverage.

Driving HistoryAverage Quote: Full CoverageAverage Quote: Liability Only
Clean record$210$120
With speeding ticket$276$158
With at-fault accident$283$162
With DUI$326$186

AssuranceAmerica car insurance cost by age

Your age is another factor insurers consider when assessing risk. For example, teen drivers pay significantly higher average car insurance rates than other age groups. This is due to a lack of experience paired with higher rates of risky driving behavior.

Fortunately, premiums go down as people age before climbing again once a person reaches their 70s. This is due to increased risk from reduced faculties as well as the increased likelihood of senior drivers requiring medical care following an accident.

The table below shows the average quotes from AssuranceAmerica based on age.

Age GroupAverage Monthly Quote
Teens$220
20s$138
30s$102
40s$89
50s$83
60s$86
70s$96

AssuranceAmerica car insurance discounts

Many car insurance companies provide an array of discounts for customers to help lower costs. However, AssuranceAmerica doesn’t advertise any particular discounts on its website, nor does it offer various insurance products that could enable bundling opportunities.

This doesn’t necessarily mean there are no discounts available, however. That’s why it’s best to contact an insurance agent to see whether there are any and whether you’re eligible.

AssuranceAmerica vs. other insurance companies

AssuranceAmerica is one of the many insurance companies on the market that may be a good choice for you, particularly if you qualify as a high-risk driver. Though it offers non-standard auto insurance coverage and may be more niche, there are competitors that offer the same. That’s why it’s a good idea to review and compare multiple options before making a decision.

Below, you’ll see how AssuranceAmerica compares with 21st Century and American Alliance, based on average quotes for liability and full-coverage car insurance.

  • Our editorial team spent 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. Criteria are weighted by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 5 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. We update ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: We use data from AM Best, S&P, Moody's, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 20,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also considered third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the United States, as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify identified the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share to score availability and reach.

AssuranceAmerica vs. 21st Century

21st Century is an auto insurance company that’s been around since 1958. One of the major ways that 21st Century is different from AssuranceAmerica is the abundance of discounts it offers.

Through 21st Century, drivers may be eligible for a good driver discount, superior driver discount, good student discount, and mature driver discount. Plus, if you have proper anti-theft systems in place or insure multiple vehicles, you may qualify for even more discounts.

Students and mature drivers on a budget looking to save may get more out of 21st Century. However, if you live in one of the 10 states that AssuranceAmerica serves and find more affordable coverage with the company, it could be a better fit, even without the additional discounts.

AssuranceAmerica vs. American Alliance

American Alliance is another insurer that offers auto insurance coverage for high-risk drivers.

American Alliance is a BBB-accredited business with a rating of A- but also has more negative reviews than AssuranceAmerica.[4] The company also offers a handful of discounts, including for defensive driving, prior coverage, and having multiple auto insurance policies with the company.

When it comes to claims, American Alliance allows drivers to submit a claim online by answering a few questions. When reviewing the AssuranceAmerica FAQs, it appears that the only way to report a claim is by phone.

If you’re insuring multiple vehicles or prioritize being able to handle claims online, American Alliance may be the better option in this scenario. The company also works with independent agents who may be able to guide you.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
