If you’re shopping for car insurance, you’ve probably come across Progressive and Liberty Mutual — two of the largest insurance companies in the U.S. Progressive ranks No. 2 by national market share, and Liberty Mutual ranks No. 5, reflecting their strong industry standings.

Both insurers are popular choices for drivers nationwide. But Liberty Mutual has more coverage options and better customer satisfaction scores, while Progressive stands out for affordability and telematics availability.

In this insurance company comparison, we’ll take a closer look at Liberty Mutual and Progressive to compare rates, coverage options, discounts, and overall customer experience.

Quick Facts
  • Liberty Mutual has higher rates than Progressive but offers more coverage for newer vehicles, like gap insurance.

  • Both insurers can likely pay claims on time and in full.

  • Progressive Snapshot users save an average of $322 each year. Liberty Mutual RightTrack may save up to 30%, but Snapshot is more widely available.

Liberty Mutual vs. Progressive: Our verdict

Liberty Mutual may be the better choice for drivers who want broader coverage options and extra protection for newer vehicles. Progressive might be the right fit if you’re looking for wider telematics availability and lower average rates.

Both companies demonstrate financial stability and strong customer service. Progressive holds a slightly higher AM Best financial strength rating and has fewer customer complaints than Liberty Mutual. But Liberty Mutual scores higher in J.D. Power surveys for customer service and claims processing.[1] [2]

Before deciding, compare personalized insurance quotes from both companies to find the best fit for your budget and coverage needs.

Why we picked this company

Liberty Mutual offers several coverage options that make it a strong choice for newer vehicles. Pros
  • High rating in J.D. Power claims satisfaction study

  • Many types of insurance coverage options

  • Ability to pay into deductible fund

Cons
  • Higher premiums than Progressive

  • Limited availability for telematics program

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 55,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

Liberty Mutual RightTrack vs. Progressive Snapshot

Both Liberty Mutual and Progressive reward safe driving through telematics programs that track driving habits such as speed, braking, and phone use. Unlike pay-per-mile insurance, usage-based insurance programs focus on behavior rather than distance.

Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack can save drivers up to 30%, while Progressive’s Snapshot averages $322 in yearly savings. Although Snapshot has broader availability, RightTrack’s clear savings percentages may be more appealing to consumers than a dollar amount that can vary based on multiple factors.

With auto insurance premiums rising nationwide, policyholders are looking for ways to save. Telematics programs help modern drivers lower their insurance rates by rewarding safe driving. Below is an overview of the telematics programs with Liberty Mutual and Progressive.

  • Which car insurance company offers the cheapest insurance?

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
