Agent Tip: Does liability-only insurance offer enough coverage?

Mallory Mooney

Mallory Mooney

Director of Sales and Service

In Vermont, you need more than the state-minimum required car insurance if you want financial protection for your vehicle in case of a car accident, storm damage, or theft. Without collision and comprehensive coverage, you’ll have to pay for any of your vehicle repairs on your own. These costs can add up quickly. Purchasing a full-coverage policy is a good way to protect your finances.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Vermont: State Farm

State Farm offers the cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Vermont, with an average cost of $31 per month. This is lower than Vermont’s average full-coverage insurance rate of $128 per month.

Full-coverage policies typically include higher liability coverage limits, as well as comprehensive and collision coverage to protect your vehicle from accidents, severe weather, vandalism, theft, and other risks.

A full-coverage policy’s comprehensive coverage component can help protect your vehicle from risks in the Green Mountain State, like hail from summer storms and deer-vehicle collisions on the highway.[1] You may also want to consider additional coverages like gap insurance if you have an auto loan from a lender.

Below, you can see full-coverage car insurance rates from the cheapest car insurance companies in Vermont.

Car insurance costs in Vermont had the 8th-highest premium increase in the U.S. in 2025, with average premiums rising 3%. This increase is in part due to a higher number of claims and a higher average claim cost driven by catastrophic storms, rising repair costs, inflation, and more.[2]

The average annual cost of car insurance in Vermont is $741 for liability insurance and $1,531 for full coverage. That said, Insurify estimates that the average cost of coverage in the state will be $1,595 by the end of 2026.

Vermont car insurance quotes with bad credit: State Farm

Vermont law allows insurers to use credit history information when writing policies, meaning that your credit history can affect your rates. While insurers can’t deny you coverage solely based on your credit history, they can use it as part of a larger credit-based insurance score to determine coverage.

Drivers with bad credit often pay more than drivers with good credit, but affordable rates are still available.

Compare the cheapest liability insurance rates for drivers with bad credit in Vermont.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
