Agent Tip: Is liability-only insurance enough in Minnesota?

Austin Moyers

Austin Moyers

Linkedin

Licensed P&C Insurance Agent and Sales Manager, Insurify

I almost always advise my clients to buy more liability insurance than their state’s minimum, and Minnesota’s property damage minimum is a good example of why. Minnesota only requires $10,000 for property damage coverage, but damage from one severe accident can easily cost twice that amount. It’s a good idea to buy as much liability coverage as you can comfortably afford.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Minnesota: State Farm

Full-coverage auto insurance in Minnesota typically includes collision, comprehensive, and liability coverage that at least meets the state’s minimums.

If you’re among the roughly 25% of Minnesota drivers who lease or finance their vehicles, your lender will probably require you to buy full-coverage car insurance.

Full coverage can be a good idea in Minnesota even if you don’t have to buy it. You may want the extra financial protection, since you have to deal with severe winter weather, more than 1,200 collisions with deer annually, and more than 150 hailstorms per year.

On average, full-coverage insurance in Minnesota costs $184 per month. The cheapest full-coverage insurer in Minnesota is State Farm, with rates that average $95 per month.

The below rates in Minnesota are estimated rates current as of: Sunday, May 10 at 5:00 PM PDT.

Cost Evaluation, State Farm
I have been with State Farm for over 66 years. Times are changing now; both my wife and I are retired, driving much less, and living on fixed incomes. We have 3 autos now, the oldest being a 1995 GMC truck, plus our house is insured with State Farm. I need to evaluate our expenses. Insurance is our largest cost.

Hidden strategies!!!
Well, no issues for years, other than the cost seems high for an old lady who drives a few miles per day and 150 miles on holidays. Until one day, I had to pay $45.00 to be towed to my mechanic one block from my home, instead of the nearest mechanic 16 miles from my home! I believe it should be my choice!

Incredible coverage at a high price.
Progressive is awesome with claims. I hit a deer a few years ago and getting the coverage I paid for was hassle-free and very easy. I also had to have my car towed once and they were able to send a tow truck my way very quickly and without a lot of effort. However, you PAY for Progressive. In my research, it's definitely one of the most expensive options no matter what coverage level you're at. This wasn't always the case. I have had Progressive for the majority of my time driving (30 years) and their pricing used to be competitive. It does not seem to be anymore. I have recently switched to State Farm solely because of cost.

I was charged $10.00 for canceling my old policy with Progressive and found a cheaper rate with another broker, again with Progressive. When I called Progressive to make sure my old policy was canceled and my new policy went into effect on 5/1/26, the agent I spoke with said I needed to pay a $10.00 cancellation fee. He said it was a new policy with Progressive! So I paid with my debit card and gave him all my info, including my CVV code. A day later, I had all these fraudulent charges amounting to almost $1,000 on my debit card! My bank was quick to notice and declined most of the charges, but again I'm inconvenienced waiting for my new card. I don't know if this incident with talking to the Progressive guy and giving him my debit card info has anything to do with the fraudulent charges on my account, but it sure is fishy that a day later after talking to him, this happens! He even sent me a receipt of $10.00 to my email! Was this legitimate? Do you guys charge $29.00 to cancel policies? If not, you owe me a refund and you better check out more carefully the people that supposedly work for your company!

Minnesota is a no-fault insurance state. This means that in the event of an accident, your insurance company will cover your costs, regardless of who caused the crash. No-fault insurance states typically have higher rates than at-fault insurance states, since drivers often need to carry additional coverage besides liability.

Here are Minnesota’s mandatory minimum-coverage insurance requirements:

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
