Good news for Indiana drivers: The rate you pay for car insurance is far below the national average. The average rate for liability-only car insurance in Indiana is $72 per month, and the average rate for full coverage is $144 per month. The U.S. national average for liability insurance is $104 per month, and full coverage is $204 per month.

Car insurance rates could be cheaper in Indiana partly because the state has a relatively low population density and few uninsured drivers compared to other states.[1] But securing your own cheap rates isn’t guaranteed. It depends on your driving record, age, gender, vehicle type, and more.

Here’s how to find affordable car insurance in Indiana.

Quick Facts
  • Auto-Owners, State Farm, and USAA offer the lowest rates in Indiana.

  • Indiana drivers must carry at least 25/50/25 in liability insurance.

  • GEICO has the best car insurance for discounts in Indiana.

  • Our editorial team spent more than 350 hours developing the Insurify Quality (IQ) Score and scoring insurance companies. The IQ Score objectively analyzes and calculates a score for insurers using more than 15 crucial criteria. The team weighted criteria by importance to the consumer — factors such as customer reviews and affordability influence the score more than availability and third-party ratings.

We rate each company on a 1 to 10 scale based on five categories: financial ratings, customer satisfaction, affordability, customer support and transparency, and availability. Insurify updates ratings once a year or as more recent information becomes available.

    • Third-party financial ratings: Insurify uses data from AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and more to compare insurance companies’ credit and ability to pay out future claims.
    • Customer satisfaction: To calculate this score, Insurify analyzed more than 28,000 customer reviews across 155 car insurance companies. We also consider third-party ratings from J.D. Power, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and Trustpilot.
    • Affordability: Our data scientists analyzed more than 90 million real-time auto insurance rates from our partners across the U.S., as well as available discounts, to calculate an affordability score.
    • Customer support and transparency: This measures coverage options, ease of claims filing, and the insurer's transparency surrounding discounts, coverages, and claims process.
    • Availability and reach: Insurify scores availability and reach by identifying the number of states in which insurers offer coverage and company size by market share.

I have been with USAA for over 60 years. Obviously, I've been very happy. Since I don't drive very far, I have been seeing advertisements for lower prices. However, I have no plans of leaving USAA.

Disappointing and inflexible service

My experience with this company has been disappointing, especially this second time around. I would suggest considering other options. From my recent interactions, they have been dismissive and argumentative. I have already started finalizing my next premium with another company. I'm perplexed as to how they receive praise when they treat clients in this manner.

The only reason I'm using GEICO is due to my association with the USAF and having no claims in 30 years. When I served in the USAF, Geico was good. You're not the cheapest, but I wanted to give you a chance to earn my business. Now that I'm retired, I've been with GEICO for a year or more. I don't plan on having an accident, but it could happen. I spend more time walking and riding a bicycle.

Why we picked this company

GEICO is a great option if you’re looking for discounts. The company offers more than a dozen discounts, including savings for military personnel, federal employees, smart students, safe drivers, bundling policies, going on emergency deployment, insuring a new vehicle, insuring a car with daytime running lights and anti-lock brakes, and many others.

GEICO only offers a small selection of endorsements, so it’s not the best option if you want to customize your policy. Additionally, J.D. Power rates GEICO below average for overall claims satisfaction.

Pros
  • Robust mobile app

  • Rates are cheaper than Indiana state average

Cons
  • Limited endorsement options

  • Below-average claims satisfaction rating[2]

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Indiana

The rate you pay for car insurance depends on your age, gender, driving history, location, and more. Some of these factors are outside of your control, but here are some ways you can reduce your car insurance rates:

  • Look for discounts. Most car insurance companies offer discounts that can reduce your premium. Before signing a policy, be sure to contact the insurer to learn what discounts you may be eligible for. You may uncover more options than you expect.

  • Bundle your policies. You can often qualify for savings when you bundle two or more insurance policies from the same company. Bundle your car insurance with your renters insurance or homeowners insurance and see how much you can save.

  • Choose higher deductibles. Choosing a higher deductible often lowers your premium because you’re taking on more of the risk yourself. If you opt for a higher deductible, just be sure it isn’t so high you can’t afford to pay it if you need to file a claim.

  • Shop around. Before you purchase car insurance, shop around and compare rates from several different insurance companies. Comparing rates will help you find the most affordable policy for your situation.

Car insurance requirements in Indiana

Car insurance is a legal requirement in Indiana, and you must carry a minimum amount of coverage to register your car and drive legally. Indiana requires drivers to carry at least 25/50/25 in personal liability insurance, and you can see what’s included in those requirements in the table below.[3]

Coverage
Minimum Requirements
Bodily injury liability$25,000 for one person’s injuries in an accident / $50,000 for all injuries in an accident
Property damage liability$25,000 for all property damage in an accident

While state law requires drivers to have at least minimum coverage, you may seek to enhance your insurance with optional coverages like the following:

  • illustration card https://a.storyblok.com/f/162273/x/73ee7a876e/repair.svg

    Gap insurance

If you lease or finance your vehicle and it gets totaled, gap insurance will cover the difference between the car’s diminished value and the amount you still owe. This endorsement is beneficial if you have negative equity in the car.

    Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance covers the cost of some basic roadside vehicle services, such as flat-tire changes, fuel delivery, battery replacements, and towing up to a certain distance.

    Accident forgiveness

Accident forgiveness coverage waives your first at-fault accident so it doesn’t increase your premium. Many insurers only offer accident forgiveness to drivers who have been claim-free or violation-free for a certain length of time.

    Indiana Auto Insurance Plan

This plan is exclusively available to high-risk drivers who’ve been denied car insurance because of certain risk factors such as their credit history or driving record.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

Indiana drivers with incidents on their record, such as speeding tickets and at-fault accidents, often pay higher rates for car insurance than people with a clean record. More serious violations, like driving under the influence (DUI), usually have the biggest effect on car insurance rates and can cause insurers to drop you altogether.

In the sections that follow, you’ll see how different incidents affect your car insurance rates in different ways.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket: Auto-Owners

Getting pulled over for speeding might seem like a harmless offense, but it can cause your car insurance premiums to go up. The average cost of car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket in Indiana is $209 per month for full coverage insurance and $104 for liability-only insurance.

Here, you can see how liability coverage rates from different insurers compare for drivers with clean records and drivers with a speeding ticket.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an at-fault accident: Auto-Owners

If you cause an accident, your car insurance premium will probably go up, unless you added accident forgiveness to your policy. Your premium may even increase after a not-at-fault collision, depending on your insurer. This is because insurers see your involvement in an accident as an indication you’re more likely to be involved in another accident in the future.

Drivers with an accident on their record pay an average of $103 per month for liability coverage and $207 for full coverage.

Cheapest car insurance for teens: Auto-Owners

Teen drivers typically pay some of the highest rates for car insurance. This is because data shows that young drivers ages 1619 have a higher accident rate than drivers in any other age group.[4] Teen drivers are also more likely to make critical driving errors that can cause serious accidents, such as distracted driving.

While it’s difficult for teens to avoid high car insurance rates, they can lower their car insurance premiums in a few ways. For example, staying insured on a parent’s policy is usually much cheaper than getting an individual policy. You can also look for car insurance companies that offer smart student discounts or safe driver discount programs.

The table below shows the cheapest car insurance companies for teens in Indiana with their own insurance policies.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
