At Insurify, our goal is to help customers compare insurance products and find the best policy for them. We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.
We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

The average cost of auto insurance in Hawaii is $88, substantially cheaper than the national average of $151. This could partly be because Hawaii currently has one of the lowest required minimums for bodily injury coverage, at $20,000 per person.
But the state legislature is considering increasing the minimum coverage requirements for liability car insurance, which could lead to increases in auto policy premiums on the islands.
Here’s what you should know about finding cheap coverage in the Aloha State.
State Farm, Allstate, and Midvale Home & Auto have the cheapest car insurance in Hawaii.
Since Hawaii is a no-fault state, you have to file a claim for any bodily injuries with your insurance company, even when you’re in an accident you didn’t cause.
Hawaii law prohibits the use of credit ratings to determine auto insurance premiums.
3 of the cheapest car insurance companies in Hawaii
The cost of car insurance depends on a variety of factors, including your age, where you live, and the type of car you drive. The right car insurance policy for you will depend on your individual situation and budget.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Hawaii
Insurance companies base car insurance premiums on a variety of factors, including your age, your gender, your ZIP code, the type of car you drive, how often you drive, and your driving record. To get the cheapest car insurance coverage in Hawaii, consider the following tips:
Keep a clean driving record. The cleaner your driving record, the better your premium. If you’ve been in an accident or had another traffic violation, you can expect your insurance rate to go up.
Drive a safe car. Some insurance companies offer discounts if you drive a car with quality safety features.
Increase your deductible. Requesting a higher deductible can lower your monthly costs significantly. For example, going from a $200 to a $500 deductible can reduce the cost of your collision and comprehensive coverage by 15%–30%, according to the Insurance Information Institute.[1]
Comparison shop. The cost of auto insurance varies between insurers. By comparing quotes from three or more companies, you can find the insurance that best fits your needs and budget.
Cheapest liability-only car insurance quotes in Hawaii
Nearly every state requires a minimum amount of car insurance, including Hawaii. Liability-only car insurance is composed of bodily injury and property damage liability.
Bodily injury covers the other person’s medical expenses if you cause a car accident. Property damage coverage pays for damages that you cause to someone’s vehicle or other property, such as a sign or fence. Liability-only coverage doesn’t cover your vehicle if you cause an accident.
In Hawaii, the minimum level of coverage also includes personal injury protection (PIP), which pays for your injuries after an accident, regardless of fault. Liability-only insurance in Hawaii costs $64 per month, on average. The following table provides the lowest average quotes for liability insurance in Hawaii.
Insurance Company ▲▼ | Average Monthly Quote ▲▼ |
---|---|
State Farm | $40 |
Allstate | $43 |
Midvale Home & Auto | $68 |
Cheapest full-coverage car insurance quotes in Hawaii
If you want additional protection for you and your vehicle in Hawaii, you can purchase full-coverage car insurance. Full-coverage car insurance includes liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage. While liability-only insurance covers damages to the other driver’s vehicle, comprehensive insurance covers your vehicle if you’re in an accident.
Hawaii drivers pay an average of $111 per month for full coverage. The table below provides average monthly rate quotes for the cheapest companies in Hawaii.

State Farm | $56 |
Allstate | $61 |
Midvale Home & Auto | $131 |
Your age affects how much you pay for car insurance.
Teens and young drivers pay some of the highest insurance rates because they have less experience on the road and a higher risk of getting into an accident.
Insurance rates tend to decrease around age 25 and then increase again around age 70. As drivers age, they can experience impairments that affect how they drive. Senior drivers 70 and older also have a higher fatal crash rate compared to middle-aged drivers.[2] This creates more risk for insurers, which leads to higher insurance rates.

Car insurance requirements in Hawaii
If you want to own a car in Hawaii, you must have car insurance. If you’re caught without insurance, you’ll have to surrender your registration and license plate to the country director of finance, and you won’t be able to drive.
Hawaii is a no-fault state, which means if you’re in an accident, your insurance company will cover the bills for your injuries up to your personal injury protection (PIP) limit. But “no fault” only applies to injuries, not property. If you’re in an accident that isn’t your fault, your PIP insurance will cover your medical bills, but the at-fault driver is responsible for any damages to your vehicle or property.[3]
The table below lists the state-required minimum insurance coverage.
Coverage ▲▼ | Minimum Requirements ▲▼ |
---|---|
Personal injury protection | $10,000 per person |
Bodily injury liability | $20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident |
Property damage liability | $10,000 per accident |
For additional protection, you can purchase optional insurance coverage, including:
Collision coverage
Collision insurance covers the cost of damages to your car if you get in a collision with another vehicle or hit an object, such as a guardrail or fence, and it’s your fault.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance covers damages to your car that aren’t caused by a collision, such as theft, fire, hail, a falling tree, or some other hazard.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Uninsured motorist coverage protects you if you’re in an accident with a driver who doesn’t have insurance or if you’re in a hit-and-run. Underinsured coverage reimburses you if the other driver doesn’t have enough insurance.
Cheapest car insurance in Hawaii by driving record
Driving incidents — such as speeding tickets, driving under the influence, and at-fault accidents — can cause your insurance premiums to go up. If you have any of these on your record, insurance companies typically charge you more because they see you as a higher risk.
For example, Hawaii drivers with a clean record pay an average of $73 per month for a liability policy. But that rate increases to $175 per month for Hawaii drivers with a DUI.

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
