Shady

I got full coverage online, and when I had an accident, they said their systems were down, and I couldn’t log into my account for over 12 hours. When I finally was able to get into my account, it showed I only had liability, and my financed car was not covered.

Unethical

I'm not sure what happened. I paid for a year, but somehow 4 months in, they canceled my policy without notifying me. I only found out when I received a check and realized I had been driving around without insurance for a whole month. Not cool at all.

The company also provides standard coverage policies. Today, Direct Auto sells car, motorcycle, and term life insurance, car insurance in Mexico, roadside assistance, and vehicle protection plans.

Direct Auto operates in just 16 states. The company has an A+ rating from AM Best for financial and credit strength but nearly 35 times the number of expected complaints in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Customer Complaint Index.

Pros
  • Drivers 55 and older can qualify for a senior citizen discount by completing an accident-prevention course

  • Homeowner discounts, multi-policy discounts, and multi-car discounts available

  • Roadside assistance and emergency protection plans available

Cons
  • Not all products and discounts available in all states

  • Many negative customer reviews and complaints

  • May not be the best option for drivers with clean records

How to get the cheapest car insurance in Alabama

Many factors influence how much you pay for car insurance coverage in Alabama. If you’re curious about how to snag affordable car insurance in Alabama, consider these tips:

  • Drive safely. A clean driving record is key — avoid accidents and traffic violations to show insurance companies you aren’t likely to file claims.

  • Raise your deductible. Assess whether higher collision and comprehensive deductibles suit your financial situation, as a higher deductible leads to lower premiums.

  • Bundle policies. Maximize savings by bundling multiple policies (like home or life insurance) with a single insurance company.

  • Look into discounts. Ask about discounts tied to safety features, like anti-theft devices or airbags.

  • Shop around. Compare quotes from different insurers to see which company can offer you the amount of coverage you need for the best price.

Cheapest car insurance in Alabama by driving record

Some driving infractions can increase your insurance premiums significantly due to the concern that you’re more likely to file an auto insurance claim. These incidents include at-fault car accidents, speeding tickets, driving under the influence (DUI), and other moving violations. But some violations have a greater effect — if you’re convicted of a DUI, your company may not renew your policy.[5]

In Alabama, drivers with a clean record spend an average of $61 on a liability policy, while drivers with a DUI spend an average of $110 per month.

  • No. Alabama is an at-fault state. Drivers who cause accidents, or carry the majority of the fault for an accident, are responsible for compensating other parties for injuries and property damage.[6]

  • Alabama requires insurance companies to include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in every policy they sell in the state, although drivers can opt out by rejecting it in writing.

But it’s a good idea to have UM/UIM coverage, which can help pay for your damages and medical costs if someone driving without insurance or with too little insurance causes an accident. It can also pay for costs associated with a hit-and-run accident.

  • In Alabama, 14.2% of drivers are uninsured, according to data from a 2022 Insurance Information Institute report.[7]

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
