Cheapest liability-only car insurance in Washington: State Farm

You must have a minimum amount of liability coverage to drive legally in Washington. The state requires drivers to have at least 25/50/10 liability coverage.

Sticking with liability-only insurance can save you money. An average minimum coverage policy costs 74% less than an average full-coverage policy, according to Insurify data. But liability policies don’t offer as much protection because they don’t include comprehensive or collision insurance.

The table below shows the cheapest insurers for liability-only coverage in Washington, according to Insurify data.

The below rates in Washington are estimated rates current as of: Monday, March 9 at 12:00 PM PDT.

Agent Tip: Is liability-only insurance enough in Washington?

Washington’s minimum liability limits usually won’t cover the full cost of a serious accident. The cost of totaling another driver’s car would likely exceed the state’s $10,000 minimum coverage limit. You’d have to pay out of pocket for anything over your insurance limits.

Consider increasing your coverage limits for extra protection. You can also opt for full-coverage car insurance. Full coverage includes liability coverage, as well as comprehensive and collision insurance for you and your vehicle.

Cheapest full-coverage car insurance in Washington: State Farm

Washington drivers pay an average of $161 per month for full-coverage car insurance. Full coverage can be expensive, but you can save money by choosing the right insurer.

Lenders generally require you to buy a full-coverage policy, which is good to know, because 29% of Washington vehicles are either leased or financed. Lenders want to protect their investments from threats, like the state’s frequent wildfires and floods.

The table below shows the companies with the cheapest full-coverage rates in Washington, according to Insurify data.

I left State Farm thinking perhaps I could find a better price, now that I don't drive as much. I switched to Progressive. Progressive offered me a great deal, but after signing with them, they began immediately to raise their rates. I contacted them and was told the original offer was a promotion and that it was described in the fine print. I have looked back several times and can find no fine print stating that. I will return to State Farm.

I have been insured with State Farm for over 30 years, even though they keep increasing my payments. In August, I had a slight fender bender that was not my fault, and no one at State Farm would help me until late November when I stopped in, once again, to see if the other party had filed a claim. A young man, whom I had never talked to before, told me we could file a claim ourselves. I was astounded, and within a month, it was settled.

Washington car insurance requirements

Washington state law requires drivers to have a minimum amount of liability insurance. Liability coverage helps pay for any damage you cause to other people and their property. To drive legally in Washington, you must have:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident

  • Property damage liability coverage: $10,000 per accident

Washington also requires insurance companies to offer personal injury protection (PIP). You don’t have to buy it, but you must decline the coverage with your insurer. If you don’t decline it, your insurer will automatically add it to your policy.[3]

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 190 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
