How Long Is the Lookback Period for a DUI in Hawaii?

There is a good chance that if you have multiple DUIs within a short period of time, you will receive harsher penalties. This is mainly due to DUI violations being considered priorable offenses. To reward drivers who manage to keep a clean driving record after their incident, some states have a lookback period. During this period, the state can count previous DUI occurrences against you, but once you are past the lookback period, they will no longer be considered.

Although your auto insurance rates for a DUI in Hawaii will shoot up, the lookback period is one of the shortest across the country. Currently, DUIs will be considered on your driving record for five years. However, several offenses within the five-year window can result in longer lookback periods and harsher penalties.

Hawaii DUI Penalties

Although Hawaii has penalties for DUIs, the state tries to incorporate measures other than just fines and jail time. For example, first-time DUI violators will have to pay a fine of up to $1,000, but they typically won't face any jail time. Instead, they will be asked to complete 72 hours of community service and pay two $25 fees, one toward a neurotrauma special fund and one toward a trauma system special fund.
As seen in drivers with three offenses, there still isn't a big weight put behind jail time, as they will spend at most 30 days incarcerated. However, the community service hours required are increased to as much as 240 hours. There is also the possibility of the driver having their vehicle impounded.
