Finding an online auto insurance quote is easy enough, but wading through the number of tools out there can be exhausting. Which tools are legit? Do I have to pay anything? Will I be hounded by salespeople if I give them my information? What’s the user experience like? It’s these things that can separate the average shopping tools from the great ones.

LendingTree’s auto quote-comparison tool is QuoteWizard, a legitimate, free resource that links you with up to four auto insurance partners at once. While LendingTree is a solid company, Insurify lets you see 20 actual quotes in exchange for all your hard work. But there’s much more to these two companies than just the endgame. So let’s dig in!

What is LendingTree?

LendingTree is an online lending marketplace that allows borrowers to connect with various lenders for personal loans, mortgages, auto insurance, and more. It also offers a comparison-shopping tool that purports to match you with car insurance quotes. QuoteWizard is the LendingTree brand that assists with LendingTree’s quote-comparison offerings.

LendingTree has one of the largest networks of lenders in the nation. Besides offering loan sourcing and quote-comparison tools, it provides educational resources that help users acquire loan services and meet their financial goals. These goals include finding a credit card, getting out of debt, and securing insurance (to name a few).

How does LendingTree work?

Because the site offers comparison tools for multiple products, getting to the auto insurance comparison tool quickly is key. From click the Insurance icon.

You’ll then select the Auto Insurance icon to begin searching for great rates. Note: You can click the Insurance Bundles icon to bundle auto and other insurance for a discount. If you choose not to bundle initially, QuoteWizard asks if you want to bundle later in the process.

From this point, you’ll complete a series of questions about your car and your driving history. What is the year, make, and model? Have you had any accidents? DUIs? Tickets? Some comparison tools can drive you crazy with questions because you have no idea how far along you are in the process. QuoteWizard solves this by including a status bar at the top of the page.

Finally, QuoteWizard asks for your name, address, phone number, and email address. While some calculators let you fudge a phone number to avoid phone calls, this one seemingly knows when you’ve given it legitimate contact information. After I clicked submit, QuoteWizard called and texted me, very intent on helping me find an auto insurance partner.

Simultaneously, the site offered up four possible insurance partners with corresponding selections to view rate. Disappointingly, this button redirected me to partner sites where I’d have to begin the process of entering my information all over again. Ah, well. At least I was given four possible partner names. I’m much closer to finding cheap insurance than I was before!

In all, the LendingTree/QuoteWizard experience was easy, but ultimately didn’t yield any real quotes. Some tools add helpful information to the questions to make you feel more at ease about answering them (for example, telling me why my marital status is important). QuoteWizard did none of that. It was a very dry experience and gave me very little to show in exchange for my valuable information.

LendingTree Reviews: Here’s what customers are saying…

QuoteWizard is owned and used by LendingTree as its auto insurance comparison tool. Though QuoteWizard has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, a wealth of the 27 complaints to BBB had to do with representatives of the company contacting customers without their consent—sometimes repeatedly.

However, the company responds to all of these complaints with explicit directions for removing their information from the call list, a welcome move.

LendingTree itself has excellent ratings and reviews regarding its loan services and loan offers, so there’s hope that some of this can trickle down into the way they help people shop for auto loans through QuoteWizard.

Overall, user perception of QuoteWizard is not good. If you are going to give a site your personal information, you expect something in return besides being bombarded by sales calls. When you acquire a company—like LendingTree did QuoteWizard—it can take a long time to get both brand experiences in sync.

LendingTree vs. Insurify: The Facts

One thing that is noticeably missing from LendingTree’s QuoteWizard tool is the ability to jump around to different quote information mid-progress. Insurify has an immersive 360-degree experience, where at any point in the car insurance quote comparison progression, you can view and change anything you want.

Interested in knowing how much you’ve saved so far? Insurify shows you that. Want to go back to your discounts? Insurify lets you easily navigate there. Need to add a driver? Edit coverage? Start over? Insurify anticipates the actions you may want to take and makes it easy for you to correct mistakes or change your mind without having to start from scratch.

QuoteWizard does a pretty good job of asking short, to-the-point questions (it answers some easy “yes” and “no” questions for you ahead of time to save you clicks if you agree). But it doesn’t include any graphics to make it easier to answer visually aided questions quickly like Insurify does. Insurify’s compact, colorful user experience is just a part of why they are America’s top insurance comparison platform.

LendingTree vs. Gabi

Gabi has a tool similar to LendingTree’s QuoteWizard, which lets you compare auto insurance rates from top insurance companies. However, in addition to giving you auto insurance quotes, the site has tools that help you compare homeowners, renters, and umbrella insurance as well. Simply upload your existing insurance to get quotes in minutes.

Unlike LendingTree, Gabi is an insurance broker (meaning that Gabi acts as an intermediary between you and the insurance company). While this can be good because the circle of people who have your personal information is smaller, insurance brokers get paid on commission. This arrangement can leave shoppers wondering if they got the fairest deal.

Because you have to link your current insurance account to their system, Gabi can compare exact data from your policy to try to find you better coverage. If you don’t have insurance, Gabi will still give you quotes. But even Gabi admits that for its comparison engine to “work its magic,” you must give them an existing policy to work from.

While Insurify doesn’t ask you to connect a policy, the more information you give them, the more accurate the quotes will be. And you can see this on the accuracy meter they provide! As opposed to Gabi, whose quoting process ends by redirecting you to insurance websites, Insurify doesn’t send you anywhere without giving you quotes (up to 20 of them) right on their site.

LendingTree vs. The Zebra

The Zebra is an online tool for comparing auto insurance. Through this tool, it links shoppers to competitive policies from over 200 car insurance companies. Using The Zebra, you can find rates from both national and regional carriers.

The Zebra offers a more enjoyable, immersive user experience than LendingTree’s QuoteWizard. While QuoteWizard simply asks you questions, one after the other, The Zebra adds visuals and provides helpful information to aid in your understanding of the insurance quoting process. The Zebra knows that answering questions doesn’t have to be boring.

The Zebra doesn’t ask for your phone number. This means no unwanted phone calls or texts in exchange for quotes. However, The Zebra does immediately add all the cars registered to your residence when you key in your address, which can feel a little invasive. Unlike QuoteWizard, you can edit your information during The Zebra’s quoting process, but you have to leave the screen.

Once you’ve completed the question-and-answer series, The Zebra returns actual quotes on the screen. It also displays several “more great matches for you.” However, there’s no explanation as to what made these great matches.

Insurify and The Zebra provide an enriched user interface and actual quotes. But Insurify hands-down understands how people best interact with visual screen elements and provides the most visually pleasing and uninterrupted online experience. Though most people are happy with both providers, Insurify is the only one that is accredited with the Better Business Bureau.
