Esurance is a high-cost insurance provider for many different driver profiles. Launched in 1999, this tech-forward company prides itself in a great mobile app experience and numerous discounts for customers.

Who Benefits Most and Least from Esurance?

Best For…

  • Drivers wanting to participate in a telematics program
  • Those looking for good deals on gas
  • People who like to monitor their car’s repairs

Not the Best For…

  • Drivers looking for the cheapest rates possible
  • Those who aren’t tech-inclined

Esurance: Is it really surprisingly painless?

Esurance is an insurance company made for the millennial. It offers a variety of time- and money-saving apps that give you tips and discounts based on your driving, let you monitor car repairs, and even show you when and where to find the cheapest gas. Of course, this means Esurance isn’t the best option for those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy, and it doesn’t exactly dish out the cheapest rates.

Auto Insurance Quotes Comparison: Esurance vs. Progressive, GEICO, Liberty Mutual

Esurance Auto Insurance Coverages

Esurance provides standard coverage packages as well as add-ons. These packages vary depending on state laws, so you should check in with Esurance about standard coverage in your specific state.

Liability Insurance (Bodily injury and property damage)
Liability insurance covers you in situations where you or your vehicle caused property damage or bodily injury to another person, which is mandatory in most states. So if you were to hit another car, Esurance would help pay for the repairs to the other vehicle and foot the other driver’s medical bills. This type of coverage doesn’t cover any of your injuries or damages to your own car.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Say you’re in an accident where someone hits your car. Now imagine the other driver says they don’t have enough insurance to cover your car repairs, or even pay for your medical bills, and now you’re stuck with a hefty bill to pay. But, if you have underinsured motorist coverage, Esurance will pay for your medical bills and car repairs in such a situation. Underinsured motorist coverage also covers hit-and-run accidents

Collision Insurance
Esurance offers collision insurance for any instance where your car collides with another vehicle or object. This primarily covers damages to your car.

Comprehensive Insurance
Comprehensive insurance, also known as “other than collision,” covers damages to your vehicle caused by anything that wasn’t the result of a collision. These are usually Acts of God, such as hail, theft, vandalism, etc.

Personal Injury Protection
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) covers medical payments if you or your passengers suffer injuries in an accident, your transport to and from doctor’s appointments, and any income you lose due to an accident. PIP applies regardless of whether or not you were at fault in the accident. This coverage is required in several states and usually kicks in even before your health insurance.

Loan/lease gap coverage
If you’re still making payments on your car or lease it out every month, gap insurance coverage could be beneficial for you. If your car is totaled, and you owe more than what your car is worth, Esurance will help you pay the rest of your loan back, minus the deductible. So if Esurance values your totaled car at $12,000, but you still owe $15,000 on the car, loan/lease coverage will cover the $3,000 you need to pay the lender. Esurance pays up to 25 percent of your car’s actual cash value to help cover payments to your lender.

Emergency Roadside Assistance
Every driver’s nightmare is being stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and having no one to call for help. In these cases, it helps to know you can rely on your insurance company to come through and help you out. Esurance’s roadside assistance program covers everything from replacing flat tires and refilling gas to towing your car to the nearest repair station. Esurance’s roadside assistance program covers up to $75 per incident.

Rental car coverage
If your car is in the repair shop, Esurance will reimburse you for the cost of renting out a car in the interim. Rental car coverage is available only as an add-on for Esurance customers who have collision and comprehensive insurance. In some states, Esurance also offers CarMatch Rental Coverage, which covers the cost of renting a car that is similar in size and body type to the car you already have.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by Esurance

DriveSense is Esurance’s telematics app that tracks your driving habits to give you a personalized discount. It’s an opt-in program that requires you to download the DriveSense app, which then collects data and draws maps based on your car usage, and gives you tips and weekly recaps. You need to log at least 50 trips before Esurance sets your discount. While only Esurance policyholders can apply for DriveSense discounts, non-Esurance policyholders can also use the app for free if they’re just looking for feedback on their driving habits.

If you’re filing a claim with Esurance, you can send your car to any repair shop of your choosing. However, if you use an Esurance-approved shop, your repairs are guaranteed as long as you are the owner of the vehicle. Esurance-approved repair shops also come fully equipped with RepairView, which allows you to track the progress of your car’s repairs, and even receive daily pictures of the progress.

Esurance launched the first gas price prediction tool that shows how gas prices may rise or fall in the next 24 hours. All you have to do is enter your ZIP code, and the app will tell you whether to “buy” or “wait” depending on how gas prices might fluctuate in the next day or so. The app also shows you the nearest gas stations and their corresponding gas prices. The tool is free, and you can use it regardless of whether or not you hold Esurance’s auto insurance policy.

Other Insurance Products Offered by Esurance

Despite being a relatively young insurance company, Esurance offers a wide variety of insurance products. Remember: bundling insurance products can often get you a hefty discount!

Compare Homeowners Insurance

Renters Insurance

How Can I Buy Auto Insurance from Esurance?

As an insurance company that was founded at the onset of the 21st century, Esurance makes it very easy for prospective clients to buy insurance online or over the phone.

Esurance’s Coverage Counselor is a helpful tool that advises you on what kind of auto insurance policy would best fit you and your driving profile. The tool will ask a couple of questions and then display relevant quotes and coverage options suited to you. The questions are pretty standard for most online quoting systems.

You might benefit from using an online quote comparison website like Insurify instead, which lets you compare 10+ insurance companies instead of showing quotes from just one company.

How Can I Pay for My Esurance Car Insurance Policy?

Esurance strongly prefers automatic billing through credit and debit cards, and you cannot opt-out of automatic payments.

Esurance doesn’t currently have a system that allows for payment through your bank. You can change your payment date by logging into your Esurance account, although if you change it too many times, you may be required to call customer service to make further changes.

How Often Will Esurance Increase My Premiums?

Chances are Esurance will change your auto insurance premium depending on your driving record, accidents you may have been involved in, changes to your location, and discounts for which you’re eligible.

After an accident
Esurance will probably raise your insurance premium if you get into an accident and file a claim, even if you weren’t the at-fault party. The rate increase is heavily dependent on the claim you file. Think about it this way: the higher your claim is, the more Esurance has to pay to cover damages. So you automatically become a high-risk driver and warrant a higher insurance rate.
Esurance does not currently have an accident forgiveness program.

After a violation
If you were convicted of a moving violation like speeding or driving under the influence, you become a high-risk insurance driver, and it will cost more to insure you. Therefore, Esurance may increase your insurance rate.

If you’re no longer eligible for a discount
If you are no longer eligible for a discount that previously made your premium lower, Esurance may increase your rate. For example, if you got a discount because you switched Esurance’s auto insurance policy before your policy with another company was over, you won’t be eligible for the discount after your third or fourth policy term with Esurance. Similarly, if you previously got a “good student” discount but have now graduated, you’ll lose out on that discount.

If you move to another ZIP code
Factors like crime rate and incidence of natural disasters where you live impact your insurance. So if you happen to move from a suburban area with low crime to a city with high crime, the possibility of your car getting stolen is higher, so Esurance might increase your rates.

If your state’s rates increase
Sometimes Esurance may have to increase your rate, not because of your driving record, but because your state’s Department of Insurance and Esurance agreed on a new rate plan for all drivers in your state.

How Does Esurance’s Claims Process Work?

If you get into an accident and need to file a claim with Esurance, you can do so through its mobile app, by logging into your Esurance account online, or by calling 1 (800) 378-7262. The Esurance app allows you to upload pictures from the scene of the accident.

If your car needs repairs, the app will show you the nearest Esurance-approved repair shops. If you pick one of these shops, you can receive daily pictures of your car while it’s at the shop, contact the shop directly, and coordinate a pick up for your car using RepairView. You can access your RepairView account online by putting in your relevant information.

How Can I Cancel My Esurance Car Insurance Policy?

While Esurance allows customers to manage their policies almost exclusively online, if you want to cancel your auto policy, you have to call Esurance’s customer service representatives. You can call 1 (800) 378-7262 anytime between 6 AM and 12 AM (Central Time), seven days a week.

If you cancel at the end of your policy, i.e., you choose not to renew your policy, you won’t face any cancellation fees. However, if you decide to cancel before your policy, you might have to pay a flat fee or a percentage of your remaining premium.

Remember, auto insurance is legally required in all states if you’re driving a car. So make sure you have another insurance policy lined up to start before you cancel your Esurance policy. You can use an insurance quote comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare 10+ insurance company quotes at a time, to make sure you get the best insurance deals possible.

ShareSmart for Uber/Lyft drivers

Esurance offers ShareSmart auto insurance for rideshare drivers in California and Illinois. ShareSmart covers rideshare drivers in the period between them accepting a passenger and when they’re driving to meet the passenger. Usually, neither the driver’s personal insurance nor the rideshare company’s insurance cover this window of time.

With Esurance’s ShareSmart, if you happen to get into an accident while you’re driving a passenger, you pay the lowest deductible between your personal policy and the rideshare company’s policy. Esurance pays the difference in deductibles for you.

To understand the costs and specifics of how ShareSmart applies to you, you can call Esurance’s agents. Uber drivers can call 1 (855) 525-2078, while Lyft and other rideshare drivers can call 1 (800) ESURANCE.

Esurance Auto Insurance Overview

Esurance was founded in San Francisco in 1999, making it one of the younger companies in the insurance industry.

This worked as an advantage for the young company, as Esurance was better equipped to adapt to the changing insurance landscape. In fact, it was one of the first companies to sell insurance to consumers directly online, without having to rely on in-person meetings with insurance agents.

Esurance’s legacy of technological innovation has propelled it to popularity amongst millennials, who no doubt can take advantage of the numerous online tools and mobile apps Esurance offers.
