AAA is best known for roadside assistance service and other auto club perks, but it’s also a major insurance provider. The company provides auto insurance, life insurance, and homeowners insurance in various parts of the United States—availability depends on which region you’re in.

Who Benefits Most and Least from AAA Insurance?

Best For…

  • People who are already AAA club members
  • Customers who live in a region with good AAA insurance offerings
  • Drivers who travel a lot

Not the Best For…

  • Customers who want the lowest possible rates
  • Drivers looking for consistency in their insurance products and quality of customer service, no matter where they live

AAA Car Insurance: Insurance from an auto club?

AAA is, first and foremost, an auto club, and its structure reflects that. Unlike most insurers, which have a central headquarters and field offices that report to it, AAA is split into independent companies covering different regions.

As a result, your experience with AAA can vary wildly, depending on where you live. Some regions don’t offer insurance at all; most now offer auto insurance policies, and a few sell homeowners insurance and/or life insurance as well (though most of these require you to buy auto insurance before you can sign up for other types of insurance). Some AAA clubs sell insurance directly, while others just act as a broker (their policies are covered by another insurance provider). Coverage options, discounts, and quality of customer service can be quite different from one region to another. Finally, you’ll need to become an auto club member to buy insurance from the company. AAA membership includes roadside assistance and discounts at locations ranging from hotels to movie theaters.

AAA Car Insurance Quotes and Discounts

You might think shopping for insurance means buying the cheapest option you can find, but if you’re not checking for discounts, you might not be saving as much as you think. Pick a policy with lots of available discounts, and a seemingly costly premium could end up being the best deal of the bunch.

Make sure you use Insurify when shopping for your car insurance policy—it makes sure you’re aware of any discounts for which you’re eligible and lets you compare quotes between several insurance companies!

Auto Insurance Quotes Comparison: AAA vs. Progressive, State Farm, GEICO, and Liberty Mutual

Insurify’s data team compared AAA car insurance quotes to those of Progressive, State Farm, GEICO, and Liberty Mutual. Below are the quotes for a 42-year-old female driver from Houston, Texas who drives a 2010 Honda Civic and has a clean driving record:

Insurance companyQuote
AAA$54/month
State Farm$56/month
Progressive$57/month
GEICO$50/month
Liberty Mutual$100/month

These would be her rates if she were to get a speeding ticket for going at 75 mph in a 50 mph zone:

Insurance companyQuote
AAA$68/month
State Farm$56/month
Progressive$68/month
GEICO$76/month
Liberty Mutual$211/month

And these would be her rates if she were to get into an at-fault accident:

Insurance companyQuote
AAA$79/month
State Farm$61/month
Progressive$88/month
GEICO$89/month
Liberty Mutual$190/month

Lastly, these would be her rates if she decided to add her 16-year-old child to her auto insurance policy

As you’ve probably guessed, you never know which insurance company could give you the best deal for the best price. For this particular driver, AAA offers the best deals for a clean record and very competitive rates for a driver with a speeding ticket or an at-fault accident. But then again, it might not offer you the same deal.

This is why you should always compare quotes online by using comparison websites like Insurify.

States Where AAA Car Insurance is Offered

AAA auto clubs are available in all 50 states, but not all of them sell insurance.

AAA has 57 different regional auto clubs covering the entire U.S. However, not every regional club sells car insurance.

Insurance minimums and coverage vary in every state, so you should look up the specific AAA policies offered in yours:

AAA Auto Insurance Coverages

AAA offers policyholders the following types of insurance as part of their “standard” car insurance coverage.

Liability coverage
AAA offers customers both property damage liability and bodily injury liability, which are mandatory in most states. These cover you if you’re at fault in a car accident and need to pay for medical bills and property damage sustained by the other driver. So if you were to be at fault in a car accident with another car, AAA would pay for the damages to that other vehicle. If you were to crash into someone’s fence or mailbox, AAA would pay for that, too.

Comprehensive and collision coverage
These types of car insurance coverage pay for damage to your vehicle, whether the damage is your fault or someone else’s. Collision coverage pays for damage that occurs when your vehicle hits something else (be it another car or something like a tree). Comprehensive coverage is for any type of covered damage that’s not the result of a collision: for example, if your vehicle is stolen or vandalized.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
What happens if you’re in an accident that’s someone else’s fault, but that person doesn’t have enough insurance coverage to pay for your vehicle repairs or medical expenses? In that case, AAA’s uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can help. If you’re hit by someone who has no insurance coverage or you’re the victim of a hit-and-run, uninsured motorist coverage will apply. Underinsured motorist coverage, not surprisingly, is for accidents where the at-fault driver has some insurance coverage, but not enough to pay for all the expenses.

Medical payments coverage
If you’re involved in an accident, AAA’s medical payments coverage will help pay your medical expenses, legal fees, and any emotional distress the accident caused you. Medical payments coverage is not intended as a replacement for health insurance, but it can complement your existing health insurance coverage. If you missed a few days of work because you were recovering from the accident, AAA would compensate you for those lost wages. It will also cover bereavement costs—costs associated with losing a loved one if the accident was fatal.

Personal Injury Protection coverage
AAA offers Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage as your state requires. If you’re a resident of a no-fault accident state, you’re required to have either medical payments coverage or PIP coverage. PIP covers your medical payments in the long-term aftermath of your accident, not just the immediate aftermath. This means if you or your family members sustained injuries that require regular hospital visits and rehabilitation, PIP would cover those costs. PIP tends to cover more expenses than medical payments coverage does, but unlike medical payments coverage, you’ll have a deductible to meet. Check to make sure you’re comfortable with the level of PIP coverage before purchasing your insurance policy.

Roadside Assistance
Because you have to be a AAA member to buy insurance, you’ll get roadside assistance as part of the package. AAA offers three different membership levels: Basic, Plus, and Premier. All three packages include 24/7 towing, locksmith services, tire changes, jumpstarts and other battery services, and fuel delivery. Annual dues for Basic membership range from $48 to $96 for primary members and $21 to $51 for associate members, depending on your region.

The following are optional coverages that may be available as add-ons to a standard AAA car insurance policy, depending on the region:

Rental car reimbursement
AAA will reimburse you for the cost of renting a car if you’re in an accident and your vehicle is undergoing repairs. But of course, it will only cover the costs if your policy covered the original accident.

Pet coverage
If your pet is injured during an accident, this coverage will help with vet bills related to those injuries.

Gap coverage
When you buy a new vehicle, its value drops as soon as you drive it off the dealership lot. That means you could end up owing more on your car loan than the car is actually worth…and if you total the car in an accident under those circumstances, you may end up owing the lender more than you get back from your auto insurance company. That’s where gap coverage can come in handy. If your vehicle is totaled, gap coverage pays you the difference between how much your car is worth and how much you owe on the lease or loan.

Other Special Auto Coverages Offered by AAA Insurance

Accident forgiveness
AAA lets you purchase accident forgiveness as an add-on to your insurance coverage. If you buy this coverage, your premium price won’t increase after your first at-fault accident, as it typically does if you get into an accident. Accident forgiveness can apply for any driver on your policy, but can only be used once per policy.

Vanishing deductible
If you purchase AAA’s optional Vanishing Deductible coverage, you’ll get a special reward for being a good driver. For every policy period that you go without an accident, your deductible is lowered by $50, up to a maximum total discount of $500.

OnBoard
AAA’s OnBoard program uses an app on your smartphone to track certain driving behaviors. These include how quickly you accelerate, how hard you brake, and how many miles you drive on average. Safe drivers, as determined by the device, will then be eligible for cheaper auto insurance policies. You’ll get a discount on your insurance rates just for signing up for the OnBoard program; the discount could rise as high as 30 percent depending on how safely you drive according to the app.

Other Insurance Products Offered by AAA Insurance

Home Insurance
Dwelling protection, personal possession protection, liability coverage, and loss of use coverage are standard inclusions for homeowners insurance policies provided by AAA. You may also be able to tack on earthquake insurance, flood insurance, and other special coverages.

Renters Insurance
If you rent rather than own your home, AAA can provide renters insurance that includes personal property coverage, liability coverage, loss of use coverage, and medical payments coverage. Some regions also let you add earthquake coverage and flood coverage.

Life Insurance
A few clubs, such as CalState AAA, also sell life insurance policies. Individual AAA clubs may offer term life insurance, whole life insurance, and universal life insurance.

How Can I Buy Auto Insurance from AAA?

You can purchase AAA’s car insurance from your regional club’s website, assuming that your region offers such coverage; there’s a complete list of AAA clubs here

Alternatively, you can search for your nearest club office and call or visit them. Remember to compare quotes before you make a solid decision by using a website like Insurify, which lets you compare up to 20 quotes at a time!

How Can I Pay for My AAA Car Insurance Policy?

AAA accepts almost all methods of payment, including paying online, by phone, or through the mail, though certain regions may not offer every option. If you pay your premium in full, you can avoid installment fees.

Credit card or bank account
You can log in to your AAA account and pay with your credit card or your checking or savings account. You’ll need to visit your regional club’s website to access your insurance account.

Through your bank
You can sign up for online payments through your bank by using your AAA policy number. You can subsequently pay through your online banking system.

Automatic payment
You can set up automatic monthly payments from your bank account or debit or credit card.

By phone
Visit your regional club’s website to find their customer service number and pay for your policy over the phone.

By mail
If you’d rather send a check, look up the appropriate mailing address on your regional club’s website. Some clubs may not accept payment by mail, but you may be able to pay in person by visiting the nearest AAA office.

How Often Will AAA Increase My Premiums?

If you get into an accident…
Even safe drivers can get into unfortunate situations, and most of the time, getting a ticket or a violation on your record can lead to premium increases. At AAA, you can apply for accident forgiveness coverage, and then your premium won’t increase if you have an accident. However, if you get into an accident and don’t have accident forgiveness, your premium will most probably increase—even if you weren’t at fault.

If you’re a loyal customer…
Many AAA policyholders complained of price hikes even though they had maintained clean driving records. If you’re notified of a steep rate increase at renewal time, make sure you get quotes from other insurers before renewing. You may find a much better deal elsewhere, even if AAA was originally the best option.

If you file a claim…
The number of claims you file will also impact your AAA premiums. If you file a claim, even for an accident where you weren’t at fault, your AAA rate will probably increase.

How Does AAA’s Claims Process Work?

You may be able to file a claim online by logging into your AAA account on your regional club’s website. Alternately, look for the Member Service Center phone number on the local AAA club’s website to file your claim over the phone.

How Can I Cancel My AAA Car Insurance Policy?

You can call a representative at your regional AAA club to cancel your policy.

Cancellation fees vary by state and policy, but you should consider canceling your policy at the end of the policy period to avoid fees. Make sure you already have another insurance policy lined up for your car, so there are no gaps in your insurance. You should hold off on canceling your plan until you have your proof of insurance letter. Use an insurance comparison website like Insurify to find and compare auto insurance quotes for free.

How Much Does Uber/Lyft Coverage Cost with AAA?

If you have a AAA auto insurance policy, you may be able to tack on a ridesharing endorsement to protect you during the time between when your personal coverage ends and your Uber or Lyft policy takes over. You’ll still need to buy coverage from Uber or Lyft to protect you while you actually have a paying passenger in the car; AAA’s rideshare endorsement is only active between when you log into the Uber/Lyft app and when you get matched with a passenger.

Because the endorsement only operates for a brief window, it’s typically quite cheap—though specific costs will vary based on your driving history, location, credit score, and other factors. Not all regional clubs offer ridesharing insurance, so check with your local club to confirm availability.

AAA’s app has received average reviews, with a rating of 3.2 on Apple’s App Store and 3.4 on Google Play. Bad reviews generally cite technical problems with the app.

Does AAA have good insurance?

AAA is a good option for car insurance if you're already a member of the club, if your local AAA office provides suitable insurance offerings and good customer service, or if you do a lot of traveling by car (for example, drivers who often visit Mexico can pick up AAA Mexican auto insurance). It might not be a good option if you're looking for an insurance company with excellent customer service or the smoothest claims process. Also, drivers who plan to move to a new area might not want to choose AAA, since the regional club in your new location might not support your insurance needs.

Does AAA have cheaper rates than Progressive, GEICO, or State Farm?

This all depends on your specific your specific situation and driving history. According to our data for a 42-year-old female driver from Texas, AAA offers competitive rates that are on par with Progressive and GEICO. But then again, you don't really know till you key in your information on a website. It's easier if you use a quotes comparison website like Insurify, which lets you compare up to 20 different insurance company quotes all at once.

AAA Auto Insurance Overview

AAA (the American Automobile Association) was founded in 1902 as one of the first motor clubs.

A few years later, AAA started providing travel information for its members. Since motor vehicles were rare in those days, most road maps were designed for bicyclists, so AAA began publishing its own auto-oriented road maps. The organization moved into offering insurance in 1912 when the Southern California branch started underwriting auto insurance policies. In 1915, AAA became the first motor club to provide roadside assistance. AAA is now headquartered in the state of Florida.

AAA holds a J.D. Power and Associates overall customer satisfaction rating of 2 out of 5. Among the nation’s top insurance providers, this is a low score.

A.M. Best, a credit rating company that assesses the financial strength of insurance companies, gives AAA an “A,” denoting excellent financial health and ability to pay out claims.
