The average cost of car insurance in New York is $171 per month, which exceeds the national monthly average of $137. Your location affects how much you pay for coverage. Drivers in densely populated areas, like Manhattan and Brooklyn, pay expensive premiums due to increased risks of car accidents and vehicle theft.

Additionally, New York faces severe winter storms, which may explain why drivers pay such high rates throughout the state. Comparing car insurance quotes from multiple companies can help you find affordable coverage.

Here’s what you need to know about finding cheap car insurance in New York.

Quick Facts
  • Liberty Mutual, Erie, and USAA offer the cheapest average car insurance quotes in New York.

  • New York drivers pay $161 per month for liability coverage and $181 for full-coverage insurance, on average.

  • Because New York is a no-fault state, drivers involved in a car accident will need to file a claim with their respective insurers to cover medical expenses for an accident-related injury.[1]

Insurance Company Bias
Reviewed in Florida on January 2026
I strongly resent insurance companies penalizing drivers who honestly and willingly admit to having a no-fault accident (no violations and no tickets) by raising their rates, whether on purchase or renewal. It is unethical, and the government agency regulating insurance companies should prevent this action. Insurance companies penalize drivers based on age rather than the person's actual abilities. They assume that all young adults or all senior adults drive poorly and, therefore, unjustly charge higher rates. It is unethical, and the government agency regulating insurance companies should prevent this action. Progressive offers Snapshot, providing the driver a nice discount if this program is used. The problem? Snapshot—and I will presume all similar programs with other companies—is calibrated to high sensitivity levels, which incorrectly record the driver's actions. These calibrated high sensitivity levels are unrealistic in the driving world! My friends tell me regularly that I am a good driver, but Snapshot would paint a polar opposite picture. Snapshot is a program that is designed more to control the driver's actions than it is to help improve the driver's abilities or reduce rates.

How to get the cheapest car insurance in New York

The following tips can help you get low-cost car insurance in New York:

  • Buy a cheaper car. Opt for a budget-friendly vehicle to avoid overspending on both the car itself and its insurance. Non-luxury cars typically have lower service and repair costs, which leads to cheaper insurance claims and more affordable policy rates.

  • Ask for discounts. Don’t forget to ask about potential discounts when talking to insurance agents. Many companies offer discounts for completing defensive driving courses, opting for paperless communication, bundling insurance products, insuring a vehicle with an anti-theft device, maintaining good academic records, or having multiple drivers in your family.

  • Compare a few quotes. Taking the time to research and compare quotes from different auto insurance companies can help you find the cheapest options. This can help you identify the policy that aligns with your financial plan and coverage requirements, ensuring you get the best value for your money.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with an incident

New York drivers with an incident on their record typically pay higher premiums than drivers with a clean record. For insurance purposes, incidents include at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, driving under the influence, and other serious moving violations.

Insurance companies generally consider drivers with incidents on their record as riskier to insure, so these drivers often pay higher rates than people with a clean driving history.

Cheapest car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket: Liberty Mutual

Speeding tickets often increase insurance rates. When you’re pulled over for speeding, it indicates that you’re driving unsafely and may be at an increased risk of causing an accident. But how much your insurance goes up after a speeding ticket depends on factors like how fast you were going over the posted speed limit and whether the violation occurred in a school zone.

Some car insurance companies raise premiums more than others for people with a speeding ticket. The average cost of car insurance for drivers with a speeding ticket in New York is $242 per month for full coverage and $215 per month for liability-only coverage.

The table below shows the cheapest car insurance for New York drivers with a speeding ticket.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 500+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
