Metromile is an auto insurance company that offers pay-per-mile policies, making it an attractive option for low-mileage drivers. Metromile charges a rate according to the number of miles you drive, so your actual driving habits determine your cost.

Metromile customers get access to a few policy discounts and the Metromile app to easily track trips and monitor vehicle health. But policies are only available in eight U.S. states: Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

Quick Facts
  • Metromile has mixed customer reviews.

  • Metromile customers are transitioning to Lemonade, following the 2022 acquisition by the larger insurer.

  • Metromile’s plug-in device doesn’t need Bluetooth or a mobile phone to send data.

How Metromile compares to other insurance companies

If you’re a low-mileage driver, Metromile’s pay-per-mile insurance model could save you money over competitor prices.[1] But before signing up, consider the company’s limited discount options and availability in only eight states.

It’s also important to note that Metromile Insurance Company has more complaints than its rivals, which might be a red flag for some people.

How Metromile auto insurance works

Metromile matches insurance premiums to driving habits. It charges a monthly base rate, plus a per-mile rate — also known as usage-based insurance. Like other insurance companies, Metromile also factors in your gender and age, credit history, vehicle choice, driving record, and prior insurance history to calculate how much you pay.[2]

When you sign up, Metromile sends you a device that plugs into your car’s diagnostic port to track your miles. The plug-in device sends trip information to the company using a built-in cell modem, so it doesn’t need to connect to your Bluetooth or smartphone. Every month, Metromile sends you a bill that includes the next month’s Metromile base rate along with mile rate charges from the previous month.

How Metromile rates compare to competitors

Metromile has middle-of-the-road premiums compared to several of its competitors. See how Metromile’s average full-coverage rates compare to several similar insurers below.

Average cost of Metromile auto insurance

Many factors influence your car insurance rates, including your age, gender, ZIP code, type of car you drive, and more.

If you have any incidents on your driving record — like an at-fault accident, speeding ticket, or DUI — you’ll pay more for coverage than someone with a clean driving record. Teens and young drivers also pay higher rates because they have less experience and are more likely to get into an accident.

In the table below, you can see how Metromile’s monthly liability rates compare to the national averages for drivers with different incidents on their records.

Driver
Metromile Average Quote
National Average
Drivers with a clean record$63$104
Drivers with a speeding ticket$85$145
Drivers with an at-fault accident$89$151
Drivers with a DUI$104$171
Teen drivers$100$193
Senior drivers$50$80

Metromile car insurance cost by state

Car insurance rules and costs vary widely across different states. Each state sets its coverage requirements and regulations that influence your price. Local risks, like weather or traffic conditions, also affect insurance rates.

Metromile currently does business in eight states. In Arizona, the average Metromile liability-only rate is $76 per month, lower than the state average of $92.

Metromile car insurance discounts

Auto insurance discounts often play a big role in picking an insurance company. They can get you lower rates, making finding coverage that fits your budget easier.[3] Here are some Metromile discounts that can help you save on car insurance:

  • Multi-car discount: Cover two or more vehicles under one policy for a lower rate.

  • Anti-theft device: Install an anti-theft device to quality for savings.

  • Safe driver discount: Maintain a clean driving record to reduce your premiums.

  • Bundling discount: Combine your auto policy with your home insurance for additional savings.

How customers feel about Metromile

Customers have mixed feelings about Metromile. On Trustpilot, the company has a rating of 2 out of 5 stars. Negative reviews mention concerns about the mileage-tracking device, citing issues like trouble connecting the device and over-reporting miles driven. The Clearsurance rating is higher: 4.12 stars out of 5. But the Better Business Bureau (BBB) shows a rating of 2.06 out of 5.

Metromile’s innovative approach to car insurance may attract customers, but the inconsistent reviews suggest the company still has work to do in terms of reliability and customer service.

Stay Away

I used their services for 6 months, and then they raised my policy by 300% for no apparent reason. I believe they operate on a bait and switch type of scam, offering a great price in the beginning and then, bam!

Overpriced Auto Insurance

Keep an eye on their rates, as they have a tendency to creep up, just like most other auto insurers.

Metromile ratings

Industry ratings offer valuable information about an insurance company’s financial stability, customer satisfaction, and complaints.

These ratings can help you make a good choice when shopping for auto insurance. But Metromile doesn’t have an AM Best financial strength rating, and J.D. Power didn’t include the company in its 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study.

What This Means

Metromile car insurance coverage options

Metromile offers state-minimum required car insurance, including liability coverage to protect you if you’re at fault in an accident. Liability insurance pays for damages to other peoples’ property and their medical expenses.

Additionally, Metromile provides medical coverage for your injuries, such as personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments (MedPay) coverage, depending on your state. If your car breaks down, roadside assistance services are also available for lockouts, flat tires, or towing.

You can add full coverage to protect your vehicle with comprehensive and collision insurance. Comprehensive insurance safeguards your car against damage from theft, vandalism, or natural disasters. Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident. Full coverage also has perks like rental car reimbursement and pet injury protection for your dog or cat.

Overall, Metromile’s basic coverage options align with policies from major car insurance companies like State Farm or Progressive. But one thing you can’t get at Metromile is coverage when using the vehicle for work, like food-delivery service or rideshares. If you drive for DoorDash, Uber, or another delivery or rideshare company, you’ll have to look elsewhere for a policy.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
