Companies with car insurance discounts for teachers

While the above insurers offer affordable liability-only coverage, some companies also provide teacher-specific discounts. Keep in mind that the best company for you will offer the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

Even if a company has a professional discount, you might be able to find cheaper coverage elsewhere. That’s why it’s essential to get quotes from different car insurance companies to find a budget-friendly auto insurance policy.

To help you compare your options, here are some of the top auto insurance companies offering educator discounts.

COUNTRY Financial

Discount: Up to 10%

COUNTRY Financial is clear about how much you can save if you’re a teacher. Full-time K12 educators can earn up to 10% off their car insurance premiums.

This discount can help you keep more money in your pocket, though availability may vary by state. Teachers in Alaska, Georgia, and Tennessee aren’t eligible for a discount from COUNTRY Financial.[1]

GEICO

Discount: Not disclosed

GEICO offers discounts to professionals affiliated with certain groups, some of which are for educators at the K12 and university levels. For example, GEICO offers a special discount for Howard University alumni association members, faculty, and staff.

If you know you belong to a school-related organization or professional education group, you can search for it on GEICO’s Membership Discounts page.[2]

Horace Mann

Discount: Not disclosed

Horace Mann, a financial services company dedicated to helping educators, offers a professional discount for teachers and administrators who want to reduce their auto insurance costs. The insurer doesn’t provide information about discount specifics or amounts.

Still, it could be worth considering a Horace Mann auto policy if you’re a teacher in one of the 45 states where this insurer does business. Educators in Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York will need to look elsewhere.

Liberty Mutual

Discount: $0 deductible for certain covered incidents

Liberty Mutual doesn’t offer a percentage-based discount on car insurance for teachers. Instead, it has exclusive teacher auto insurance coverage with built-in savings and perks.[3] This coverage can include vandalism loss protection with a $0 deductible that covers your vehicle while on school property.

The company also offers collision coverage with a $0 deductible for collision damage while driving on school business. You can also get up to $2,500 in personal property coverage per occurrence for damaged or stolen teaching materials or school-owned property you stored in your car.

Liberty Mutual offers auto insurance in all 50 states, but its website indicates that teacher auto insurance isn’t available in all areas.

Meemic

Discount: Up to 50%

Meemic Insurance Company — an AAA-affiliated company — exclusively provides home and auto coverage for educators and other school employees in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia.

The company has a newly certified teacher discount for the first seven years following your initial certification. And the company says retired teachers can earn up to 50% off on vehicle coverage. Specifics may vary by state.

Tips for teachers to get cheaper car insurance rates

Even if you don’t qualify for a dedicated teacher discount or deductible waiver, you can find cheap car insurance rates. Here are some helpful strategies for getting the best rates:

  • Compare rates. The best way to find cheap coverage is to compare rates from different companies. This process could save you hundreds in car insurance costs annually. Many insurance companies offer online quotes, making it easy to get insight into your rates. Or, you can use an insurance-comparison site to compare multiple quotes at once.

  • Look for other auto insurance discounts. Many auto insurers offer several discounts. You can get discounts for bundling multiple insurance products, maintaining a good driving record, insuring multiple cars, owning a home, and more. Explore other discounts for additional savings.

  • Focus on maintaining a clean record. Your driving record can affect your insurance rates significantly. People with a clean record typically get lower rates, while drivers with a history of at-fault accidents, speeding tickets, or other incidents have higher insurance rates. Abide by the rules of the road and be alert when you’re behind the wheel to keep your insurance prices low.

  • Increase your deductible. Opting for a higher car insurance deductible could result in lower monthly premiums. If you’re comfortable with paying more in the event of a covered claim, ask your insurance company if you can increase your deductible.[4]

Car insurance for teachers FAQs

If you’re an educator who wants more affordable auto insurance, the following information can help answer your remaining questions about coverage and discount options.

  • Do teachers get cheaper insurance?

It’s possible you could get cheaper car insurance if you’re a teacher. Many auto insurers offer special benefits and discounts for educators, though your insurance rates will depend on several factors unrelated to your profession.

Insurers will consider your location, driving history, car make and model, gender, and age when determining the cost of your coverage.

  • Does GEICO have a teacher discount?

Not specifically. GEICO doesn’t offer a general teacher discount, but it may offer one if you belong to a certain educational organization. For instance, members of the California Association for the Education of Young Children and Howard University alumni association members, faculty, and staff are eligible for a discount.

  • Does Progressive have a teacher discount?

No. Progressive doesn’t offer a teacher discount for car insurance. The company does offer several other discounts, including multi-policy, good driver, homeowner, and multi-car discounts.

  • What is the cheapest car insurance for teachers?

State Farm, GEICO, and Allstate all offer affordable car insurance coverage for teachers. But your insurance costs will vary depending on several things, including your driving history, age, location, the type of car you drive, and your gender.

Seeking out insurers that offer special discounts for teachers or other easy-to-get discounts can help you get cheaper coverage.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
