This company knows that comparison shopping for auto insurance quotes is the way of the future.

But can it walk the walk, too?

NerdWallet is a personal finance website that includes reviews of financial products and informational articles about credit scores, credit cards, loans, banking, and stocks. Designed for a millennial audience, it strives to advise users on how to make sound and well-informed financial decisions.

NerdWallet is also home to a car insurance comparison tool that lets users compare insurance policies between companies.

You also may have caught some of their TV spots. This 2019 ad takes an equally lighthearted and profound approach to the NerdWallet product:

As you can tell, NerdWallet often advertises that inquiring customers should “Turn to the Nerds” when it comes to financial advice.

But can those nerds help you with car insurance quotes comparison? Let’s investigate.

How does NerdWallet work?

NerdWallet’s insurance page purports to allow users to compare auto policy quotes from car insurance companies “in your area.” This functionality is mostly in the form of a monetized widget that lets you generate “instant matches” on car insurance from companies like ProgressiveMetromile, and Root.

Though the site offers detailed advice on how to compare car insurance quotes manually and offers insight into how premiums vary from state to state, it doesn’t include a proprietary real-time or estimated quoting feature.

The value of comparison shopping for real, bindable quotes is that ideally, you can find the best rates from a variety of insurance providers. So how did NerdWallet fare?

NerdWallet in action

Here’s what I did to see just how NerdWallet quotes comparison worked.

The “instant match” ad element asked for personal information like my ZIP code, age range, current insurer, marital status, homeownership status, and whether I served in the military. Simple enough.

Notably, I didn’t have to enter information that would be relevant to my risk profile, such as my driving record, gender, or credit health.

My offers ostensibly “updated” upon my form submission, and the number of companies listed decreased, presumably according to the information I had entered.

I was left with a variety of company listings, including ProgressiveElephant, and Esurance, as well as…The Zebra? (The fact that NerdWallet was linking to another auto insurance quotes comparison site wasn’t too encouraging!)

As I should have guessed, my quotes were hidden, and I had to click “See Rates” to uncover each company’s quote. Each of these took me to the other insurer, agency, or comparison site’s flow, where none of my information was pre-populated. Back to square one…I might as well have skipped this particular step altogether!

The kicker? The whole comparison widget was powered by…a totally different site!

NerdWallet Reviews: Here’s what customers are saying…

Are users getting a good deal on the NerdWallet quotes comparison experience, or even finding appropriate car insurance rates at all?

Reviews are mixed. In response to a query about where to find an auto insurance comparison platform that wouldn’t sell information to agencies, this Reddit user spoke middlingly about the NerdWallet experience:
CardWhile there’s an acknowledgment here of the overall redundancy of the process, at least the quotes generated by the site were more or less accurate in this specific instance.
