At Insurify, our goal is to help customers compare insurance products and find the best policy for them. We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.

We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

Why you can trust Insurify: Comparing accurate insurance quotes should never put you at risk of spam. We earn an agent commission only if you buy a policy based on our quotes. Our editorial team follows a rigorous set of editorial standards and operates independently from our insurance partners. Learn more.

Whether you find an insurer that offers you lower rates or you aren’t happy with Safeco’s customer service, you can cancel your Safeco car insurance policy at any time.[1] But you can’t cancel your policy online — you’ll need to call a customer service representative or your local agent to start the process.

Before making a cancellation request with Safeco, it’s important to compare quotes and secure a new insurance policy to avoid a lapse in coverage.

Safeco cancellation policy

Safeco’s website lacks information on its cancellation policy. The good news is the company doesn’t charge a fee for early cancellation.

The best way to cancel your Safeco policy is by calling customer support at 1 (800) 332-3226. You can also call or visit your local Safeco agent for more specific information.

Step 1: Look up your renewal date

Canceling your car insurance policy too early may result in a lapse of coverage. If you cause an accident while driving uninsured, you could be responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and injuries.

Check your Safeco policy’s renewal date to ensure you have new coverage lined up before your current policy ends. Here are a few places to find your policy’s renewal date:

  • Policy declaration page

  • Safeco online portal or mobile app

  • Insurance card

  • Billing statement

  • Safeco representative

Step 2: Compare car insurance quotes

Before purchasing a policy, it’s a good idea to compare quotes from multiple auto insurers. This ensures you’re getting the best rates for the coverages you need. Shopping around is particularly beneficial if your current rates are high and you’re seeking more affordable options.

Several factors influence your car insurance costs, including location, age, gender, driving history, and more. Coverage types, coverage limits, and deductibles also affect your premiums.

The Insurance Information Institute recommends gathering quotes from at least three different insurers.[2] Alternatively, you can use a quote-comparison tool to help you compare multiple quotes at once.

Step 3: Secure a new car insurance policy

After picking an insurance company with the best deal, you’re ready to purchase a new policy. Depending on your insurer, you can buy your policy online, by contacting an insurance agent, or by visiting one of its branches. Be prepared to provide the following details:

  • Personal information

  • Driving record

  • Desired effective date

  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)

  • Payment info, such as your credit or debit card number

In addition, car insurance companies may check your credit history to determine your insurance premium.

Important Information

To avoid a gap in your coverage, be sure that your desired effective date falls on the same day or before your current coverage ends.

Step 4: Cancel your Safeco policy

Now that you’ve secured a new policy, you can cancel your Safeco policy. You’ll have to speak to a Safeco representative or your agent to initiate a cancellation.

Alternatively, you can visit your local Safeco branch if you prefer to cancel your policy in person.

Step 5: Follow up on your refund

When canceling your policy with a Safeco representative, you might want to inquire about a refund. If you paid your premiums in full, you’ll get your money back for the unused portion of your policy.

If you’re paying on a month-to-month basis and decide to cancel midway through the month, you might be eligible for a refund amount calculated based on the portion of the month you haven’t used.

How Safeco quotes stack up vs. competitors

Safeco offers unique coverages to customize your policy. And its average liability-only rate of $68 per month is slightly lower than the national liability average of $104 per month, according to Insurify data.

Take a look at the table below to see how Safeco’s insurance rates compare to some of its competitors.

The below rates are estimated rates current as of: Wednesday, April 17 at 12:00 PM PDT

Canceling Safeco insurance FAQs

If you still have questions about canceling your car insurance coverage with Safeco, this additional information may help.

  • Does Safeco charge a cancellation fee?

Safeco doesn’t charge a cancellation fee. You can cancel your policy anytime by speaking to a customer service representative or your local insurance agent.

  • Can you cancel your Safeco policy at any time?

Yes. You can cancel at any time by calling Safeco’s customer service team at 1 (800) 332-3226 or your insurance agent. Be ready to provide the necessary information, such as your policy number, reason for cancellation, and desired end date. It’s also crucial to secure a new policy that starts the same day as your Safeco policy’s expiration date (or sooner) to avoid a lapse in coverage.

  • How can you confirm your Safeco insurance policy is canceled?

The best way to check the status of your policy cancellation is to contact a Safeco representative. When contacting your insurance representative, you may also want to ask about the status of your refund.

  • Does Safeco have a grace period for non-payment?

If you’ve missed a car insurance payment, your insurer is legally required to send you notice before canceling your policy. Laws vary by state, but you’ll typically have a grace period of 10 to 20 days after non-payment. If you miss a payment, contact Safeco to find out how long your grace period lasts. Then, pay your bill before this period ends to avoid a policy cancellation and a coverage lapse.

  • How do you cancel car insurance online?

Cancellation policies vary depending on the insurer. Most companies require you to speak to an agent to cancel your insurance coverage. Speak to your insurance agent or your insurer’s customer support team to inquire about its cancellation process, any fees, and whether a written cancellation is necessary.

Methodology

Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.

Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).

Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
  • No additional coverage
Full-coverage premium averages correspond to the same bodily injury and property damage limits in addition to:
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible

Quotes for Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, State Farm, and USAA are estimates based on Quadrant Information Services’ database of auto insurance rates.
